Chapter 117 The Whole Family's Pampered Darling
Lu Zheng was thinking about Xia Qianqian. After drinking a few cups, he told No. 3 that he was going to pick her up. He then called Peng Fei and the others and hurried towards the square.
Just as they turned the corner of the alley, they saw a slender figure standing in the moonlight; it was Xia Qianqian.
"Qianqian!" Lu Zheng rushed over in three strides, then suddenly slapped his forehead: "That's right! There should be an old Chinese medicine doctor in Nancheng, right?"
Peng Fei was startled by his sudden shout. Seeing Lu Zheng's anxious expression, he turned pale. "Your sister-in-law is injured?!"
He frantically reached for the medicine packet at his waist: "Here's some hemostatic powder and bandages, sister-in-law, hang in there for now!"
Xia Qianqian's cheeks flushed red, and she glared at Lu Zheng with annoyance: "Don't listen to his nonsense! I'm fine."
She said to Peng Fei, "You guys can fry these eggs tonight to have with your drinks."
Afraid that Xia Qianqian would let something slip, Lu Zheng quickly interjected, "That's right, Qianqian! These eggs were all found at Command Post No. 8!"
He deliberately raised his voice and winked at Xia Qianqian:
"Commander No. 3 said that all of these are our spoils of war!"
As he spoke, he stuffed the eggs into Peng Fei's arms: "Find a clean kitchen tonight and have someone fry some eggs for Qianqian. She hasn't had dinner yet. Also, steam a bowl of egg custard, make it soft!"
Xia Qianqian was bewildered by his series of actions, but she still nodded in understanding.
Lu Zheng pulled her towards the command post: "Let's go in and rest first."
At this time, the command post had been taken over by the Revolutionary Committee. The defector No. 8 henchmen fled in a hurry, scattering documents all over the ground, overturning tables and chairs, and leaving bloodstains on the ground.
Fortunately, some soldiers were already cleaning up, and several south-facing rooms had been cleaned.
Lu Zheng picked a room with a heated kang bed and touched the surface, which was still warm: "This room is fine. The kang is warm, so you can lie down and rest for a while."
He turned to leave, saying, "I'll go find a doctor right now and have him take a look at you."
"Don't bother." Xia Qianqian tugged at his sleeve, her eyes filled with weariness. "It's almost dawn, let's talk about it tomorrow. Get a good night's sleep tonight."
Lu Zheng couldn't wait any longer. He told Xia Qianqian to rest well and then turned and walked out the door.
Watching his hurried figure nearly crash into the door frame, Xia Qianqian smiled helplessly.
This person was extremely anxious.
Her fingertips gently touched her lower abdomen, and that little bit of expectation quietly resurfaced in her heart. In the end, she didn't stop him anymore.
About half an hour later, the door was pushed open, and Lu Zheng helped an elderly man with white hair and beard walk in. The old man had an old medicine box slung over his shoulder and was the most famous traditional Chinese medicine doctor in Nancheng.
Xia Qianqian's eyes lit up, and she quickly stood up: "Dr. Zhang? What brings you here?"
Dr. Zhang stroked his beard and smiled: "Miss Xia, it's been a long time. This young man dragged me out of bed in a hurry. Come on, let me take a look."
Xia Qianqian sat down and placed her hand on the pulse pillow.
The old doctor placed his fingers on her wrist, first frowning slightly, then slowly relaxing, and suddenly exclaimed "Eh!" before a smile slowly bloomed on his face.
"How is she?" Lu Zheng's heart was in his throat, and he wished he could take her pulse.
Dr. Zhang lowered his hand, his eyes filled with relief as he looked at Xia Qianqian: "Congratulations, Miss Xia! Congratulations, Miss Xia—it's a happy pulse."
"A pregnancy test?" Lu Zheng's mind went blank for a moment, as if he hadn't heard clearly. "Could you say that again?"
"Silly boy!" Doctor Zhang chuckled, raising his voice, "Your wife is pregnant."
Lu Zheng's eyes shone brightly. He looked at Doctor Zhang, then at Xia Qianqian, and suddenly scooped her up in his arms, spinning her around three times: "Qianqian! We're having a baby!!"
Xia Qianqian felt dizzy from being spun around by him, and laughed as she patted his back.
Seeing this, Dr. Zhang stroked his beard and grinned from ear to ear: "Alright, alright, put her down! Pregnant women can't take this kind of treatment!"
He took out paper and pen from his medicine box. "I'll prescribe a medicine to help with pregnancy. You'll have to be extra careful during the first three months..."
The doctor had just left when the first rooster crowed in the distance.
Lu Zheng, however, was wide awake, rubbing his hands and pacing around the room: "Qianqian, let's go back to Xiangyang Village when it's light! Mom will make you some chicken soup and fry ten or eight eggs..."
He squatted down by the kang (a heated brick bed), reached out to tidy up her stray hairs, and his fingertips couldn't help but brush against her cheek.
Xia Qianqian blushed under his gaze and reached out to stop his restless hand: "Will Number 3 let you go?"
She frowned, her voice extremely low: "Number 8 just fell, that's the time when they need people, what if he also wants to keep you in the Revolutionary Committee..."
Lu Zheng suddenly laughed, gently placing his hand on her lower abdomen, his palm against her warm skin, his tone full of smugness: "I was originally thinking of what excuse to make to refuse, but now—"
He deliberately dragged out his words, a sly glint in his eyes, "The little one in my belly has given me the best excuse. She's truly my lucky star, already knowing how to care for her father even before she's born."
Seeing his beaming face, Xia Qianqian smiled and placed her hand on the back of his hand: "Okay, then let's go back to Xiangyang Village together."
Just as Lu Zheng had predicted, when No. 3 heard that Xia Qianqian was pregnant, he not only personally approved the pass, but also had a basket full of supplies prepared.
Peng Fei and the others saw them off to their car. Xia Qianqian peered out the window and suddenly remembered something: "It's a pity we didn't get any news about Lao Hei this time."
Lu Zheng said, "Your health is precious now, you can't travel anymore. I remember about Lao Hei's matter, I'll go and inquire about it myself once you're settled."
Xia Qianqian wanted to say something more, but Lu Zheng shut her up with a piece of candy: "Sit still, or the baby will protest."
After a bumpy ride, we finally arrived at Xiangyang Village as dusk fell.
The old locust tree at the village entrance still looked the same as before, except that a small figure was standing under the tree. As soon as it saw the two of them, it flew over like a little swallow.
"Mom!" Er Ya, wearing a floral cotton jacket, rushed into Xia Qianqian's arms.
"Hey! Slow down!" Lu Zheng reacted quickly, scooping Er Ya into his arms and saying urgently, "You can't pounce on Mom right now."
Er Ya's little body froze in mid-air, her big eyes blinking rapidly as she cautiously asked, "Is Mommy... sick?"
Xia Qianqian glared at Lu Zheng reproachfully, then said softly, "Mommy isn't sick. Your daddy was just worried you might bump into the baby in Mommy's tummy—from now on, you'll be the big sister."
Er Ya's eyes lit up instantly, and she broke free from Lu Zheng's hand and ran towards the village: "I'm going to tell Grandma right now!"
As Lu Zheng led Xia Qianqian by the hand to the gate of the courtyard, they saw his mother-in-law chopping chicken heads with a cleaver from afar.
Seeing the two enter, she rushed out in three strides, wiped her hands haphazardly on her apron, grabbed Xia Qianqian's hand and pulled her into the house: "Is what Er Ya said true?!"
Xia Qianqian nodded, and then her mother-in-law smiled: "You must have suffered a lot on this trip! Mom will make you some chicken soup right away!"
She pulled Xia Qianqian's hand and pressed her towards the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed), but her eyes were fixed on Xia Qianqian's stomach.
Lu Zheng grinned from ear to ear, and put the basket he was holding on the table: "Mom, pull gently, don't tire Qianqian out."
"I know, I know!" the mother-in-law replied, but her hand still wouldn't let go of Xia Qianqian. "Go lie down on the kang! I'll go stew the chicken right away."
