Chapter 169 Xia Qianqian, why are you doing this to me?
Qin Yan followed the production team leader outside, completely bewildered. Seeing the team leader's radiant face, he assumed it was something good and secretly wondered if someone from the Qin family had come.
The village entrance was already surrounded by layers of people, and the villagers pointed at the green military uniforms on the vehicle and marveled at it, with discussions surging like a tide.
"Have you heard? They're here to support Young Master Qin!"
"Wow, the Qin family really has a lot of influence in the provincial capital!"
Qin Yan's heart skipped a beat as he listened to these words—something was wrong!
With my limited connections in the provincial capital, how could I possibly have the ability to cause such a commotion?
Just as they were speculating, the jeep door opened, and several men in crisp green military uniforms jumped out.
The square-faced man at the head of the group swept his sharp gaze across the crowd and asked in a deep voice, "Fellow villager, is this Xiangyang Village?"
The production team leader quickly stepped forward, a smile plastered on his face: "Comrade, this is Xiangyang Village! I'm the production team leader. May I ask what brings you comrades here so late at night?"
The square-faced man snorted coldly, his gaze suddenly locking onto Qin Yan like that of a hawk.
Qin Yan recognized the person as Li, the deputy director of the Revolutionary Committee. Li was a favorite of the No. 3 leader, and it was usually impossible for Qin Yan to even see him in the provincial capital. Why would he suddenly come to this remote and impoverished place?
Looking at his gloomy face, he doesn't look like someone who came to a wedding banquet at all; he's clearly here to confront and reprimand people!
The production team leader, watching from the side, was terrified and quickly tried to smooth things over: "Comrades, you must be tired from your journey. Why don't you go to the village office for a drink of water?"
"No need." The square-faced man waved his hand dismissively, then asked Qin Yan, "What brings you here today?"
Qin Yan's mind went blank, and he didn't know how to answer.
Seeing that things were not going well, Mr. Xia quickly replied, his face plastered with a fawning smile: "Comrade, you may not know, but Qin Yan has come today to present betrothal gifts to my daughter!"
The square-faced man glanced at him, looking at his servile manner, and a flash of undisguised disgust crossed his eyes.
"Your surname is Xia?" The square-faced man suddenly turned his gaze to Mr. Xia, his tone carrying a hint of inquiry.
"Yes, my surname is Xia—" Mr. Xia did not know the purpose of this person's visit. Seeing that the man was interested in him, he wanted to say a few more words, but before he could speak, he was interrupted.
"Then that's it! We received a tip that you were trying to marry a capitalist's daughter, and the evidence is irrefutable! Now, come with us!"
Qin Yan felt as if struck by lightning; his legs went weak and he almost collapsed to the ground. He gritted his teeth to keep from collapsing.
How could anyone know?
The Xia family has already been driven to the southern part of the city, and Xiangyang Village is far from the provincial capital, so they would never inform on this matter.
Who exactly reported this matter to the Revolutionary Committee?
He had originally planned it all out: first, get engaged to Xia Wenwen, then rely on the remaining connections of the Xia family and Xia Wenwen's insightful guidance, and once he returned to the city and established himself, he would slowly get rid of them!
But now...
"No, you've got it wrong!" Cold sweat slid down Qin Yan's forehead. "I was just following the instructions of my elders. I don't know anything about the Xia family's background."
Even at this point, Qin Yan still tried to shift the blame.
Deputy Director Li didn't believe him at all. He stepped forward, his military boots making a dull thud on the muddy ground: "Now that things have come to this, you still want to argue?"
He turned to the crowd and called out loudly, "Is Comrade Xia Qianqian here?"
Xia Qianqian was slightly surprised; she hadn't expected the Revolutionary Committee to call her name directly. But since she had been called, she had nothing to fear. She straightened her back and walked out from the crowd.
Lu Zheng followed closely behind, his eyes fixed intently on Qin Yan, wary of him resorting to desperate measures.
"Xia Qianqian, did you write the whistleblower letter?!"
Qin Yan was struck dumb, his face filled with disbelief.
Has she forgotten her own feelings for her?
A year ago, she followed him around like a little tail, calling him "Brother Qin Yan" in a sweet voice. She went to great lengths to get him a Shanghai brand watch.
How dare you turn around and bite him after only a year?
He has already humbled himself to show her his affections and even promised to marry her in the future. What more could she possibly want?
"Why did you do this to me?!" Qin Yan lunged forward to grab Xia Qianqian's arm, but was kicked away by Lu Zheng. He could only collapse on the ground and roar, his eyes bloodshot, like a trapped beast on the verge of death.
Upon hearing this, Mr. Xia's eyes were filled with resentment like poisoned needles, piercing Xia Qianqian's body.
The Xia family had endured humiliation and hardship for so many years, and finally got the chance to attach themselves to the Qin family, only to have it all ruined by this treacherous little bitch!
"Comrade!" He suddenly lunged forward, roaring like a madman, "Qianqian is my daughter too! She's also a capitalist's daughter, and she can marry Lu Zheng, so why can't Wenwen?!"
"Yes! Why?!" Qin Yan, as if grasping at a straw, scrambled to his feet, his bloodshot eyes fixed on Deputy Director Li.
"We're both daughters of capitalists! Why is Lu Zheng safe while I get arrested?! This is just you settling personal scores!"
Deputy Director Li acted as if he had heard the biggest joke in the world. He slowly dusted off the dust on his sleeves without even raising his eyelids: "How can they be the same?"
His gaze swept over Mr. Xia and Qin Yan's pale faces: "Comrade Xia Qianqian had already published a notice in the newspaper severing ties with you. Later, she even took the initiative to go to the countryside, donate her property, and actively participate in the labor reform of the production team. She had a firm stance and extremely high awareness! And what about you?"
He suddenly pointed in Xia Wenwen's direction: "Trying to conceal one's background, currying favor, and even..."
He looked coldly at Qin Yan, "Someone reported that you were using the pretext of betrothal to actually plan speculative activities! How can that be the same thing?!"
Mr. Xia and Qin Yan instantly turned ashen-faced and could no longer utter a single word.
"What are you waiting for? Take him away!" Deputy Director Li's brows furrowed, clearly having lost patience.
He gave a look to the people behind him, and two men in green uniforms immediately stepped forward, picked up Qin Yan like a chick, and dragged him directly into the jeep.
The tires screeched as they rolled over the gravel road, jolting Qin Yan out of his daze.
He struggled to cling to the car window, his pale, distorted face reflected in the glass. His gaze swept across the crowd and met Xia Qianqian's eyes.
She stood in the shadows where the torches couldn't reach, the moonlight outlining her cool profile, her expression indistinct.
Qin Yan's heart suddenly began to pound wildly, and an absurd yet exhilarating thought burst forth: Did she still have feelings for him?
She reported herself not to expose the Xia family, but out of jealousy!
She was jealous that he had proposed marriage to Xia Wenwen!
Otherwise, why would she have gone back to the Xia family in the first place? Why was she kidnapped to a cave by me and Xia Wenwen, and then never mentioned it after we got out?
So all she did was to force herself to turn back?
"So that's how it is..." Qin Yan muttered to himself, a twisted smile involuntarily spreading across his lips.
