Lan Yao was asleep in the middle of the night when she suddenly heard a series of faint noises. She woke up with a start, jumped out of bed, and pressed herself against the window, carefully observing her surroundings. She found the courtyard to be quiet.
Lan Yao was a little worried, so she opened the window and, with nimble movements, leaped out silently.
She peered along the wall and found that there was indeed no movement in the courtyard where she lived.
What's going on?
Jade Abacus: "What's wrong, Master? Did you discover something?"
Lan Yao: "No. But I just heard a rustling sound."
As soon as she finished speaking, the very faint rustling sound came again.
Lan Yao immediately became alert. She noticed that a dagger had appeared in her hand at some point. She listened carefully to the sound and realized that it was coming from next door.
Lan Yao paused for a moment, twirled the dagger twice in her hand, and then sheathed it back into her waistband.
After standing by the wall for a while to make sure the sound wouldn't threaten Grandma Yu, Lan Yao ignored it and turned back into the room.
However, unlike before, Lan Yao didn't dare to fall into a deep sleep this time.
Because all night long, she could hear rustling sounds coming from next door from time to time.
She had no idea what the other person was doing; it was so annoying and kept her from sleeping.
Lan Yao decided not to sleep anymore and began to close her eyes and cultivate the Qi cultivation method she had found from the Taoist priest, or rather, the method of cultivating spiritual energy.
As dawn approached, Lan Yao got up to prepare breakfast for Grandma Yu.
As soon as she stepped out of the house, Grandma Yu also got up. Grandma Yu was a little surprised to see her up so early: "Why are you up so early?"
Is it because you're not used to sleeping in an unfamiliar place?
Lan Yao yawned: "I always get up early at this time."
Yeah, right!
Lan Yao was afraid that Grandma would worry if she told her about what happened last night, so she just made up an excuse.
Seeing that she looked tired, Grandma Yu asked worriedly, "Didn't you sleep well last night?"
She immediately became even more nervous: "Is the bed too hard? Or is the blanket not comfortable enough?"
Lan Yao waved her hand: "None of them."
Lan Yao moved closer and whispered to Grandma Yu, "Yesterday I heard some sparse noises coming from next door. I was afraid that bad people were breaking in, so I didn't dare to sleep soundly for the rest of the night."
Grandma Yu narrowed her eyes: "What do you mean by 'next door'?"
"Judging from the sound, it must be the house where someone died yesterday."
Grandma Yu wondered, "Did someone go to his house looking for something in the middle of the night?"
Lan Yao reacted quickly and immediately understood what Grandma Yu meant.
After all, she had done this kind of thing often before.
But she pretended to be clueless: "Grandma Yu, what do you mean by that?"
Grandma Yu pulled her towards the kitchen, asking her what she wanted to eat for breakfast while explaining, "Wang Tianfu's family used to be quite wealthy capitalists. Not long ago, they all ran away, leaving only Wang Tianfu, their unloved illegitimate son."
Lan Yao casually replied, "I eat whatever's at home." Then she continued, "Oh? Doesn't someone like him have to be sent to the countryside? I heard that people like them are supposed to be sent to the countryside."
“His family probably got wind of it beforehand, and they probably had their things moved or hidden away long ago. So the group of people who rushed over after receiving the news found nothing. Wang Tianfu is not favored, and he was only recently brought back from the countryside. Even if we took him to ask him, he wouldn’t know anything.”
Lan Yao said "Oh," as if she had just realized something: "So, you mean those people didn't believe in superstitions and came looking for treasure in the middle of the night."
Grandma Yu nodded: "That should be it. I've heard it a few times before."
"No wonder Li Hao was worried."
Grandma Yu lives alone; if something happened in the middle of the night, probably no one would know.
Grandma Yu smiled, her face full of kindness.
Neither of them said anything else and went to eat breakfast.
Breakfast was simple: some porridge, steamed buns with cornmeal, and some pickled vegetables made by Grandma Yu.
Take the carrots and cowpeas out of the water, rinse them several times, roughly chop them, add a little sugar, a little soy sauce, salt, and chili powder, and mix well.
While seasoning the ingredients, Grandma Yu said regretfully, "It's a pity there's no sesame oil. It would taste even better if we added a little sesame oil."
"That's actually not bad."
Lan Yao discovered that Grandma Yu really loved cooking; she enjoyed the process, and her cooking was also very pleasing to the eye.
"I'm glad you like it."
Lan Yao: "How about Grandma Yu tries my cooking tonight?"
Grandma Yu smiled gently: "Okay."
The two were complete strangers at first, but after just one night together, they became so harmonious and got along so well, as if it were only natural for them to be mother and daughter.
Grandma Yu lowered her eyes, and a sudden obsession arose in her heart.
If she could, she would like to keep the young man with her.
Anyway, she was all alone, with no children.
Judging from this young man's appearance, he's probably just like her.
If that's the case, why, why can't she do what she wants?
"Grandma Yu, is dinner ready? Shall I put it on the table?"
Okay. Take it upstairs.
Just as Lan Yao brought the food upstairs, there was a knock on Grandma Yu's door.
Grandma Yu walked over and opened the door naturally. Standing outside were Officer Zhang and a young police officer surnamed Zhao.
Seeing this, Grandma Yu said expressionlessly, "Xiao Zhang, Xiao Zhao, what are you doing here so early in the morning?"
Officer Zhang was already used to his grandmother's indifferent attitude. He looked inside and asked, "Where's the young man that Auntie brought back yesterday?"
Lan Yao approached and, upon hearing this, asked with a smile, "Officer Zhang? Are you asking about me?"
Officer Zhang looked her up and down, then glanced at Grandma Yu. Knowing that nothing had happened to her, he felt much relieved.
Yes. I was just asking about you. How are you?
"Officer Zhang, that depends on what aspect you're asking about?"
Officer Zhang glanced at her and rolled his eyes inwardly. What kind of kid was this, always grinning and acting so irresponsibly?
"for example."
"For example, if you're talking about food and lodging, Grandma Yu's cooking is amazing, so delicious I almost wanted to swallow my tongue. As for the food, it's just passable."
Upon hearing the last sentence, Officer Zhang raised an eyebrow, seizing upon the loophole in her statement.
"Isn't the accommodation here good?"
Lan Yao exclaimed, her expression exaggerated: "Officer Zhang, you asked me this on your own initiative, it wasn't something I wanted to say."
Officer Zhang rolled his eyes and said irritably, "Stop talking nonsense and tell me what happened."
Lan Yao pouted and pointed to the next room: "I don't know what they're doing in the middle of the night. They don't sleep and they're making so much noise that I don't dare to sleep all night."
