Inside the dilapidated mud house, Guan Wenru was dressed in Grandma Wang's coarse cloth clothes. Not long after, she finally slowly opened her eyes.
Although she looked haggard, her eyes were bright.
Grandma Wang was overjoyed. "My dear girl, you...you're finally awake!"
Guan Wenru raised her hand and rubbed her temples. "Grandpa, did you save me?"
"Yes, yes, I pulled you and your child up. Thank goodness, thank goodness you're still alive! Thank God!"
Just then, Dazhu, who was lying next to Guan Wenru, also woke up.
When she woke up, she called for her mother, "Mother...Mother."
Grandma Wang quickly pressed him down, saying, "Your mother is here, she's here!"
Guan Wenru's eyes darkened, and she sat up. She touched Dazhu's forehead; it was a little hot.
She also felt hot all over; she must have caught a chill and developed a fever.
Looking at the bewildered Dazhu, she said softly, "Your mother went home first. In a few days, Auntie will take you back to find her, okay?"
Upon hearing this, Grandma Wang was taken aback and looked at Guan Wenru.
Guan Wenru didn't explain immediately. Instead, she got out of bed and asked, "Grandpa, how should I address you?"
"Everyone calls me Grandma Wang. If you don't mind, you can call me that too, my dear."
Guan Wenru nodded, "Grandma Wang, my child and I will never forget your life-saving grace."
Grandma Wang quickly waved her hand, "Girl, it's all fate, don't say that."
"Grandma Wang, may I use your kitchen to boil some water?"
"Of course! I'll cook it for you. Daughter, you just woke up, you should rest well."
Guan Wenru shook her head, "I can do it myself."
Grandma Wang couldn't persuade her otherwise, and finally let her into the kitchen.
While Grandma Wang went to get firewood, Guan Wenru gave herself and Dazhu some cold medicine.
Then she secretly took out some money, a lot of good rice, and beef jerky from her spatial storage and put them in Grandma Wang's small room.
Grandma Wang should be able to find out after she leaves.
Grandma Wang made corn porridge for Guan Wenru and Dazhu.
After finishing their meal, Guan Wenru squeezed Grandma Wang's withered hand. "Grandma Wang, I'd like to ask you to take me to see the head of your production brigade. I need to explain my identity. My husband is a soldier, and the army and our family are definitely looking for us everywhere! I need to contact them as soon as possible!"
Grandma Wang hesitated, her face full of worry, "We don't have any kind of brigade leader here, the one in charge of us is the clan chief. Sigh... Our place is very remote, and you're an outsider... and a woman too, what if the people in the clan see you..."
Upon hearing this, Guan Wenru's heart skipped a beat.
She knew that there were many remote places deep in the mountains where women, once they entered, could never leave.
Could this place be...?
The thought of a certain possibility sent chills down Guan Wenru's spine.
But after she went out and looked around, she realized that she couldn't get out on her own.
What's more, she also has to take care of a young child.
After thinking it over, Guan Wenru still insisted that Grandma Wang take her to see the so-called clan chief.
...
Fifteen minutes later, Grandma Wang led Guan Wenru and Dazhu to the clan chief's simple hall.
The clan chief was a thin, old man who puffed on a pipe and had cloudy eyes.
There were other people in the hall at that time.
It was Zhao Laosi, a burly man with a face full of scars and an open chest, sitting casually to the side, his eyes fixed on Guan Wenru like hooks.
Guan Wenru straightened her back. "Hello, clan chief. My name is Guan Wenru, and I am the wife of Regiment Commander He Yanzhi from a certain military region! This is my work ID!"
She produced a soaked but barely legible ID.
“I saved this child. We were swept away by the flood, and we were rescued by Grandma Wang. I would like to ask the clan chief to do me a favor and help me contact the nearest commune or army unit to inform my husband. He must be looking for us!”
The clan chief squinted, not taking the identification, and slowly exhaled smoke. "Commander He? The military? I've never heard of him. Talk is cheap... In this chaotic world, washed down by floods... who knows if it's true? Besides, this work ID of yours... you might have found it..."
Guan Wenru: "..."
Suddenly, Zhao Laosi sneered, stood up, and circled around Guan Wenru, his gaze arrogant:
"That's right! Our chieftain is right! You were swept down by the flood, who knows where you came from? Dressed in rags, with a wild child in tow... I think you're just a refugee! Maybe..."
He lowered his voice, a malicious laugh in his eyes, "Your backgrounds are problematic! You're bad elements hiding from disaster!"
"!" Guan Wenru's face darkened, and he said sternly, "Comrade, don't talk nonsense! I am an innocent military dependent! I am the director of the feed processing plant! You can investigate!"
Zhao Laosi took a step closer, reeking of alcohol, "Investigate? Where do you investigate? In this remote mountain village, I am the law! Clan chief! This unclaimed woman, according to our village rules, should be dealt with by the village!"
I think she's quite pretty and has a good figure; she'd be perfect as a foot warmer for my fourth son! It's better than starving to death with that old hag Wang!"
He grinned lewdly and reached out to touch Guan Wenru's face.
Guan Wenru abruptly stepped back, shielding Dazhu, her eyes sharp as knives. "You dare! I am the wife of an active-duty soldier! If you dare to lay a finger on me, you are breaking up a military marriage! It's a crime! The military won't forgive you! The law won't let you off the hook!"
The clan chief coughed, his eyes darting between Zhao Laosi's arrogance and Guan Wenru's toughness, and mumbled, "Laosi, don't... don't do it. Comrade Guan, don't get agitated either. This matter... this matter needs to be discussed again... discussed again... Granny Wang, you take your people back first!"
Grandma Wang breathed a sigh of relief and quickly pulled Guan Wenru and Dazhu away.
...
When they got home, Grandma Wang cried, "Daughter... what are we going to do? That Zhao Laosi is a bully in the village, even the clan chief is afraid of him. He's got his eye on you, he won't let this go!"
