As the afternoon workday was drawing to a close, Guan Wenru walked to the door of the finance office.
Bai Yun was looking down at the accounts when she heard footsteps. She looked up and her face immediately lit up with surprise.
"Sis! You're back! When did you arrive?"
Guan Wenru walked in with a smile, "I just arrived a short while ago. Last night you said on the phone that Xi Mufan was leaving today? What time is his train?"
Bai Yun nodded, a hint of reluctance on her face. "Yes, the bus went back to the capital early this morning. Sister, did the meeting in the provincial capital go smoothly?"
Guan Wenru: "It's going very smoothly. I've already contacted the textile factory in the capital, and they should be able to give me a definite answer in the next couple of days. Your return to the city should be fine."
Bai Yun breathed a sigh of relief. "Thank you, sister."
"Don't be so polite with me!" Guan Wenru glanced at her watch. "Let's go, it's time to get off work, let's go home together."
"good!"
After the two sisters packed their things, Guan Wenru drove the jeep back to the military region.
The two returned the car to the camp first, and then walked back to Compound No. 1.
As soon as they entered the courtyard, the three small figures suddenly looked up. Upon seeing Guan Wenru, they jumped up and rushed over like little cannonballs.
Guan Wenru squatted down with a smile and hugged them.
The triplets cried out in unison, their voices trembling with tears, "Mommy! Mommy, you're back!"
Guan Wenru looked down and saw her three sons looking up at her with their little faces red, like little rabbits.
Her heart softened instantly, and she patted each of their little heads. "Oh, Mommy's back! Look what's wrong? Your eyes are all red. Did you miss Mommy?"
The triplets nodded vigorously, almost in unison, "Yes! We want to!"
Guan Wenru smiled and pinched their noses, "Don't cry, you're all little men now. In the days your mother was away, did you listen to your aunt, uncle, and Aunt Zeng? Were you naughty? Did you study hard?"
He Yi puffed out his chest and said, "I'm very well-behaved! I got A's on all my homework!"
He Qi raised an eyebrow, a hint of arrogance in his voice, "I'm always the first to finish my homework."
When homework was mentioned, He Sheng's expression became somewhat unnatural, after all, he had just been criticized by his teacher that morning for not taking his homework seriously.
So he didn't dare to speak.
Guan Wenru guessed what was wrong as soon as she saw him like this, and pinched his cheek with a smile, "Mom will check your homework carefully tonight."
He Sheng slumped his shoulders. "Mom, no, please. You're so tired. I'll give you a shoulder massage tonight."
Guan Wenru was amused by him, feeling a warm glow in her heart. "Alright, then let's check again tomorrow night."
He Sheng: "..."
Just then, Zeng Chunlan and the other military dependents also gathered around with smiles on their faces.
As soon as Zeng Chunlan walked in, she patted He Sheng's head and asked, "Xiao Guan, was your trip to the provincial capital for the meeting smooth? Did you run into any trouble?"
Mei Dandan had just returned from get off work. Thinking about the provincial newspapers she had been reading these past few days, she frowned. "Yes, I've been very worried! I heard that the disaster is severe in many places outside, and the roads are not safe?"
Guan Wenru pushed the children into the yard, saying, "You go and play first."
After the triplets went back to play with their friends, she nodded solemnly, "My journey was smooth, but the situation outside was indeed not good."
After such a long drought, followed by floods, many counties and townships have suffered complete crop failure. The people have gone without food, not just for a day or two, but for months! When people are desperate for food, what won't they do?
Hua Xiaoyu, who had just pushed her bicycle into the yard, immediately chimed in, her tone still tinged with fear, "That's right! Xiao Guan is absolutely right! Our feed processing plant hasn't been peaceful these past few nights, with starving disaster victims constantly trying to climb over the wall to steal our food!"
Fortunately, the security guards were on high alert and prevented anyone from actually breaking in! If they had, the consequences would have been unimaginable!
"Good heavens!" Zeng Chunlan gasped. "They dared to steal from the factory? They're incredibly audacious!"
Mei Dandan's expression was solemn. "They knew the security department had guns, yet they still dared to break in. They must be starving and desperate to die."
Guan Wenru nodded, "So, sisters-in-law, during this time, unless it's something urgent, please don't leave the compound casually, and especially don't go far away."
If you're missing anything at home, try to make do with what you have, or wait for the military to make unified purchases.
There are too many people outside who are envious of our abundance of food and drink here. Safety first!
"Once we get through these next few months, the new harvest might be able to begin, and things will gradually improve."
Zeng Chunlan nodded repeatedly, "Yes, yes, yes! Xiao Guan is right! Let's try to stay in the compound as much as possible. If we need anything at home, let us know so we can look after each other!"
Mei Dandan nodded, "Yes, safety comes first!"
After chatting with the military families for a while, Guan Wenru and Bai Yun went home.
Guan Wenru had been gone for several days, and after dinner, the triplets clung to her and refused to go play with Maowa and the others.
After chatting with Guan Wenru until they were tired, the three of them slept on the kang (a heated brick bed) in Guan Wenru's room.
......
The next morning, just as dawn was breaking, Guan Wenru was awakened by a slight noise outside.
Her heart skipped a beat, and she sat up abruptly, threw on her clothes, and rushed out.
As soon as the door opened, He Yanzhi was seen standing in the doorway, his face unnaturally pale.
The military jacket was casually draped over his shoulders.
Guan Wenru's gaze instantly locked onto his slightly stiff left shoulder and unnatural posture, and her eyes immediately reddened.
Her voice trembled as she rushed to his side, reaching out to touch him but hesitating. "He Yanzhi! You...you're back? Where are you hurt?! Why do you look so pale!"
He Yanzhi forced a smile and gently shielded his face with his right hand. "It's alright, honey, don't panic! It's just a minor injury, nothing serious, it'll be fine in a couple of days."
