He Yanzhi didn't move away; instead, he gently sucked on her lower lip, his voice lower than usual, carrying an undeniable magnetism:
"Don't worry, when I was putting them to sleep, I blew out all the small lights. He Sheng started snoring as soon as his head hit the pillow, and He Yi and He Qi didn't make a sound either; they were already fast asleep."
His hand moved up along Guan Wenru's waist, and through the thin polyester shirt, he could clearly feel the curve of Guan Wenru's back.
Guan Wenru stiffened, quickly grabbing his wrist and pulling it back, her brows furrowing slightly. "No, I'm still worried. Go check next door and make sure they're covered up properly before you..."
"Confirm what?" He Yanzhi chuckled and pecked her nose, his other hand reaching behind her to tug at the hem of her shirt. "Before I left, I made sure to tuck their thin blankets under their chins. He Qi gets hot easily, so I even lifted a corner of the blanket for him. Everything's perfectly covered. Besides..."
He leaned close to Guan Wenru's ear, his breath making her earlobe burn, "When I came into this room just now, I locked the door from the inside, just in case those three little rascals suddenly barged in and ruined our plans."
Guan Wenru's cheeks instantly flushed. She reached out and pushed his shoulder, but not with much force. "Why are you still locking the door? What if the children really wake up and no one answers the door? They'll panic."
"Don't panic," He Yanzhi's lips pressed against mine again, this time the kiss was deeper than before, and his hands didn't stop either, slipping half an inch inside the seam of my shirt, "If they're really awake, they'll knock on the door, I can hear them, right now... can you take care of me first?"
Guan Wenru's breathing became erratic from his kisses, but she remained on edge.
She abruptly turned her head away, grabbed his hand, and pulled him outside. "No, we have to go see him. Otherwise, I won't feel at ease. Have you forgotten last time? He Sheng kicked off the covers in the middle of the night and started coughing the next day. We can't be careless this time."
He Yanzhi looked at the seriousness in her eyes and knew that she really couldn't let go of her child, so he sighed helplessly.
He gently bit her lip, the pressure light, more like a playful complaint, "You only have eyes for those three brats."
Despite his complaints, he propped himself up on his arms, grabbed the military jacket draped over the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed) and put it on his shoulders. He then reached out to straighten Guan Wenru's slightly disheveled collar, his fingertips brushing against her reddened earlobe.
"Wait for me, I'll be right back. Don't fall asleep while I'm gone."
Guan Wenru smiled, pursing her lips, and gave him a push, "Go and come back quickly, don't linger too long at the children's door and startle them."
"I understand." He Yanzhi quietly got off the kang (a heated brick bed).
As he reached the door, he glanced back at Guan Wenru and saw her leaning against the kang (a heated brick bed) with a smile in her eyes. He couldn't help but curl the corners of his lips into a smile as well.
Then he gently opened the door and slipped out.
The moment the door closed, Guan Wenru reached out and touched her burning cheeks, the warmth of He Yanzhi's breath still lingering on her earlobe.
But as soon as he left, she felt sleepy and quickly lay down.
