Chapter 72 Evidence Destroyed
Xia Qianqian said, "Please wait a moment, I'll be right back."
After saying that, she left the captain's office.
As soon as she stepped outside, Xia Qianqian noticed a subtle change in the way the villagers looked at her.
Among those gazes were scrutiny and suspicion; she could even faintly hear several villagers whispering about her.
Xia Qianqian sneered inwardly. She would never believe that none of this was orchestrated by anyone.
Someone must be stirring things up behind the scenes, deliberately exaggerating her identity issues to make her lose face in the village.
Meanwhile, on a path outside Xiangyang Village, Huang Zhaodi was receiving a bundle from Liu Xiao'e.
After Liu Xiao'e and Lao Wu were driven out of Xiangyang Village, they went to stay with relatives in the neighboring Liushu Village. Their reputation in Xiangyang Village was already terrible, and in Liushu Village, they became the talk of the town.
Perhaps out of shared misfortune, the two decided to live together. With the help of relatives, the fifth brother found a job feeding pigs; although it was hard work, at least he had something to eat. Thus, they were able to barely make ends meet.
Liu Xiao'e missed her daughter and was unwilling to accept the situation, so she kept coming to Xiangyang Village to find her daughter and inquire about the latest news about Xia Qianqian.
The whole whistleblowing was actually Liu Xiao'e instigating Lao Wu to go to Nancheng.
When Liu Xiao'e heard that Xia Qianqian had been stripped of her sanitation worker qualification, she felt the long-suppressed anger in her heart instantly dissipate, and she even woke up laughing in her dreams at night.
Early in the morning, Liu Xiao'e couldn't wait to spread the news. At that moment, she smugly told her daughter, "Zhao Di, just wait and see! That Xia Qianqian doesn't even know her own limitations, daring to mess with us. I'll make sure she can't stay in this village anymore!"
Upon hearing her mother's words, Huang Zhaodi revealed a relieved smile, but it quickly froze on her face as her brows furrowed tightly.
"But she stole Lu Zheng away from you and even harmed you, causing you to be driven out of the village. Mom, you have no idea how scared I was living alone in the house at night!"
As she spoke, tears welled up in her eyes, as if they might fall at any moment.
Hearing her daughter's tearful complaint, Liu Xiao'e held her hand tenderly: "Zhao Di, please wait patiently a little longer. Once Mom has settled down in Willow Tree Village, I will bring you here immediately, and we will never be separated again."
As she spoke, she pulled a small paper packet from her bosom, lowered her voice, and revealed a hint of malice in her eyes: "You'd better keep this safe. When the time is right, throw it into Xia Qianqian's well. Mom will make her pay a heavy price for what she's done, ruin her reputation, and make her unable to hold her head up for miles around!"
Huang Zhaodi listened, a hint of hesitation flashing in her eyes, before she nodded firmly.
After confirming that no one was paying attention, Liu Xiao'e urged, "Let's go back quickly, don't let anyone find out that we've been seeing each other here. If they notice anything amiss and suspect you, that would be terrible."
Huang Zhaodi didn't dare to delay and left in a hurry.
All of this went unnoticed by others, except that Er Ya happened to see Huang Zhaodi sneaking back.
Er Ya tilted her head, thinking to herself: Huang Zhaodi seems to be doing much better than before; the flesh that had thinned out on her face has come back...
At this moment, Xia Qianqian returned to the house and found the newspaper that the Nancheng Revolutionary Committee had mailed to her.
She had originally planned to use the news of severing ties with the Xia family in the newspaper, based on what the comments said, in case the Xia family tried to use it against her. Unexpectedly, it came in handy.
Xia Qianqian pulled out the newspaper that the Nancheng Revolutionary Committee had mailed to her and hurriedly returned to her office.
Lu Zheng had been waiting in his office. When he saw Xia Qianqian return, his eyes held a silent concern. Xia Qianqian met his gaze, and a reassuring smile appeared on her lips.
"Did you bring the evidence?" the production team leader asked.
Xia Qianqian nodded, and the captain continued, "Let me see it. If there's no problem, I'll take it to the city and explain it to the higher-ups."
Xia Qianqian handed over the newspaper with both hands: "Captain, before going to the countryside, I donated the gold that the Xia family had hoarded to the Revolutionary Committee for revolutionary construction. I have long since completely severed ties with the Xia family! I am truly following the Party!"
The captain took the newspaper and quickly skimmed through it.
When he saw the newspaper report about Xia Qianqian donating gold and the commendation from the Revolutionary Committee, he felt as if he were frozen in place.
His mouth was slightly open, but he couldn't utter a word for a long time.
After a long while, he murmured, "I really didn't expect you to have such a firm revolutionary will! You're doing this to contribute wholeheartedly to our revolutionary cause! If this isn't considered not cutting ties with the old forces, then I really don't know what it would mean to cut ties!"
At this point, the production team leader's face lit up with a satisfied smile.
He stood up, somewhat agitated, and said, "Xia, with this newspaper, I feel much more at ease. I will definitely explain this matter to the city leaders. Even if I can't let you continue as a sanitation worker, at least I won't make you write self-criticisms or give apologies anymore, and won't make you suffer that injustice!"
"Thank you, Captain." Xia Qianqian knew this would be the outcome, and now that she heard the captain say it himself, she couldn't help but smile.
"Captain, you can't show favoritism towards her!"
When Huang Zhaodi learned that Xia Qianqian had been stripped of her sanitation worker qualification, she and a group of bored women waited outside the office, hoping to see Xia Qianqian make a fool of herself.
However, after waiting for a long time, not only did the captain not come out, but they also heard bursts of laughter coming from the office.
This greatly worried Huang Zhaodi. A surge of anger welled up inside her, and all sorts of vile thoughts raced through her mind. She felt that Xia Qianqian must have used some kind of seductive trick to seduce the captain.
The more she thought about it, the angrier she became, and the angrier she became, the more she felt that this was indeed the case. Unable to restrain herself any longer, she rushed into the office without a second thought.
The captain was both surprised and delighted by Xia Qianqian's resolute revolutionary actions, but upon hearing Huang Zhaodi's words, his face immediately darkened, and he shouted, "Nonsense! Xia has produced solid evidence; take a look for yourself if you don't believe me!"
As he spoke, he angrily shoved the newspaper in front of Huang Zhaodi.
To everyone's surprise, Huang Zhaodi didn't even look at it before tearing the newspaper to shreds.
Watching the newspaper instantly turn into fragments and fall to the ground like snowflakes, Huang Zhaodi suddenly raised her head and looked at Xia Qianqian with malice.
"Hmph, now that you have no evidence, let's see what you have to say!"
