He Yanzhi went to the room where He Yi and He Sheng lived first. He didn't push the door open directly, but listened to it by pressing his ear against the door panel.
The room was quiet.
When the door was opened, moonlight streamed in through the window and shone directly onto the kang (a heated brick bed).
He Yanzhi squinted at it and immediately smiled helplessly.
He Yi lay on his back with one arm stretched out over the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed), a thin blanket rolled around his waist, revealing half of his belly.
He Sheng was even more outrageous, lying on his side with his feet on He Yi's legs, the quilt having been kicked to the corner of the kang (heated brick bed) like a crumpled ball of cotton.
These two rascals, they still can't sleep properly!
He Yanzhi walked quietly to the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed), first bending down to move He Sheng's feet off the bed, then picking up the quilt from the corner of the kang, gently unfolding it, and covering him from his shoulders to his ankles. He even tucked the corner of the quilt under He Sheng's chin.
This child kicks off the blankets with great force; if we don't tuck them in tightly, they'll definitely be exposed again in the middle of the night.
After covering He Sheng with the blanket, he turned to He Yi and gently put the arm that was hanging over the edge of the bed back under the blanket. His fingertips touched the child's warm, soft skin.
He Yanzhi couldn't help but lower his head and kiss He Yi's smooth forehead, and then kiss He Sheng's forehead.
As he turned to leave, he glanced back and saw that both children were bundled up tightly before he felt relieved and left the room. He quietly closed the door and headed towards He Qi's room.
He Qi's room was quieter than the one next door. He Yanzhi pushed open the door and went in. By the moonlight, he felt a sense of relief.
The child lay obediently on his side, a thin blanket covering him from shoulder to toe, with not even a corner of the blanket showing. His little hand was still clutching half of a comic book by the pillow, clearly indicating that he had fallen asleep while reading.
He Yanzhi walked to the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed), reached out and gently pulled out the comic book, placed it on the small table at the head of the kang, and then tidied up the stray hairs on He Qi's forehead.
Seeing the little shadow cast by the child's eyelashes under his eyes, he couldn't help but bend down and kiss He Qi's face, his fingertips rubbing against the child's soft cheeks.
But just then, He Qi's eyelashes suddenly trembled, and then he slowly opened his eyes.
The child had just woken up, his eyes still misty with tears, and looked at He Yanzhi groggily, his voice soft and sweet from just waking up, "Daddy... what's wrong? Is it dawn yet?"
"No, it's still early."
He Yanzhi quickly squatted down, gently patted He Qi's head with his palm, his fingertips sliding down the child's hair, and said in an exceptionally gentle tone, "Daddy just came to check on you and see if you're covered up properly with the blanket."
He Qi rubbed his eyes, shook his head, and rubbed his little head against the pillow, his voice even softer, "Daddy, why aren't you asleep yet? Where's Mommy?"
"Mom is waiting for Dad inside."
He Yanzhi smiled and, seeing that the child was no longer sleepy, simply sat on the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed) and pulled He Qi closer to him. "Do you want Daddy to tell you a story? You can go back to sleep after I tell you, okay?"
He Qi's eyes lit up, and she immediately nodded. She even moved closer to He Yanzhi, obediently turning to the side and grabbing He Yanzhi's clothes with her little hands. "Okay! Tell me about the Three Kingdoms. Last time, we talked about Uncle Zhao Yun saving A Dou..."
"Alright, let's tell the story of Zhao Yun rescuing A Dou."
He Yanzhi cleared his throat, lowered his voice, and slowly began, "Last time we talked about how Cao Cao's army surrounded Liu Bei at Changban Slope. Uncle Zhao Yun, carrying A Dou in his arms and wielding a long spear, fought his way through... Those soldiers couldn't stop him at all. He sent them flying with a single spear thrust and even stole Cao Cao's Qinggang Sword..."
He spoke slowly, pausing from time to time to check He Qi's reaction.
But just as the story got to the part where Zhao Yun "charged to Dangyang Bridge and saw Uncle Zhang Fei waiting on the bridge," He Qi's eyelashes slowly drooped, his breathing became steady, and his little head leaned against He Yanzhi's arm.
It's obvious that it's fallen into a deep sleep again.
He Yanzhi chuckled softly, reached out and gently placed He Qi's little head back on the pillow, then tucked the blanket around him.
He only slowly stood up after confirming that the child was sleeping soundly.
......
When He Yanzhi pushed open the door to his room, he was stunned as soon as he stepped inside.
Guan Wenru huddled under the covers, her long hair spread out on the pillow, her breathing shallow.
She was already asleep!
He walked over quietly, both angry and amused.
After hesitating for a moment, he leaned down, gently wrapped his hand around her waist, and brushed his fingertips against the soft fabric of her waist.
Seeing that she was still asleep, he simply lowered his head, his lips first touching her forehead, then slowly moving down to gently suck on her lower lip.
"Hmm..."
Guan Wenru's eyelashes fluttered, and she slowly opened her eyes, her gaze still veiled with sleepiness. She reached out and nudged his shoulder, her voice hoarse as if wrapped in cotton, "Don't bother me... I just fell asleep..."
"You forgot about me as soon as you fell asleep?"
He Yanzhi didn't move away; instead, he intensified his kiss, gently prying open her lips with his tongue. His hand also moved up her waist, and through the thin shirt, he could clearly feel the heat of her body.
Guan Wenru's body stiffened for a moment, then slowly softened. Her hands, which had been pushing him away, gently hooked around his neck, and her breathing became erratic.
In the heat of their kiss, He Yanzhi suddenly stopped, pressing his forehead against hers, his voice slightly hoarse, "Wenru... have you ever blamed me all these years?"
Guan Wenru was taken aback, and his drowsiness instantly dissipated, his eyes clearing up.
Looking at the seriousness, even a hint of disappointment, in He Yanzhi's eyes, she couldn't help but reach out and touch his cheek. "Why...why are you suddenly bringing this up? Why are you bringing this up out of the blue?"
He Yanzhi's lips landed on her neck, kissing her lightly and slowly, his voice broken, "Just now, when I was watching the children sleep, I suddenly thought of... Years ago, when I was on the front lines, you were raising three children all by yourself, managing the factory, and dealing with things at home... I didn't help at all, and instead, I made you worry so much."
