Chapter 67 You're even jealous of your child?
Looking at the beautiful face so close to his, Lu Zheng's Adam's apple bobbed involuntarily. He was about to lean down and continue his unfinished tenderness—
"Brother Lu!"
An untimely loud voice suddenly shattered the tranquility of the night; Peng Fei's boisterous voice grew louder as it approached.
Lu Zheng froze, the flame that had just ignited in his eyes seemed to be extinguished by a bucket of cold water, leaving only the murderous intent of someone who had ruined his good time.
Peng Fei, oblivious to everything, strode over and said, "Brother Lu, the police said Wei Shufen has confessed! Since you're the ones who found her, you'll have to come with me to the station to give a statement."
After saying that, he yawned without realizing it, but the yawn stopped abruptly halfway through.
He rubbed his eyes and looked at Lu Zheng, feeling that Lu Zheng's gaze... was a little scary? Like he was about to devour someone. He blinked again, wanting to confirm, but saw that Lu Zheng had already looked away, his face regaining its usual coldness, as if the "murderous aura" from just a moment ago was just his imagination.
Hearing Peng Fei's words, Lu Zheng looked at Xia Qianqian with some regret: "Qianqian, the police need someone to give a statement. One of us is enough. I'll go. You go back to your room and sleep. It's already past midnight."
Xia Qianqian was indeed so sleepy that her eyelids were drooping. The ordeal just now, coupled with the emotional turmoil, left her feeling completely exhausted.
Knowing that Lu Zheng was reliable, she nodded, her voice heavy with sleepiness: "Then come back soon."
"Okay, don't worry." Lu Zheng reached out and gently tidied the slightly messy stray hairs on her forehead. The soft and delicate touch of his fingertips made him feel a pang of reluctance.
Peng Fei, watching from the side, finally belatedly realized something. He looked at Lu Zheng, then at Xia Qianqian's slightly flushed cheeks and the ambiguous atmosphere between them, and then recalled Lu Zheng's "murderous" gaze just now...
He slapped his thigh suddenly, inwardly groaning: Oh no! I think I... ruined Brother Lu's plans?!
He shrank back, wishing he could disappear into a crack in the ground and never dare to utter another sound.
Lu Zheng glared at Peng Fei before leaving the courtyard.
Xia Qianqian watched the two figures leave, yawned softly, closed the door, and fell into a deep sleep almost as soon as her head hit the pillow.
Another night passed quietly in stillness.
It was still pitch black outside the window. Lu Zheng returned from the police station and went straight to Xia Qianqian's door, knocking on it.
"Qianqian, wake up, it's time to go."
Xia Qianqian let out a soft moan, rubbing her sleepy eyes. Still drowsy, she mumbled incoherently, "Ugh... I'll sleep a little longer..."
"You can sleep on the way. Let's go to the station first," Lu Zheng coaxed patiently.
"Huh?" Xia Qianqian suddenly opened her eyes, groggily looking up at the window, only to see a deep, dark expanse.
She blinked a couple of times, her mind gradually clearing. Right, Lu Zheng went to the police station to give a statement last night, and she still didn't know when he got back.
Thinking of this, Xia Qianqian instantly became more alert. She went to open the door and looked at Lu Zheng in the faint moonlight from the window, asking anxiously, "Lu Zheng, what time did you get back last night? Was everything alright?"
Lu Zheng had already slung his luggage over his shoulder. Upon hearing this, he turned around, his deep eyes shining brightly in the dim light.
He nodded reassuringly to Xia Qianqian and said in a relaxed tone, "Don't worry, everything went smoothly. Wei Shufen was completely terrified by you last night, and she confessed everything when she got to the police station. I just went there and briefly added some details of what happened, and it was over quickly."
As he spoke, he helped Xia Qianqian put on her coat: "That kid Peng Fei is already waiting for us, let's hurry up and go."
Hearing that the matter had been resolved satisfactorily, Xia Qianqian finally felt relieved. She let out a long sigh of relief, and her tense shoulders relaxed. After quickly tidying herself up, she followed Lu Zheng out of the room.
Peng Fei borrowed a car from somewhere and took the two of them to the bus station.
Upon arriving at the station, Peng Fei pestered Xia Qianqian to help him find a partner. After receiving her promise, Peng Fei grinned and waved goodbye as they boarded the bus.
Xia Qianqian slept soundly the whole way, and she couldn't even remember how she transferred to another bus to get to the county town after arriving in Nancheng.
When she fully regained consciousness, she found herself already on an oxcart heading to Xiangyang Village.
Xia Qianqian rubbed her eyes and asked in surprise, "We're back already?"
His voice was slightly hoarse because he hadn't drunk water for a long time.
Lu Zheng sat down next to her and handed her his canteen: "Drink some water to soothe your throat."
Xia Qianqian took the water bottle and drank her fill before realizing that Xiangyang Village was already right in front of her.
"Mother!"
Suddenly, a clear, crisp sound rang out.
Xia Qianqian looked up in the direction the sound came from and saw Er Ya waving vigorously at her.
"Er Ya!" Xia Qianqian called out to her.
I really miss these two children after not seeing them for several days.
When Er Ya saw Xia Qianqian's gaze fall on her, her eyes instantly lit up like stars in the night sky. She cupped her hands around her mouth and shouted in her childish voice, "Mommy, we've prepared a gift for you!"
After saying that, she took off running towards home, her two little braids bouncing happily behind her head, her little bottom jiggling as she looked incredibly cute.
Xia Qianqian watched Er Ya's departing figure and smiled unconsciously. Ever since the child started calling her "Mom," she had become more and more well-behaved and adorable, and every little gesture of hers could easily touch her heart.
At this moment, she wished she could immediately hold Er Ya tightly in her arms and kiss her rosy little face.
Suddenly, she slapped her forehead, regretting that she had forgotten to buy gifts for the children during her hasty trip to the provincial capital.
What should we do?
Xia Qianqian's eyes darted around, and she made up an excuse to go to the toilet, hurrying towards her neighbor's outhouse.
Upon entering the outhouse and confirming that no one was around, Xia Qianqian had a thought and instantly appeared in Peach Blossom Spring.
She sensed that something had changed in Peach Blossom Spring, but she didn't have time to look closely. She grabbed some fruit gummies and left Peach Blossom Spring.
"Let's go." Xia Qianqian hid the gummy candy and walked to Lu Zheng's side.
As the two walked toward the courtyard, before they could even step through the gate, Lu's mother led Da Ya and Er Ya out quickly.
Er Ya, holding a beautiful wreath woven from colorful wildflowers, skipped and hopped up to Xia Qianqian: "Mom, this is a gift my sister and I prepared for you. Do you like it?"
The wreath still held the morning dew, and Xia Qianqian felt a warmth in her heart. She said softly, "I love it. It's so beautiful, thank you!"
She crouched down and gently lifted Er Ya into her arms. Er Ya happily wrapped her arms around Xia Qianqian's neck and gave her a quick kiss on the cheek.
Lu Zheng waited anxiously for a long time, but seeing that Da Ya and Er Ya's attention was entirely on Xia Qianqian and they hadn't prepared any gifts for him at all, he couldn't help but touch his nose awkwardly.
He thought to himself with a bit of amusement: Lu Zheng, you're really becoming more and more pathetic, even jealous of the kids!
