Chapter 48 Meeting with Biological Parents
Knock knock!
Knock knock!
Xia Qianqian felt her heart pounding in her chest. She looked at Lu Zheng's handsome face, which was getting bigger and bigger in front of her, closed her eyes, and her long eyelashes trembled slightly like the wings of a butterfly about to take flight, waiting for Lu Zheng's passionate kiss to fall.
Just as the enchanting atmosphere was reaching its peak, a clear child's voice rang out.
"Mom, I want to sleep with you tonight." Er Ya ran over at some point.
Xia Qianqian and Lu Zheng were startled and stood up straight instantly, their faces still flushed with the afterglow of passion.
"Er Ya, do you want to sleep with me?" Xia Qianqian came back to her senses and looked at Er Ya, who was hugging a small pillow, and asked curiously.
Er Ya turned her head away somewhat awkwardly, but stood on tiptoe and rubbed her head against Xia Qianqian's hand.
Xia Qianqian subconsciously reached out and stroked Er Ya's hair. Er Ya's hair was soothed by the touch, and she said, "Grandma said it will rain tonight. You must be afraid of thunder since you came from the city. I'll sleep with you."
Seeing Er Ya's proud yet adorable appearance, Xia Qianqian felt her heart melt. Although she still longed for Lu Zheng's body, at this moment, she wanted to hold this sweet and soft little person in her arms.
"Okay, you can sleep with Mom tonight."
Hearing Xia Qianqian say this, Er Ya immediately beamed with joy, nodded in satisfaction, and quickly handed the small pillow in her hand to Xia Qianqian, urging, "Mom, let's go to sleep quickly."
"Okay." Xia Qianqian took Er Ya's little hand, and the two walked into the house.
Lu Zheng stood there, watching their departing figures, and smiled helplessly. He saw Er Ya clinging tightly to Xia Qianqian, the two like mother and daughter, making him feel like the superfluous one.
However, Lu Zheng did not feel disappointed; instead, he felt a surge of warmth and relief.
"That's good," he thought to himself, then quickly walked to the basin and splashed cold water on his face, extinguishing the heat in his heart. Afterward, he strode back into the house.
Lu Zheng walked into the room and saw Xia Qianqian holding Er Ya's little hand under the light, applying face cream to the back of her hand while patiently teaching her how to take care of her skin.
Lu Zheng stood quietly to the side, his gaze falling on Xia Qianqian's delicate and smooth skin. He couldn't help but think to himself: No wonder Qianqian's skin is flawless all over her body. It turns out she has to do so much skincare.
She should have been living a life of luxury and comfort, but now she's living a simple life with me in this rural village.
A strong sense of responsibility rose in Lu Zheng's heart. He secretly vowed that since Xia Qianqian had married him, he would never let her suffer with him and would make sure she lived a happy life.
After a moment of contemplation, Lu Zheng said to Xia Qianqian, "You and Er Ya go to sleep first, I'm going up the mountain."
Upon hearing this, Xia Qianqian immediately frowned and said worriedly, "It's going to rain soon, and it's so dark. What are you doing up the mountain so late? Can't you go tomorrow?"
Seeing her concern for him, Lu Zheng's lips unconsciously curled up: "Don't worry, I'll just wander around nearby. The animals will all go back to their burrows before it rains, so I'll go catch a few rabbits."
After saying that, he picked up a flashlight and went out of the house.
Seeing her mother's worried expression, Er Ya comforted her like a little adult: "Mom, don't worry, Dad has gone hunting in the mountains before, and he's a very good hunter."
Seeing that Lu Zheng was very familiar with the situation in the mountains, Xia Qianqian finally felt a little relieved.
Just then, she noticed Er Ya's sleepy little head nodding, so she patted Er Ya's head and said softly, "Er Ya, let's go to sleep early. You and your sister still have to help with chores tomorrow."
Er Ya nodded, stretched out her little hands and hugged Xia Qianqian's neck tightly, snuggling in her arms like a docile kitten. Before long, even and soft breathing came from Er Ya's little mouth.
Xia Qianqian couldn't fall asleep because she was worried about Lu Zheng. Seeing that Er Ya was already asleep, she simply sat up, picked up a book, and forced herself to read it while still feeling sleepy, planning to sleep after Lu Zheng returned.
Time passed second by second, and the night grew ever deeper.
Suddenly, a bolt of lightning, like a silver snake, ripped through the dark night sky, instantly illuminating the entire room. Immediately afterward, thunder roared, and large raindrops began to fall, pattering against the windows.
"Why hasn't Lu Zheng come back yet?" Xia Qianqian looked out the window at the rain that was getting heavier and heavier, and couldn't sit still any longer.
She put on her clothes, grabbed her umbrella, and went out of the house to greet Lu Zheng as he returned.
As soon as Xia Qianqian reached the courtyard gate, she heard heavy footsteps approaching her.
She immediately became alert. It was the middle of the night, and only the woman and child were left at home. What if a bad guy sneaked in?
She quickly turned around, ran to the woodpile, found a thick branch, held her breath, and tiptoed toward the gate.
The dark figure outside the gate was getting closer and closer, about to step into the courtyard. Xia Qianqian raised the tree branch, ready to smash it down hard.
Just at this critical moment, a familiar voice pierced through the wind and rain: "It's me."
It turns out Lu Zheng is back!
Xia Qianqian was both surprised and delighted. She threw the branch on the ground and ran towards Lu Zheng. When she saw him return unharmed, she scolded him, "It was raining so hard, do you know how worried I was about you?"
Seeing that she had been waiting for him, Lu Zheng hugged her tightly with heartache and said softly, "It's my fault for being late. Look what I brought back?"
Xia Qianqian looked up at his back.
On Lu Zheng's back were four plump rabbits and two pheasants, their colorful feathers shimmering in the rain, and their claws occasionally twitching.
"So many?" Xia Qianqian was somewhat surprised.
Didn't everyone say that many people in the village are starving? Why hasn't anyone thought about going into the mountains to hunt and improve their meals?
Lu Zheng wiped the rain off his face, seemingly guessing what she was thinking, and explained, "It's all thanks to the fact that I found their nest by chance before. Today, taking advantage of the rain, they were all staying quietly in their nest, so I took the opportunity to catch them all. We'll bring these with us when we go to my mother-in-law's house tomorrow, as a token of our appreciation."
When Xia Qianqian heard that he was still thinking about getting things for his biological parents, she glared at Lu Zheng and said, "They don't want me as their daughter anymore, and you're still so concerned about them."
Lu Zheng listened, looked into Xia Qianqian's eyes, and said seriously, "No matter what, they are the ones who gave birth to you, so it's only right that we send them some gifts to show our respect. If you still don't like them after meeting them, then we should have less contact with them in the future."
"That's more like it."
Xia Qianqian nodded in satisfaction when she saw that Lu Zheng wasn't the kind of old-fashioned person who would force her to be filial to her parents no matter what.
The next morning, just as dawn was breaking, Lu's mother prepared a steaming hot breakfast and urged them to eat quickly so they could go to the Xia family's house.
It was only then that Xia Qianqian learned that her biological parents also had the surname Xia, which was quite a coincidence.
After the meal, Lu Zheng put the gifts into the baskets at both ends of the carrying pole, hoisted it onto his shoulder, and said to Xia Qianqian, "Let's go."
When they finally stepped into the territory of Willow Village, Xia Qianqian involuntarily slowed her pace, a feeling of trepidation welling up in her heart as she approached her hometown.
Lu Zheng, having ascertained the location of the Xia family's residence, returned and saw Xia Qianqian still standing there. He asked with concern, "Why did you stop? Are you exhausted? Why don't we find a place to rest?"
"You're going to the Xia family? I'll take you there." The person Lu Zheng had asked earlier thought they couldn't find their way and came back.
Xia Qianqian said to Lu Zheng, "I'm fine, let's go."
The woman looked Xia Qianqian up and down, then exclaimed in amazement, "Oh, you're Xia's daughter, aren't you? You look exactly like Xia when she was young, like you were made from the same mold!"
As she spoke, the older sister-in-law quickened her pace and shouted at the top of her lungs, "Sister-in-law Xia, your daughter has come to see you!"
Suddenly, a series of hurried footsteps came from the front yard, and several people rushed out.
Xia Qianqian's gaze was immediately drawn to the woman in the crowd.
Although the woman was much older than her, her features bore an uncanny resemblance to hers.
Without needing anyone to introduce her, Xia Qianqian knew that this person was her biological mother.
