When they got home, Guan Wenru told He Yanzhi to take a shower, as he hadn't had a proper bath in several days.
He Yanzhi not only took a bath himself, but also gave the triplets a bath.
The kitchen door was ajar, and Guan Wenru was picking vegetables when Bai Yun leaned over and lowered her voice.
"Sister, I have something to tell you."
"Hmm?" Guan Wenru looked up at her.
“While you were gone, my brother-in-law…” Bai Yun glanced towards the door and heard children laughing and playing coming from the bathroom:
“He barely slept, searching day and night. Every night he would come back to check on the children to make sure they were alright. He didn’t even have time to eat; he would just put the children to sleep and then leave.”
Guan Wenru slowed down her movements.
"I heard from Sister Chunlan that when he came back that night and didn't see you, he thought something might have happened to you. He turned pale and immediately organized soldiers to search for you."
Bai Yun sighed, "I've never seen a brother-in-law like that in my life. These days, his eyes are bloodshot, and he's like a madman, afraid that he won't be able to find you."
“He…” Guan Wenru’s throat moved, but she couldn’t say anything.
"You can imagine how much he cares about you." Baiyun patted her arm. "Now that you're back safe and sound, he can finally relax."
Guan Wenru lowered her head, gently pinching the vegetable leaf with her fingertips, and slowly raised the corners of her mouth upwards.
Just then, He Yanzhi's voice came from the bathroom, "Xiao Bao, don't splash water on your brother!"
Xiao Bao seemed disobedient and splashed water again.
He Yanzhi immediately instructed Da Bao and Er Bao to fight back.
A short while later, Xiao Bao's voice pleading for mercy could be heard from the bathroom.
Guan Wenru raised her head and looked towards the bathroom, her eyes sparkling.
fine!
Thankfully, she's still alive!
Otherwise, He Yanzhi and his three children would be heartbroken for who knows how long!
...
After the family finished dinner, Baiyun wanted to put the triplets to bed, but the triplets refused.
They just wanted to stick to Guan Wenru.
Guan Wenru also missed them, so she told Baiyun to go to sleep first.
Baiyun hasn't had a good rest these days, and her face is covered in dark circles.
He Yanzhi carried the triplets into their bedroom.
The light cord was pulled twice, and the room lit up.
The triplets squeezed onto the edge of the bed, with the eldest tugging at Guan Wenru's clothes and looking up at her with his little face.
"Mom, we'll sleep with you and Dad tonight."
He Yanzhi narrowed his eyes and took three plush toys from the cabinet.
These dolls were sewn from scraps of cloth when my grandmother was still alive.
He handed it to the triplets, saying, "Take this and go back to your little beds. Tomorrow I'll carve wooden swords for you, longer than the last one."
If it had been a few days ago, the triplets probably would have agreed.
But they hadn't seen their mother for several days, so of course they refused.
Xiao Bao pushed the doll aside, his eyes a little red, "No! We'll sleep with Mom. I'll be scared if I wake up tomorrow morning and can't see Mom."
Erbao didn't say anything, but just snuggled into Guan Wenru's arms, wrapping his little arms around her waist like a little kitten.
He Yanzhi squatted down and pinched Xiaobao's cheek. "Daddy's here, your mom can't run away. Besides, if the three of you squeeze in here, Daddy and Mommy won't have anywhere to lie down."
“Let’s sleep curled up!” Da Bao immediately said, and even demonstrated how to curl up into a ball.
Actually, this kang (heated brick bed) is quite big!
Guan Wenru couldn't help but chuckle as she looked at He Yanzhi's helpless expression.
She knew perfectly well how much he had been holding back these past few days, hoping that once the children were asleep, he could have a proper talk with her.
Seeing Guan Wenru laugh out loud, He Yanzhi straightened up, moved closer to her, and his lips were almost touching her ear. "It's funny, isn't it? Wait until these three little ones are asleep, and see how I deal with you."
The hot breath on his earlobe made Guan Wenru's face turn red instantly, and she quietly reached out and pinched his arm.
"Alright, alright," she turned to the triplets and patted the edge of the bed. "Lie down and sleep properly, but it's a deal: no kicking off the covers at night, understand?"
The three children immediately cheered and crawled to her side. The eldest child took the left side, the second child squeezed into the middle, and the youngest child curled up next to Guan Wenru's legs.
Guan Wenru and He Yanzhi exchanged a glance, and the couple felt satisfied.
Guan Wenru took a storybook and told stories to the triplets.
He Yanzhi gently scratched their backs.
These past few days, the triplets have been unable to sleep or eat properly, overwhelmed by various fears.
Now that Guan Wenru is back, their worries have finally been put to rest.
Soon after, the triplets stopped moving and fell into a deep sleep.
He Yanzhi raised an eyebrow at Guan Wenru, a hint of a smile in his eyes, and reached out to tuck the blankets around the children.
Guan Wenru looked at the three children with heartache and suddenly said, "Let them sleep here. They've been terrified these past few days."
He Yanzhi narrowed his eyes. "I'll bring them back later."
Guan Wenru: "..."
Her face turned bright red instantly.
He Yanzhi whispered in her ear, "You just comforted them. I've been terrified these past few days. Shouldn't you comfort me too? Comrade Guan Wenru, you can't show favoritism."
Guan Wenru: "..."
What else could she say? She simply pretended to be angry and nudged He Yanzhi's shoulder.
He Yanzhi gently carried the three children to the next room, tucked them in, and then went back to his own room.
He moved quickly and locked the door with a "click".
He turned around and, before Guan Wenru could speak, strode over, pulled her into his arms, and leaned down to kiss her.
Guan Wenru was about to speak when he silenced her with a kiss.
His kiss was urgent and deep, with a fierce intensity of something lost and regained, from the forehead to the tip of the nose, and then to the lips, little by little, as if he wanted to knead all the longing of the past few days into this kiss.
“In short…” Guan Wenru’s voice was muffled by his mouth.
He didn't answer, but instead led her onto the kang (a heated brick bed). The two of them fell down together, and he pressed down on her, his arms tightly wrapped around her waist, as if he wanted to embed her into his own bones and blood.
The kiss continued, its irresistible heat spreading from between their lips and teeth, lingering and tender, making it impossible to tell whose breath had become out of sync.
The wind outside swept across the eaves, leaving only the mingled scents and suppressed murmurs inside.
...
The next morning, when Guan Wenru woke up, the triplets were sitting on the kang (a heated brick bed), looking at her expectantly.
Guan Wenru chuckled helplessly, sat up, and reached out to rub their heads. "When did you wake up? Where's Dad?"
Xiao Bao clung to her side, saying, "Daddy's gone to work."
Baiyun walked in at this moment. "Sister, you're awake. Brother-in-law made breakfast. Get up and have some breakfast first. The three kids insist on waiting for you to eat together."
"OK."
Guan Wenru quickly got up and washed up.
When everyone sat down to eat, Baiyun had just picked up a fried egg, but before she could even eat it, she suddenly frowned and couldn't help but gag.
Guan Wenru: "!!!"
Her expression changed slightly. Could it be that Bai Yun...?
