Chapter 90: The Happy Times Are Fleeting - Special Recruitment?
The next day, before Wen Han even got out of bed, she heard people chatting outside.
"It's so late, why aren't you up yet?"
"It's a holiday, let the kids sleep in a little longer."
That sound! Wen Han, who was still half asleep, immediately got out of bed and opened the door upon hearing it: "Grandma!"
"Hey, hurry up and put your clothes on!"
Wen Han went back to get dressed, and her grandmother had already followed her over and closed the door to make sure Wen Qingke was still busy in the kitchen.
Wen Han had barely slipped one arm of his wool sweater on when his grandmother took out a red envelope she had prepared beforehand and stuffed it under his pillow: "Don't let your dad see this, understand?"
"Where's Ruoruo? Never mind, his grandma is with you too. You can let him know tonight, okay?"
"Okay." Now both red envelopes are his.
Wen Qingke was about to ask his mother what flavor of glutinous rice balls she wanted, sesame or red bean, when he didn't see her. Realizing something was wrong, he immediately opened Wen Han's bedroom door: "Mom, you can keep that money for yourselves!"
Grandma pretended to look at the cat: "Oh my, this cat is really big... What money? I didn't give any money, I just came to see your cat."
"The children are all grown up now, you can keep that money yourselves."
"I know! Didn't I say I didn't give a red envelope? I just came to see the cat!"
Fat Nai'er lay on Wen Han's pillow, and Wen Qingke naturally didn't dare to let the cat move away, so he could only chuckle and say, "Oh, Dad just packed the fruit and rice cakes. The glutinous rice balls are cooked, come and eat, Hanhan, hurry up and get dressed."
The heating was on at home, and Wen Han wasn't wearing a down jacket. Her grandmother even tried to hold the cat, almost straining her back in the process.
Wen Han said with a grin, "Let me carry you."
"Hanhan, is this your cat?" Grandpa examined it for a while, then hesitated and said, "Isn't it too fat? I read on my phone that it's bad for a cat's health if it's too fat."
"That's how it is, it's incredibly strong."
After cooking large glutinous rice balls and small glutinous rice balls, Wen Ruo returned. He had gone with Wen Ruan. Wen Hao was persistent, and since it was the first day of the Lunar New Year, Wen Ruan stayed to help.
"Ruoruo, you're back." Grandpa, unaware that Grandma had already prepared red envelopes, pulled them out of his pocket again. "Grandpa's giving you red envelopes—"
"dad!"
As is customary every year, Wen Qingke and his parents began to make excuses and delay each other.
Fei Nai'er smelled the aroma of the glutinous rice balls and wanted to grab them, but Wen Han could only hold her down. Not knowing if cats could eat glutinous rice balls, she only dared to give her some soup.
"I heard that Qinghe's kid fell in love last semester." Grandpa muttered while eating peanuts. "Sigh, he's still in school at such a young age. If you ask me, it wouldn't be too late to date after he goes to college."
Wen Han immediately perked up her ears when she heard the gossip. Her second uncle's family only had one Omega child, who was in the same high school as Wen Han and the others.
Wen Han asked, "How are their grades?"
"It seems like her grades are pretty good, and she's doing well at school."
They should be secretly happy that they're not thugs! With Gu Cheng and the others as a comparison, Grandpa will definitely be satisfied.
Grandpa sighed, but a smile played on his lips. His face was flushed from the air conditioning, and he excitedly began to tell his cousin Wen Han's love story.
Grandpa was a stage actor in his youth, and he was incredibly skilled at reciting lines. Even a simple campus romance could be told with dramatic flair. Wen Han and Wen Ruo were completely engrossed in listening until the system shrieked, "Host, your cat is licking a glutinous rice ball!"
Wen Han then realized that Fei Nai'er had almost licked the glutinous rice ball skin to pieces, so she had to put it down to pour out the cat food.
Wen Qingke was stunned: "So you're still negotiating?"
"He's doing great! Qinghe said cheerfully that it doesn't matter which university he goes to."
Grandma disliked that Grandpa always said these things at the dinner table, and instructed him: "Hanhan and the others will be in the second semester of their junior year of high school when school starts, so you must study hard."
"Okay, Grandma."
When her grandparents came, they brought a bunch of green vegetables. As a result, Wen Han ate the combination of stir-fried green vegetables as New Year's Eve dish for several days in a row.
——
Once the year is over, time flies and it's time for the new school year to start.
Wen Han felt weak all over at the thought of going to school, but no matter how much she complained, she still had to go to school to register in the end.
Upon arriving at school, the principal, on a whim, ordered all classes to do a thorough cleaning to welcome a "new beginning."
Wen Han was assigned to clean the hallway and complained, "Why do we have to wipe the tiles in the hallway too?"
Yang Lanjun said, "Stop complaining. At least the toilet is close to us, which makes it convenient to wash the rags."
The tiles looked clean, but when wiped with a rag, they turned black and grimy. Wen Han thought about how she usually liked to lean against the wall and felt a chill run down her spine. She went to the bathroom to wash the rag.
"Wen Han!" Lin He greeted her, "Where did you go for the New Year?"
"An island," Wen Han frowned. "Why don't you do a thorough cleaning?"
“We’re here to check how clean each class is doing,” Lin He shrugged. “Who told you to quit at the end of last semester?”
Wen Han regretted it; she should have waited until after the start of the semester to withdraw.
Jing Yu was wiping the windows when Wen Han went back to the classroom to get a new rag. She happened to see him wiping and couldn't help but laugh: "Is this your first time doing housework?"
"This is the last window," Jing Yu said. "Shall I come and help you clean the tiles later?"
"No need, I'm almost done there too."
The students worked themselves to the bone and finally cleaned the classroom. The homeroom teacher then gave a motivational speech before telling everyone to collect their textbooks.
Receiving textbooks every semester is a tough experience. The place where the textbooks are stored is quite far from their teaching building, and the books are numerous and heavy. When the students go to the cafeteria to eat after carrying the books, their hands are trembling.
Wen Han is used to holding cats, so holding books is naturally easy for her too.
"Ruan Ruan!" Gu Cheng saw Wen Ruan. "I'll help you carry it!"
Wen Ruan said shyly, "No need, I'll take it myself."
It's really strange that Gu Cheng hasn't dyed his hair this semester.
Fang Songxia was in heat today and couldn't come to school, so Wen Han naturally had to help him carry his books. Too lazy to make two trips, he simply stacked the two sets of books together.
Jingyu asked worriedly, "Isn't it too heavy?"
Wen Han weighed it in her hand for a moment: "It's alright." She was just worried that if it was too high, the book might slip down.
"Give me half." Jing Yu pulled out a large stack of them.
"Oh, that's too much." Wen Han was holding books in both hands, so she couldn't take them from Jing Yu's arms. "Remember to tell me if you can't carry them anymore."
Wen Han neither underestimated nor overestimated herself. After returning to the classroom, she shook her wrist and felt nothing.
Wen Ruan's book was forcibly taken away by Gu Cheng and returned to her. Although Yang Lanjun no longer liked Gu Cheng, she still disliked Wen Ruan. Upon seeing this, she rolled her eyes.
Seeing her like this, the class monitor quickly changed the subject: "Did you know that the special recruitment is going to be brought forward? The date is set for the beginning of next month."
Yang Lanjun asked in surprise, "Isn't it supposed to start next semester?"
Wen Han listened with little interest. This special recruitment had nothing to do with them, the Betas. It was for selecting Alphas or Omegas who were exceptionally talented. Simply being smart or physically strong wasn't enough. This time, it would be good if the entire Linjin could produce just one.
He remembered that when he was in the third year of junior high school, an Alpha from a high school in Linjin was selected and even featured on television. That Alpha was able to track down pheromones left behind three days earlier all the way to the neighboring province; his sense of smell was like a cheat code. He didn't even need to take the college entrance exam to get into the best military academy.
The class monitor said, "Perhaps we're just too lacking in geniuses?"
“There are no fixed rules for geniuses, no requirement that one must emerge every year,” Yang Lanjun said. “I don’t think our school can produce even one.”
"That's true," the class monitor laughed. "But there's one thing we can get our hands on: the sports meet! They say the principal really went all out; the first prize is a mini-fridge!"
"Refrigerator!" Wen Han became interested. Although there was a refrigerator at home, it was a refrigerator!
"Wen Han, you refused to participate in the race when we were in the first year of high school. You have to agree this time, right? You're the fastest runner among the Betas in our class."
For the sake of the refrigerator, Wen Han had to participate, but the class monitor directly signed him up for the 3,000-meter race. When Wen Han found out, he gave him a good beating.
*
"Wen Han, if you can't run anymore, stop." When the sports meet arrived, Fang Songxia asked worriedly, "Can you really finish the 3000 meters?"
Wen Han was warming up, and Jing Yu put a number on him; he was number 006.
All he could think about was the refrigerator.
