The temperature rose sharply in the confined space.
In the darkness, the two frantically groped for each other, their clothes being stripped off piece by piece and scattered on the cold cement floor.
He Yanzhi's kisses rained down on her, spreading from her lips to her neck and collarbone, hot and wet.
Guan Wenru was pinned against the cold tiled wall by him, the sensation of ice and fire making her tremble.
He Yanzhi's burning hot palms roamed over her delicate skin, igniting clusters of flames.
...
After an unknown amount of time, Guan Wenru collapsed weakly onto his sweat-dampened chest, her body still trembling slightly. Her tightly clenched lips finally loosened, leaving deep teeth marks.
...
Early the next morning.
After He Yanzhi and Guan Wenru woke up, the family quickly washed up.
Then the couple, along with their three children, carrying a sumptuous breakfast they had taken from their space: steamed buns, fried dough sticks, soy milk, and eggs, arrived at their parents' farm.
Guan Wanxin knew they would bring breakfast, so she stopped Guan Yuanxiu from making breakfast in the morning.
After Guan Wenru set out breakfast, the family sat around the simple table to eat.
The atmosphere was subtly quiet.
Guan Yuanxiu and Qin Yue were exceptionally attentive and careful towards Guan Wanxin, while Guan Wanxin remained calm, occasionally coughing a few times.
Guan Wenru keenly sensed the unusual atmosphere between her parents and grandmother and quickly finished her food.
Guan Yuanxiu and Qin Yue still had to go to work; they had to at least finish their own tasks.
He Yanzhi and Guan Wenru wanted to help, but the two refused, forcefully telling them to stay put.
After her parents left, Guan Wenru looked at He Yanzhi and said, "Yanzhi, take Dabao, Erbao, and Xiaobao outside for a walk and see the cows and sheep on the farm. Don't go too far. I'm going to talk to Grandma for a while."
He Yanzhi nodded knowingly, "Alright, let's go, boys, let's go on an adventure with Dad!"
The triplets cheered and followed He Yanzhi out.
Guan Wenru sat down on the small stool next to her grandmother and held her grandmother's hand. "Grandma, did something happen last night? I noticed that Mom and Dad were acting a little... strange this morning."
Guan Wanxin lovingly stroked her granddaughter's hair, her face showing understanding and a hint of weariness. "Silly girl, nothing can be hidden from you. It's nothing serious, just... we talked about something trivial, and we opened up."
"What's up?"
Looking into her granddaughter's clear eyes, Guan Wanxin got straight to the point, "Your mother... mentioned the family's old ways to me last night. In her heart... she still cares more about the eldest son and Hongqi."
Guan Wenru was stunned for a moment, "Mom... she brought it up now? And we can't produce those things now."
Guan Wanxin gently patted her hand, "Your mother... is very thoughtful. You were born to her, but I raised you myself. As for your older brother, she personally raised him until he was five years old before handing him over to me."
A mother's heart is always different with her first child, the one she raised herself. Hongqi is her son, the pillar of her family, so naturally she'll think of him more. You're caught in the middle... so naturally you'll suffer some grievances.
Guan Wenru felt a pang of sadness and whispered, "Grandma, I don't feel wronged..."
Guan Wanxin interrupted her, her tone gentle, "Grandma is telling you all this so you'll have a better understanding. Once things calm down, if we can apply to get our two courtyard houses in Beijing back..."
"Grandma, I don't want those! Don't worry about it."
“Silly child! Anyway, I’ve already explained everything to them. Everything will be done as Grandma told you before. Grandma knows you’re kind-hearted and want to split things equally with them, but your older brother is honest… to put it bluntly, he’s not capable of handling family matters.”
Hongqi is a free spirit; if you put something in his hands, he won't know what to do with it, so he'll just let you handle it.
Grandma knows that if you make a fortune with those things, she will definitely not treat them unfairly. But if the things are handed over to your father or those two brothers, they are easily swayed. If they marry a selfish person, they will not think of sharing with you. They will all think that you are a woman and that you are like water spilled out.
So remember, you're in charge of handling all those things. If it really becomes a successful business later, give them some shares or something; they'll be getting a good deal out of you.
Guan Wenru's eyes instantly reddened. "Grandma! What are you doing!"
Guan Wanxin patted the back of her hand, "Grandma has to pave the way for you! Your mother's thoughts... While I'm alive, she can keep them under control. But after I'm gone, she'll definitely bring it up again, and might even make you take out your share to help the eldest son or Hongqi get married and settle down!"
Wenru, remember what Grandma said. Without you, none of those things would be safe, so Grandma is only giving them to you! It's what you deserve! No one can take it from you! Take the written agreement and follow the rules! What's rightfully yours will be yours!
Guan Wenru could no longer hold back her tears, which welled up in her eyes. She rushed into her grandmother's arms, hugging the old woman's frail body tightly, her voice choked with sobs:
"Grandma...Grandma...I don't want the yard...I don't want anything...I just want you to be well...Please don't go...Please don't leave me..."
She nestled in her grandmother's arms, her shoulders trembling slightly.
At that moment, she realized with absolute clarity that the old man in front of her, who unconditionally doted on her, loved her, and gave her all his affection, was the most solid support in her life.
Once Grandma is gone, the person who gave her all her love and affection will truly be gone.
Her mother loved her too, but that love was mixed with too many other things, even with a "limitation" that she couldn't change and that was ingrained in her bones.
Only her grandmother gave her unconditional, complete, and profound love.
......
When He Yanzhi brought the three children back, he saw that Guan Wenru's eyes were red. He felt sorry for her and immediately pulled her aside to comfort her.
