Chapter 6: On the sixth day of her reserve, she was about to fall into it.
"Didn't you say we should sleep together?"
Pei Yunhe was not polite at all. He threw the flannel blanket on the sofa, lifted the comfortable silk quilt on the bed, and lay down in it sideways.
The mattress beside her was concave, and a warmth silently climbed up along Dan Yin's pajamas that were connected to the mattress. It soaked her skin and drew out an intoxicating blush from deep within.
She felt like half of her body was burning. She didn't dare look at Pei Yunhe. She turned sideways, holding a corner of the quilt and lay down obediently, staring blankly at the bed and the shadow of a person on the wall illuminated by the warm yellow light.
Pei Yunhe was right behind her, motionless, his breathing steady and long.
Shan Yin had already prepared herself mentally. From the moment she agreed to the marriage, she naturally knew what would happen in the future.
Sleeping in the same bed was just the first step. She told herself to calm down. It was just a marital obligation and she couldn't reject it.
But when she was lying with Pei Yunhe, she didn't understand why she was still so nervous.
The heat from half of his body had spread to his entire body, and the soft and smooth silk was also contaminated. Unconsciously, Dan Yin even deliberately slowed down his breathing, maintaining a side-lying position, his whole body so stiff that he almost became a sculpture.
She was afraid that the spreading wildfire would follow the silk and burn the people who were trapped in the forest with her.
Pei Yunhe's breathing became shallower and shallower. Shan Yin listened attentively, wondering if he was asleep.
After secretly counting a few hundred numbers, Pei Yunhe's breathing almost disappeared. Shan Yin's shoulders twitched unconsciously for a moment, and invisible ripples appeared on the silk quilt. She let out a long sigh.
Suddenly, a huge wave surged in front of her. She was so scared that she trembled and subconsciously lay down defensively. Pei Yunhe suddenly stood above her, covering her with all his might.
Those pale eyes took on a layer of divinity under the dim light, like a sea god standing among huge waves in a storm.
He stared at her, the turbulent waves inside her trapped her, and she was about to fall into them.
“Pah.”
After the crisp sound, the bewitching light was swept away by the waves, darkness dragged everything into tranquility, and the room was calm.
"I'm not used to sleeping with a night light on. Thank you for getting used to it."
Pei Yunhe was still leaning on top of Shan Yin. Shan Yin saw his Adam's apple rolling up and down as he spoke.
His voice was originally as clear and mellow as jade, but now, perhaps because of fatigue and exhaustion, it seemed to have some magnetism and become a little sticky.
He still looked down at her, his eyes not yet adjusted to the darkness, and they couldn't see each other's expressions clearly.
Shan Yin heard him say one more sentence: "You don't have to stop breathing."
After saying that, he turned over and lay back down. The mattress sank into its previous arc, as if nothing had happened.
Only then did Shan Yin regain his breathing rhythm.
The lingering scent of citrus lingered in the air, tinged with a faint hint of sandalwood. It was the scent Pei Yunhe had after a bath. The orange scent of the shower gel gave the sandalwood he had been wearing all year round a fresher, more vibrant aroma.
She took a few cautious breaths, not daring to smell too much, for fear of being completely invaded by his scent from the outside in.
"Should I put a few bowls of water in the middle for you?"
The sticky and magnetic sound comes again. It sounds nice, but it doesn’t make sense when it is played alone.
"What?"
"laugh."
His mocking laughter made her realize instantly that he was laughing at her for being too nervous and not showing any mercy to this marriage.
"I'm not..."
"I won't touch you."
Pei Yunhe didn't even want to listen to her explanation. He just said five cold words between them, as if he was even more merciless than her.
Dan Yin blinked, sleepiness made him lose the ability to think.
"Why?"
She asked accordingly.
"Why?"
He seemed to have never thought that she would ask this. He was stunned for a moment with his mouth slightly open, and he didn't understand why she needed a reason for the previous question.
Why else? He just...he respected her and cared about her feelings.
Why else?
Then, his voice suddenly rose an octave.
"Are you questioning me?"
Pei Yunhe suddenly sat up from the bed again. In the darkness, he stared at Shan Yin closely, like a lion with red eyes staring at the neck of its prey.
The air was tense with anger.
Shan Yin subconsciously clutched the silk quilt in front of his chest.
His arrogance dissipated instantly.
What else can he do?
He was completely defeated by her.
Pei Yunhe looked at Shan Yin silently for a long time, his mouth slightly open, his upper and lower teeth touching, and veins bulging on his temples.
He fell back with a thud.
"Because, because there are no family planning products." I racked my brains to come up with this reason.
“…”
Shan Yin didn't expect that he would actually answer. After a while, he hummed "oh" softly.
He frowned again and added through gritted teeth, "I never prepared it when I didn't need it."
She didn't dare to say "oh" and just nodded slightly in the dark as a response.
The night fell silent again in this small space.
After a long time, an unknown amount of time, Shan Yin heard Pei Yunhe's breathing become steady again, thin and shallow, just like the cool night.
She opened her eyes again, staring at the ceiling, and couldn't help but think of the question she had asked subconsciously just now.
Why?
She was not questioning Pei Yunhe about anything, nor was she as scared or nervous as Pei Yunhe imagined.
On the contrary, judging by her subconscious thoughts, she did not seem to resist having a relationship with Pei Yunhe.
At least I won't resist in the future.
But why not?
Is it just because of the obligation of marriage?
Shan Yin rejected this idea in his heart.
She has a pure and kind heart, as gentle as a magnolia, but she also blooms on a high branch and cannot be easily picked.
If she is asked to bow her head, even if it means enduring humiliation, it is okay for her to show a little resistance.
But she didn't seem to resist.
He clearly doesn't seem to be an easy person to get along with, but for some reason, after spending these few days with her, he still gives her a warm and friendly feeling.
She thought she might be wrong. People have too many sides, and she couldn't make a final judgment about someone based on a momentary impression.
She felt inexplicably close to Pei Yunhe, as if they had known each other for many years. It seemed as if his gentleness was hidden beneath his sharpness, and that sharpness would not really hurt her.
Thinking of this, Shan Yin wanted to turn his head to look at the person next to him, to see what Pei Yunhe looked like at the moment.
But she suddenly felt sleepy, and she seemed to be glancing sideways repeatedly in her dream. She seemed to see Pei Yunhe also looking sideways, opening his eyes and staring at her without blinking.
But she seemed unable to turn her head in reality. She wanted to move, but her body was too lazy. She couldn't tell whether she moved or not. It was too dark at night and she only remembered that she had a deep and good dream.
The dream was of a gorgeous midsummer. The sunshine made people feel very comfortable. Everywhere was soft and warm, and the aroma of orange soda lingered around.
She wandered in her dreams and fell into a soft cloud.
She woke up naturally the next morning. The sun was rising outside the room, shining through a thin layer of gauze curtains and falling on the carpet. The dust turned into elves dancing in the beams of light. Seeing that she was awake, he invited her to enjoy the lazy and comfortable time together.
Dan Yin raised his head, stretched his neck comfortably, and when he opened his eyes again, he looked straight into a pair of eyes.
It seemed as if those eyes had been staring at her without blinking like this last night, but this time there was no surging wind and waves in them. Behind the layer of transparent lenses that refracted the light, there was only a hint of fatigue and resentment.
Shan Yin came back to her senses and lay down properly, pulling the quilt up. She hesitated whether to say good morning to Pei Yunhe. Pei Yunhe put down the book in his hand and sniffed.
"Awake? If you are, go wash up, otherwise I'll go first."
Is he waiting for me?
Was he afraid that she wouldn't be used to using the bathroom he had used?
This was Shan Yin’s first thought.
Her still hazy gaze fell on Pei Yunhe. He had obviously been up long ago, now lazily sitting half-leaning on the headboard, a pillow propped upright behind him. A book lay beside him, and he was still wearing the same blue-gray silk pajamas from last night, the collar unbuttoned and slightly open, revealing his distinct collarbone and shoulder sockets.
White and blue-gray are intertwined, and the silk fabric rises and falls on his chest with his breathing, making people inexplicably want to peek into the spring scenery hidden beneath the shadows.
He easily caught her gaze and held it carefully.
He lowered his voice: "Still watching?"
But he didn't need to act threateningly anymore, as his voice had long since changed, becoming hoarse and a sign of a cold.
Shan Yin immediately asked, "Do you have a cold?"
Pei Yunhe's prestige was gone.
He glanced at Shan Yin unhappily and said, "Thanks to my wife."
Shan Yin followed his gaze and her eyes widened instantly——
She forgot that she had the habit of rolling up the quilt when she slept.
"I didn't realize you were such a gentle person, but you sleep in such an unruly manner."
Pei Yunhe woke up several times last night. Each time he pulled the edge of the quilt to cover himself, but he rolled it away again in the blink of an eye.
She finally fell asleep and was sleeping soundly. He didn't dare disturb her, so he tiptoed to the sofa and took back the flannel blanket that he had abandoned on the bed. Before he had used it for half an hour, it was snatched away by the person tossing and turning beside him while he was drowsy.
In the dim light of dawn, he opened his eyes and saw that the two quilts on the bed were rolled up by her side. His and hers... in fact, they were both his, and now they were deeply entangled together.
Pei Yunhe felt his heart soften again, as if he was lying in the clouds, with his eyes open, no longer sleepy.
Shan Yin noticed that his eye sockets seemed to have sunken a little further, the corners of his eyes drooped weakly, and even some blue stubble had grown on his chin.
She had no desire to peek at those erotic scenes anymore. Her guilt reached an unprecedented peak. She lowered her head and spoke in a soft and gentle voice like a mosquito: "I'm sorry..."
Pei Yunhe had no intention of blaming her. Seeing her like this made him seem very harsh and difficult to deal with.
He reached out and touched his nose bone, then turned over and got out of bed, not wanting to look at her any longer.
But there was still a lot of arrogance in his words.
He suddenly remembered something and seized the opportunity to say, "Since you want to apologize, then do me a favor as an apology."
