Chapter 26 The determination to change Little Furry
Five o'clock in the morning, White Tower Square.
Xu Nuo woke up earlier than the alarm clock. Wei Yan didn't look for her last night, but asked someone to arrange a temporary apartment for her. She went to bed early and felt refreshed today.
Arriving at the square, the large stone-paved ground was already sparsely dotted with people exercising, most of them jogging to warm up. With a serious expression, she circled the group several times, hands behind her back, selecting a target area and finding a quiet spot to sit down.
Since the goal was to find a partner who could at least participate in the Vulcan Cup, she couldn't focus on figure and appearance. After all, she had already kissed a top-notch sentinel in every aspect, so she didn't have such high demands for such worldly desires.
The focus should be on strength, personality, and rapport. The rapport can be discussed later, but she should be able to get a rough idea of the first two.
Xu Nuo touched his chin, his eyes sweeping over the sentry ten meters away without any concealment. His expression was solemn, and he frowned in thought from time to time.
The sentries in the square had noticed the guide as soon as she stepped onto the first stone step.
The White Tower has always maintained strict control over them. They must stay separate from their guides during daily lodging, meals, and training, fearing that any interaction between the two might accidentally injure the guides. In recent years, they've also banned anyone except Rank B Sentinels from actively speaking to guides during their free time. As a result, some lower-ranking Sentinels, past their optimal mating age, have never received a guide's attention.
This was the Grand Plaza, the most common spot for Sentinels. Guides rarely passed through the surrounding area. Therefore, early this morning, when the girl with the air of a guide wandered around them, her hands behind her back, the seemingly peaceful Sentinels were already in an uproar.
The well-trained soldiers did not make any noise, except for the following: those who were running straightened their backs, showing off their toned arms and muscles; those who were boxing bent their waists and lowered their heads, revealing their smooth waist lines; those who had just reached the rest area strode back to the training area and continued to sweat profusely; those who were fighting were determined to beat their opponents to death, with their panda eyes showing off their strongest force.
Throughout the square, especially in the area that Xu Nuo was focusing on observing, the sentries became active as if they had taken stimulants, like spirited peacocks, frantically showing off their tail feathers in front of the only guide.
And Xu Nuo...Xu Nuo was still struggling to identify it.
She found that she couldn't guess the specific level of the sentinels by observation alone. After scanning everyone, she could only barely judge which ones were higher in level than her. As there were more people, her perception became increasingly vague.
She didn't feel any aura that was unique to high-level sentinels at all.
Just as she was lowering her head, a long furry tail suddenly appeared in front of her, and then two soft little bamboo paws came over. Seeing that she did not resist, the round head immediately came over to rub against her legs.
This is a big, sleek black cat.
Seeing Xu Nuo's attention, it raised its paw, licked the paw pad with its pink tongue, and then blinked its green eyes at her.
"Meow~" Even the sound is coquettish.
Xu Nuo covered his chest and couldn't withstand the cute attack.
She looked around, trying to figure out whose spirit it was. The kitten's tail whirred around her finger, drawing her attention back and whispering, "Meow."
Well, no matter whose spirit it is, let her jerk it off first.
Xu Nuo stretched out his finger and placed it on the kitten's head, habitually exchanging scents first to prevent stress, but the kitten immediately raised its head to sniff, then stretched out its tongue and began to lick it.
His fingers were wet, and the barbs of the kitten's tongue felt a little itchy on his skin. Thinking that the spirit body had empathy with the sentinel, Xu Nuo felt a little embarrassed and withdrew his hand.
The kitten tilted its head to look at her in confusion, and when she didn't react, it gathered strength on the spot and jumped onto the girl's lap.
"Meow~"
Xu Nuo couldn't help laughing: "Okay, since you're so proactive."
She rubbed the kitten's head and scratched its chin. It purred comfortably, retracted its paw pads, and then squeezed into her arms when she wasn't paying attention.
"Meow~" It buried its head in Xu Nuo's arm, as if it had found a comfortable position and lay down.
Xu Nuo was amused by it, and gently stroked its fur, saying softly, "Whose kitten are you?"
The kitten seemed to be asleep, purring silently, its fluffy fur emitting heat, like a well-behaved hand warmer.
Xu Nuo simply stood up with the cat in his arms.
It’s strange to say, there are very few Sentinel spirits encountered recently. The most common one is someone’s big gray wolf and the two from the guard team. They are all large beasts. It’s been a long time since I saw such a cute little spirit.
Although Xu Nuo's personal preference is for large beasts that look ferocious but are actually well-behaved rather than small furry animals, it's not bad to suddenly change your taste after watching them for a long time.
She walked towards the group of sentries, and as she got closer, with every step she took, the group of sentries became more excited, and they exercised at double speed, as if they wanted to swell their muscles to the sky.
"Meow——" At some point, the little black cat woke up, raised its little head in his arms, and stared at the group of people with unfriendly eyes.
Xu Nuo patted its head and said, "Sit down."
The little black cat let out a wronged "wool" and sat down with a "click".
Xu Nuo walked towards one of the sentries who had his back to her and stood in front of him.
She hesitated for a moment and then said, "Hello, Sentinel."
The sentry immediately turned around as if he had been given an injection of chicken blood, and said excitedly: "Hello, guide!"
"Um, um... is it convenient to ask about your level?" Xu Nuo said, "If it's not convenient, it's okay, you don't have to tell me."
"Convenient, guide! I'm C-rank, my spirit form is an owl, I've been training in the White Tower for two years, I've been on ten C-rank missions and two B-rank missions, and I've successfully completed them all and returned alive!"
He emptied himself out like a bean, clumsy and sincere.
Xu Nuo laughed: "That's amazing."
The sentry's face flushed, and the dozen or so eyes around him were filled with envy and jealousy.
"Nice to meet you," he stammered. "How can I help you?"
This sentence made Xu Nuo imagine the customer service of a certain mobile hotline in his previous life. It is said that customers are God, and the attitude of the sentinels towards the guides is indeed better than God.
Looking back, even B-level sentinels like Jiang Chen were very respectful to her when they first met her. The A-level sentinels, such as Wei Yan and Zong Lan, were the opposite. Although their way of getting along with the guides was mainly based on protection, it was relatively equal.
It seems that even A-level Sentinels are scarce, and there is no shortage of matching Guides.
This wasn't good news for Xu Nuo. She was currently at a rather awkward B-rank, and her mental strength had improved after the previous battle, reaching a mid-level. She was more than capable of battling with B-rank sentinels throughout the entire battle, but to guarantee a successful outcome, she'd need an A-rank, and they didn't lack guides.
Moreover, where in this vast white tower can one find the rare A-level sentinels?
She whispered, "Do you know where there are A-level sentinels?"
The sentry immediately said, "Are you looking for a partner or a companion? If you just need a partner to work with for a while, you don't have to look for just one sentry. All of us here are willing to serve you!"
As soon as he finished speaking, everyone's eager eyes were focused on Xu Nuo, and the black cat in his arms immediately stood up.
Xu Nuo grabbed the back of its neck and asked, "Everyone?"
"Yes, you just arrived by car yesterday, so you don't know much yet. In the White Tower, it's very common for guides to be one-on-many, especially for low-ranking sentries like us. If you are willing to let us serve you, it would be the greatest honor. No matter what the task is, we will complete it for you, even if it means going through fire and water."
Xu Nuo glanced at the twenty or so sentries around him. They were all strong and energetic. "This... is a bit of a big move."
She just wanted to participate in a competition and then consider long-term development if it was suitable.
"How could that be? You don't need to leave the White Tower after accepting the mission. Just leave it to us. When the mission is completed, it will be counted on you."
Xu Nuo was at a loss - don't I have to go to the competition?
"Of course, if we come back injured... you... you could give us some purification." The sentry said cautiously.
Xu Nuo was silent for a moment and sighed.
He panicked: "What's wrong? Is it really difficult? Actually, it doesn't matter if I don't purify myself. I'm already very satisfied to be able to serve you. I have never spoken to the guide before, so I'm not fully prepared. Maybe I was too abrupt. Please don't be angry..."
Xu Nuo shook his head.
The disparity in treatment between guides and sentries was so great that she felt uncomfortable.
She looked toward the top of the distant laboratory building.
Tang Ningyue’s gentle and kind smile seemed to still be before his eyes, and the well-organized laboratory behind him was contributing to the strengthening of the White Tower.
But the sentries in the square were also contributing. They were the largest group in the White Tower, risking their lives to do the most dangerous work—clearing swarms of mutants, guarding attacked human settlements, exploring untouched contaminated areas... but in the end, they couldn't even hope for the purification of the guides.
I heard that every year, the decision-makers of the White Tower would discuss important matters with the S-level Sentinel leaders. Have those top people never thought about balancing the treatment of both sides?
Due to their inherent weakness of acute five senses, almost all Sentinels are extremely eager to purify the pollution in their bodies and maintain emotional stability. If this continues, it will inevitably drive the lower-level Sentinels to sacrifice themselves for their guides like moths to a flame, exacerbating class differences.
By then, the later stage of the world-destroying war will begin, and more and more sentinels will find it difficult to accept purification and will only become consumables, either dying in battle or becoming deformed - the management of the White Tower will be completely out of balance.
This may be the final plot line of the original text. A huge catastrophe destroys the world, all forces are reshuffled, and a small number of surviving humans rebuild their homes again.
Perhaps by then, the differences between the guide sentinels would no longer be so great, but the cost of such a change would be enormous. Even Xu Nuo could not guarantee that she could survive this disaster - the plot line had already changed dramatically because of her existence.
She lowered her head: "But if..."
If the main plot line could be completely changed by human influence...
So, having traveled through time and space, as the only person who knows the ultimate direction of this world, does she have the responsibility to bring about change?
In the past, I just kept running away, but danger kept coming and I couldn't escape. Is it really right to stop struggling because I was afraid of death?
She clenched her fists.
Then change it, starting from this moment.
She seemed to have made up her mind.
"It's okay, I can purify you now."
