Chapter 17: No suicide allowed in the military camp!
"Wu Ziqing? This name seems familiar..." Wan Jianjun narrowed his eyes and thought for a moment, "I remember that Wu Ziyu, the commander of the Sixth Brigade under Marshal Cao, had a brother named Wu Ziqing."
"Yes, it's him." Situ Xin took over.
"That Brigade Commander Wu is no ordinary man, highly regarded by Marshal Cao. Deputy Regimental Commander Situ's treatment of his brother Wu Ziqing is quite appropriate," said Military Supervisor Wan. "However, if we only stop at this level regarding the murder of Regimental Commander Shen... Brother Situ, you won't be able to explain this to Marshal Zhang."
"Of course. I have already arranged for someone to conduct a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding Captain Shen's murder. We should have a conclusion soon."
"Then I assume the investigators you've arranged are all astute individuals. Could you bring them in for me?"
Situ Xin didn't expect that General Wan would be so inquisitive, and he suddenly felt nervous.
"Master Inspector, allow me to speak a little," Han Chi interrupted Situ Xin, who was at a loss for words. "Regiment Commander Shen's murder is a matter of which only a few mid- and high-ranking officers at the regimental and battalion levels know the details, and so far it hasn't caused a major stir within the army. The people we've sent to investigate this matter are doing so in secret, fearing that publicity might disrupt the morale of the troops. Therefore, please refrain from interfering too hastily, lest we arouse suspicion among the entire army."
"Oh, so... that's a reasonable reason. Well, I won't ask about it for now, but I hope to get a result within three days at the latest, otherwise I won't be able to explain to the Marshal." Military Supervisor Wan seemed to accept what Chief of Staff Han said, but neither Han Chi nor Situ Xin noticed that after he said this, a barely perceptible smile appeared at the corner of his mouth.
"But since you're already at the barracks, you should at least send a routine telegram to Marshal Zhang, right?" Situ Xin said. "I suggest you first take a look at the barracks after the attack the day before, so you can report back to the Marshal."
Supervisor Wan nodded, "Brother Situ is indeed very thoughtful. You can make the arrangements accordingly."
"Please move forward." After saying this, he winked at Han Chi. Han Chi immediately understood and, along with Situ Xin, accompanied Supervisor Wan out of the reception barracks, while the young guard followed closely behind without a word.
"That's where Captain Shen met with the accident, right?" Supervisor General Wan pointed towards the innermost part of the row of barracks.
"Yes, that was Captain Shen's private barracks. We all witnessed his murder from a distance, but unfortunately no one saw the murderer."
"Let's go and take a look there first." General Wan didn't discuss with the two people behind him, and walked straight in the direction indicated with his guards.
"Military Inspector! You..." Situ Xin didn't expect him to change his mind suddenly. He was caught off guard and was afraid that he would discover the existence of Yin Chuan and the other two.
"Nothing, I just went to the scene to take a look. I won't interfere with your investigation."
Situ Xin and Han Chi had no choice but to follow closely, hoping that he would not notice the flaw.
As they walked towards their destination, several soldiers passed by them without paying any attention. At first, General Wan didn't pay any attention, but after a few steps, he seemed to sense something was wrong and looked back.
"Is there anything I can do for you, Military Inspector?" Han Chi saw him turn around and asked.
"Oh, nothing." Wan Jianjun said perfunctorily, then glanced at the handsome officer next to him. The officer returned his look, indicating that he felt the same way.
Without saying much, they quickly reached the door of Captain Shen's barracks. "You two don't need to follow me in. I'll just take a quick look inside and then come out," said Supervisor Wan.
Situ Xin and Han Chi nodded repeatedly. Supervisor Wan then led the officers into the barracks, leaving the two of them outside.
"Did you discover something just now?" General Wan asked the officer in a low voice.
"Yes, there seems to be a familiar person among those soldiers." The officer replied.
"From Luyuan Village?"
The guard nodded.
"Hmm... I have an idea in mind."
After Supervisor Wan finished speaking, he began to carefully inspect the barracks. Aside from Chen Hui's body and head being removed, the entire room remained exactly as it had been the day before, even the bloodstains still remaining.
"Hmm...do you think there's any flaw?"
The officer chuckled and said, "I can't say for sure. I'd rather you be the judge."
Supervisor Wan snorted softly, "Three days... isn't that a bit too long?"
The officer did not answer, but seemed to have discovered something strange, and his eyes focused on a pool of dried blood next to the table - the place where Chen Hui's head fell.
"Look, there are words here."
Supervisor Wan leaned over to take a look and couldn't help but gasp, "It seems... three days is indeed too long!"
There were only a few light red words written on the tent wall next to the bloodstain:
No suicide allowed in the military camp!
Just as she passed by Situ Xin, Han Chi, and someone in front of them who seemed to have a high status, Linlang felt more nervous than ever, fearing that they would recognize her. However, Yin Chuan, who was walking in front of her, secretly held her wrist tightly, which made her feel much more at ease.
When they reached the end of the row of barracks and turned a corner, the three of them finally breathed a sigh of relief. Following the instructions of the soldiers ahead, they arrived at the reconnaissance squad's station and found a secluded corner. Du Yunzhang took off his military cap and breathed a sigh of relief.
"Oh my god, that was a close call. Who knew I'd run into Situ Xin and Han Chi just as I was about to leave? Luckily I listened to you, Old Yin, and didn't salute or greet them, otherwise they would have discovered me."
"No, it was thanks to Linlang's soul-separation technique that we were able to escape successfully, otherwise..." Yin Chuan said with a smile.
"We're lucky," Linlang said. "If one of the guards hadn't been addicted to opium, how could I have performed my hypnosis successfully?"
"Why don't we take this opportunity to escape from the military camp?" Du Yunzhang said anxiously.
"No, we can't just leave like this. I must solve the mystery of this case. Besides, the soldier knocked unconscious in the barracks will be discovered soon, and we won't get too far. I must take this opportunity to learn more about the circumstances surrounding the murder of the regimental commander's guard, Duan Biao."
"You're really persistent!" Du Yunzhang sighed, "Then Linlang and I will risk our lives to accompany you!"
Yin Chuan chuckled and thanked him.
"By the way, did you notice? When we passed by Situ Xin and the others just now, two unfamiliar faces walked past us. It seemed that their status was higher than Situ Xin and Han Chi?" Linlang asked seriously.
"I noticed that, too, but..." Yin Chuan held his chin in his hand and thought, "I feel like I've seen that pretty boy somewhere before... but I can't remember where."
"Really? Aren't you afraid of being recognized by Situ Xin... I... didn't dare to look up at them." Du Yunzhang said hesitantly.
"This is not like you, Lao Du. I've never seen you so cowardly." Yin Chuan sneered.
"Okay, let's stop teasing each other and get down to business," Linlang said. "But Brother Yin, why didn't you erase the message Brother Du left behind? Aren't you afraid of being discovered?"
"Whatever they found out, I think that sentence Lao Du wrote is quite interesting—'No suicide allowed in the barracks!' Tsk tsk, what would the murderer's reaction be if he saw that?"
Yin Chuan's words made Linlang a little puzzled. Even Du Yunzhang, who had written those words in a fit of excitement because of Situ Xin's inconsistency, didn't quite understand what Yin Chuan meant.
"Let's go and check out where Duan Biao's body was found. The guard should be able to tell us the exact location."
