Chapter 4: On the edge of reason, pursuing the truth is my duty, but getting close to her is...

Outside the interrogation room, Gu Yifeng stood in the shadows with his arms folded. His eyes were calm, but there was a hint of obscure emotion hidden in them.

Gao Yiyuan checked the identity query results on the tablet in his hand for the third time, his finger almost poking a hole in the screen: there was no matching data in the national population information database, entry and exit records, and various registration systems. Even some databases of the National Security Bureau showed - no such person.

"That's unscientific!" Gao Yiyuan said with resentment in his tone: "Boss, I need to update the database. Give me some more time, and I will definitely find her information."

Gu Yifeng didn't say anything, just nodded slightly.

"The suspect claimed she was kidnapped while traveling in Yunhu City, and her belongings were taken by the killer," Ye Min added, observing him calmly. "Once the forensic department sorts through her belongings, perhaps we'll find more clues."

Gu Yifeng nodded slightly, tapping his arm with his fingertips, as if thinking about something.

Ye Min paused, wanting to say something but stopping herself.

Gu Yifeng also noticed that he was particularly hesitant. He stood outside the interrogation room for a long time. He should have started the interrogation himself, but he didn't act. He knew that once the interrogation began, there would be no turning back.

He had to know the truth. But he was also hesitant...the truth would be related to her.

After a long pause, Ye Min tentatively asked, "Teacher Gu... do you want me to begin the interrogation?"

"...Okay." After a few seconds of silence, he finally spoke, "Just do some basic inquiries first. Don't provoke her, and don't reveal too many details."

"Huh?" Ye Min was stunned and looked at him in disbelief: "You mean, let me test the suspect first?"

"Right. What we want is a breakthrough, not a confrontation." He paused, then added, "...She's not an ordinary suspect."

If only she were just an ordinary person.

In the interrogation room

"Then let me ask again, your name?" Ye Min looked at Wen Yi opposite him.

Wen Yi sighed: "I have answered this question many times."

"But the name you provided doesn't exist in the system." Ye Min frowned. "Do you know what this means?"

Wen Yi tilted her head: "Does this mean your system needs to be upgraded?"

Gao Yiyuan, who was sitting in the corner, was stunned when he heard this, and then he started typing on the keyboard with loud clacking sounds.

A low laugh came from the front.

Wen Yi turned her head and her eyes fell on the man who had been silent. He had strong features and a tall physique. The muscles under his dark T-shirt were taut, giving people a sense of oppression.

He noticed Wen Yi's gaze and smiled slightly, the scar on his right broken eyebrow becoming more obvious: "Don't be nervous, we are not bad people."

Wen Yi laughed dryly and replied, "...Brother, what you said doesn't seem very convincing. You look like you could beat ten of me."

Now it was Ni Qianfan's turn to be stunned. Did he look so unsportsmanlike?

Ye Min's mouth twitched, then she clenched her pen and continued to ask, "What's your purpose for coming to Yunhu City?"

"travel."

Ye Min raised her eyes: "Alone?"

Wen Yi nodded: "I like going out alone."

"Which hotel are you staying in now?"

Wen Yi showed a helpless expression: "I was arrested before I even found a place to live."

Ni Qianfan took over the conversation, his voice gentle but inquiring: "Where do you live? Where are your parents?"

Wen Yi lowered her eyes and said in a hoarse voice, pretending to be sad: "My family... doesn't want me anymore. Let me go on my own."

She added silently in her heart: I'm sorry, Mom and Dad, although this is not the truth, it is the most reasonable way to make it up.

Ni Qianfan hummed, as if accepting the explanation: "Specific address?"

"It's in a remote mountain village. I can't tell you the address."

Ni Qianfan's eyes flashed, and Ye Min put down her pen and knocked on the table: "Miss Wen, please cooperate seriously."

"I'm very serious." Wen Yi suddenly raised her eyes to look at the one-way glass. She knew Gu Yifeng was outside and said meaningfully, "Maybe there are some places that can't be found on the map."

"The current situation is not favorable to you!" Ye Min's face turned cold. "If you really want to prove your innocence, then don't beat around the bush."

"Then may I ask," Wen Yi coughed lightly a few times, her neck still hoarse from being strangled, "What crime did I commit? I was kidnapped, threatened, and almost died at the hands of that man.

Isn't it your job as police officers to investigate the truth of a case? Why do you want the victim to testify on his own?

Just because I didn't die in that car, I become a suspect? Where is the evidence?

"We are indeed investigating the case. Three explosions have occurred in Yunhe City in early May this year, Yunhu City in mid-June, and Yunchuan City this month." Ye Min flipped through the documents in his hand and said calmly:

"And you were rescued from the fourth explosion. We need you to explain whether you were present at the first three crime scenes, and how you ended up at the last one."

"Explosion? What explosion?" Wen Yi frowned, looking confused. "Did you make a mistake? I'm the one who was kidnapped! How could I be at the scene of an explosion?"

Ni Qianfan's tone was calm but testing. "Can you explain how you were able to survive the bombing unscathed? In the previous three incidents, no survivors were found at the scene."

"What the hell are you talking about?" Wen Yi was stunned. "Who died? What does it have to do with me? I'm just an ordinary person. I was knocked unconscious by that man, and when I woke up, I was captured by you."

Ni Qianfan smiled slightly, his tone still gentle: "Have you ever thought about whether you are really an 'ordinary person'?"

Wen Yi's pupils shrank. What did they know?

"What else can I be if not an ordinary person?" She raised her voice. "Why are you asking me this?"

Ye Min stared into her eyes and slowly said, "Have you ever killed anyone?"

"I..." Wen Yi's heart trembled suddenly, and she hesitated for a moment. She didn't have an answer to this question.

The door of the interrogation room suddenly opened, and Gu Yifeng walked in: "Ye Min, you go out first."

Perhaps because she spoke too much in one breath, Wen Yi couldn't stop coughing.

"Pour her a glass of water." Gu Yifeng added.

Ye Min nodded and left quickly with a complicated expression.

Gu Yifeng sat down opposite her, and neither of them spoke.

Wen Yi took a sip of water to soothe the discomfort in her throat, and quietly studied the man across from her: What exactly are they investigating? Could it be that they... discovered her secret?

"Miss Wen," Gu Yifeng spoke first, "Can you tell me what happened on the ice cream truck?"

Her fingers curled up slightly, and after thinking for a moment, she told the story of how she saved herself.

"You were able to remain calm in that environment," Gu Yifeng praised. "It's really not easy."

"That's right." Ni Qianfan agreed.

Wen Yi subconsciously relaxed her shoulders. He seemed to really believe that she was a victim, not a suspect in the bombing.

"If you hadn't reacted promptly," Gu Yifeng continued, "I'm afraid we would have taken two bodies out of the freezer."

His tone was calm, as if he was simply stating a fact. "Not everyone is as lucky as you. For example, the other deceased was killed with a single knife."

Ni Qianfan paused after hearing this, then nodded.

"Killed with one knife?" Wen Yi looked up at Gu Yifeng and asked in confusion, "Wasn't she strangled to death?" As she spoke, she subconsciously touched her neck.

Gu Yifeng stared at her, his tone suddenly becoming serious: "I made a slip of the tongue. The deceased was strangled to death. However, this is internal information held by the police. How did Miss Wen know this?"

Wen Yi's heart tightened, but she pretended to be calm on the surface: "I'm just speculating. After all, serial killers have similar modus operandi."

"Serial killer?"

"No...isn't it?" Wen Yi vaguely realized that the more she explained, the worse the situation seemed to be.

Gu Yifeng smiled slightly, but the smile did not reach his eyes: "Miss Wen is very knowledgeable and has such a thorough understanding of serial killers."

"It's okay..." Wen Yi forced a smile.

"But I never said from the beginning that this was a serial murder case," Gu Yifeng leaned forward and said, "There was only one body in the car. How did you determine that he was a serial killer?"

Wen Yi's heart sank. She was tricked!

Before he could even think of how to argue, Ni Qianfan said in a serious tone, "If you continue to be so vague, we have reason to suspect that you are related to the murderer, or even an accomplice."

Gu Yifeng looked at her, his tone cold. "Ms. Wen, it is your obligation to cooperate with the investigation." His voice was low and oppressive. "Hidden things will only make things more complicated."

Wen Yi's fingertips paused slightly on the glass. She slowly raised her head to meet Gu Yifeng's gaze. Her eyes were turbulent, but then quickly calmed down.

"I can cooperate," Wen Yi said softly, but with a firmness that would not compromise, "but I will only tell this to one person."

She paused for a moment, "Besides, I need to get my bag first."

Thirty minutes later, a police officer walked into the interrogation room carrying a haze blue handbag.

Wen Yi took the bag, quickly checked the contents, and breathed a sigh of relief - her wallet was still there.

She was silent for a moment, then pulled out a yellowed business card from her wallet and gently pushed it towards Gu Yifeng, with a hint of expectation in her eyes: "I'll only tell him if he's still here."

Gu Yifeng reached out and took the business card. His eyes stayed on it for a few seconds and his brows slowly furrowed.

He didn't say anything, but handed the business card to Ni Qianfan beside him.

The latter took a quick glance, his expression obviously changed. He looked up at Gu Yifeng, his voice filled with surprise: "This business card... looks old."

Gu Yifeng nodded, but the fine lines between his eyebrows gradually deepened.

He looked up at Wen Yi and said in a hoarse voice, "Where did you get this business card?"

Wen Yi looked at the slightly surprised expressions of the two people in front of her, and felt a little uneasy.

Could it be...that something happened to that policeman?

She pursed her lips and spoke slowly: "Of course he gave it to me personally."

"He gave it to you?" Ni Qianfan put down the business card, frowning slightly. "You mean... this police officer gave it to you personally? Are you sure it was him?"

"You don't believe it? Look at the back, he left me a message." Wen Yi raised the corner of her mouth slightly.

Gu Yifeng flipped the business card with his fingertips, and when his eyes fell on the line of words on the back, his expression paused slightly.

He didn't say anything, but just gently put the business card back on the table.

Ni Qianfan also took a closer look, and then asked with a hint of inquiry: "How do you prove that this was left for you?"

Wen Yi was silent for a moment, then slowly spoke: "Fifteen years ago, Qingluan Mountain."

The air seemed to freeze for a second.

Wen Yi noticed that Gu Yifeng lowered his eyelids, hiding the ripples in his eyes.

She didn't know what she had said wrong, and the air in the interrogation room suddenly became heavy.
