Chapter 188 Qianqian, Wait for Me
Lu Zheng looked at Xia Qianqian, at how she was in so much pain that she was about to faint, yet she insisted on holding on to reassure him. Something slowly settled in her red eyes—courage born from despair.
Since Qianqian is so brave, how can he back down?
However, as a man, he couldn't just stand by and watch Xia Qianqian die; he would definitely find a way to protect them!
"What? Still planning to put on a brave face?" Lu Rensheng said sarcastically after hearing their words.
Lu Zheng stood up, his spine as straight as a pine tree: "I, Lu Zheng, will walk my own path! Just because you bowed down for power back then doesn't mean I have to follow your old path!"
"The old way?" Lu Rensheng seemed to have heard the biggest joke in the world. "What new way do you have? Just watch your woman hemorrhage inside? Watch my grandson die in the womb?"
He stepped forward, staring at him, and said, "Lu Zheng, stop deceiving yourself! You're a trapped beast now; you have no choice but to beg me!"
"I choose my own life!" Lu Zheng's voice was hoarse but firm. "Qianqian too! We'll protect our child!"
Lu Rensheng narrowed his eyes: "So you're saying you'll protect yourself! Wait until she bleeds to death, then I'll see how you protect her!"
"Close the door," Xia Qianqian suddenly said.
Lu Zheng did as instructed and locked Lu Rensheng outside.
“I knew this pregnancy would be dangerous.” Xia Qianqian took a breath. “Three days ago, I sent someone to the provincial capital to invite a Western doctor. I paid three times the consultation fee to hire a top obstetrician. Judging by the distance, he should arrive in the middle of the night.”
"Western medicine?!" Lu Zheng exclaimed in surprise, grabbing her icy hand. "This is wonderful!"
"Then I'll go pick him up now!" Lu Zheng said, about to leave, but Xia Qianqian stopped him.
"Go and bring the old ginseng from our room. Make me a bowl of ginseng soup first."
"Hey! I'm going right now!" Lu Zheng turned and rushed out, wincing in pain as he bumped into the door frame, but grinning like a fool—there's always a way out! Qianqian always manages to surprise him!
Outside the door, when Lu Rensheng heard the words "old ginseng," his eyebrows twitched almost imperceptibly, and a mocking sneer curled at the corner of his mouth.
"Hmph." Lu Rensheng snorted coldly. Did they think they could defy fate with just a broken ginseng? How laughable!
As Lu Rensheng watched Lu Zheng's retreating figure, the last trace of warmth in his eyes turned to ice. If he couldn't persuade him, then he wouldn't.
He wanted to see how long this arrogant young couple could hold out.
Thinking this, he turned and walked towards the black sedan parked at the alley entrance. When the car door opened, the warm air mixed with the smell of cigars rushed out, dispelling the wind and snow covering him.
"Dad!" Lu Yaoting immediately leaned over, his secret joy barely concealed in his eyes. "How is it inside? My brother..."
"Shut up." Lu Rensheng loosened his tie, leaned back in his leather seat, and said in an icy tone, "Don't flaunt your little schemes in front of me. Your older brother is ungrateful; he has no place in the Lu family's affairs from now on."
Lu Yaoting was overjoyed inside, but he dared not show it on his face. He quickly nodded and bowed, "Yes, yes, Dad is wise!"
He glanced furtively in the rearview mirror towards the Lu family's courtyard, and seeing no movement, couldn't help but ask again, "Then... if something really happens to the woman in labor inside, will my brother...?"
“It’s none of your business.” Lu Rensheng closed his eyes and tapped his knees lightly with his fingertips.
Just then, a rich aroma of ginseng wafted in through the cracks in the car window, carrying the bitter scent of herbs and the heavy fragrance of medicine.
Lu Yaoting frowned: "What's that smell?"
“Old ginseng.” Lu Rensheng didn’t even lift his eyelids, his tone full of sarcasm. “Trying to keep her alive with ginseng soup? How laughable. Can a few ginseng rootlets fix a breech baby?”
Inside the delivery room, Lu Zheng was carefully blowing on a black ceramic bowl to warm it. The ginseng soup was thick and amber-colored, simmering in the bowl. The aroma of herbs mixed with ginger filled the air, dispelling some of the bloody smell.
"Drink slowly." He scooped up a spoonful, blew on it until it was warm, and then brought it to Xia Qianqian's lips.
Xia Qianqian sipped the ginseng soup slowly, and a warm current instantly flowed through her body as it slid down her throat. Her previously trembling fingertips seemed to become a little steadyer.
She looked at the beads of sweat on Lu Zheng's temples and his red eyes, and smiled weakly: "Don't worry, the baby and I will be fine."
During a break in the contractions, she said to Lu Zheng, "Lu Zheng, let's go pick up the doctor. It should be time."
"good."
Lu Zheng responded, grabbed his military overcoat and wrapped it around himself, then turned around and tightly grasped Xia Qianqian's cold hand: "Qianqian, wait for me to come back. I will definitely bring the doctor as soon as possible. You must... you must hold on."
Xia Qianqian looked at his tightly pursed lips, nodded, and squeezed his hand in return: "Go quickly, be careful on the way."
Lu Zheng responded heavily, turned around and rushed out, the wooden door slamming shut behind him.
He quickly hopped on the bicycle leaning against the wall. A thin layer of snow had settled on the seat, but he didn't bother to wipe it off. With a push of his legs, the bicycle shot off like an arrow.
The wind and snow stung his face, but he paid no attention, feeling an inexhaustible energy coursing through his body.
He was going to pick up the doctor; he was going to save Qianqian; he wanted their child to be born safely!
This thought sustained him, allowing him to ride fast even on icy roads. The bicycle wheels crunched over the snow, making a clear "crunch-crunch" sound that was particularly distinct in the quiet snowy night.
Lu Zheng rode his bicycle around the village entrance three times. He didn't know which direction the doctor would come from, whether he would take a long-distance bus or hitch a ride.
He first rushed to the only bus stop in the village, which was deserted. Then he pedaled his bike to the old locust tree where the bus dropped off passengers, leaving no trace on the ground except for his footprints.
"Haven't we arrived yet?" Lu Zheng gritted his teeth, his breath instantly swallowed by the cold wind.
He looked up at the leaden sky. The snow was falling even harder, and the distant highway looked like a frozen white snake, hidden in the wind and snow with no end in sight.
can not wait!
Lu Zheng suddenly turned his bike around. He decided to ride along the road, even if it took him ten or twenty miles, to bring the doctor back!
About ten minutes after he started riding, a faint shout suddenly came from the wind and snow, as if someone was calling his name.
"Brother Lu!"
Lu Zheng slammed on the brakes, the tires slipped on the ice, and he was almost thrown off.
He squinted and looked toward the source of the sound, and saw a dark green jeep slowly driving toward them through the wind and snow. The front of the jeep was covered in snow, making it look like a moving snowdrift.
"Peng Fei?" Lu Zheng was both surprised and delighted.
The jeep stopped in front of him, the window rolled down, and Lu Zheng immediately saw Lao Hei in the passenger seat—the very person Qianqian had sent to the provincial capital to fetch a doctor three days ago!
A huge weight lifted from his heart, and his voice trembled with excitement: "Old Hei, where's the doctor? Qianqian has already gone into labor!"
"The doctor is in the back carriage! Get on the train quickly, we're going back now!"
