Time seemed to stand still, each second feeling like an eternity.
Three hours later, they still haven't come out!
He Yanzhi stood like a stone statue at the entrance of the emergency room, his gaze fixed on the scorching red light.
Ning Yuanfang also came.
He, Lei Yongkang, and Wan Tao stood silently by his side; the air was so heavy it seemed you could wring water out of it.
Suddenly, the 'Operation in Progress' light went out.
The slight clicking sound was like a thunderclap in the quiet corridor.
He Yanzhi's body jolted violently, and he almost stumbled to the door.
Ning Yuanfang, Lei Yongkang, and Wan Tao immediately stood up straight, looking tense.
The door was pushed open from the inside, and the surgeon walked out looking exhausted, taking off his mask.
He Yanzhi's heart was pounding in his throat. He wanted to ask, but found himself too nervous to make a sound. He could only stare at the doctor with his bloodshot eyes.
The doctor looked at the blood-soaked, tense officer before him, nodded understandingly, his tone tinged with post-operative exhaustion, but mostly with reassurance:
"Commander He, don't worry, the surgery was a success. The knife wound on his back didn't hit any vital organs, but he lost too much blood and suffered a violent impact, so he needs to rest well. He's out of danger now."
With a whoosh, He Yanzhi felt an indescribable sense of relief rush to his head, making his vision go black and almost causing him to lose his balance.
He quickly reached out and grabbed the wall to keep from falling.
"Thank you! Thank you so much, doctor! I'm so grateful!"
Ning Yuanfang, Lei Yongkang, and Wan Tao all breathed a sigh of relief and quickly thanked the doctor on behalf of He Yanzhi, who was almost speechless.
The three of them finally showed expressions of relief.
"That's great...that's great..." He Yanzhi murmured to himself, his voice choked with emotion, and his tense shoulders finally collapsed.
At this moment, the nurses wheeled Guan Wenru out.
Her face was as pale as paper, her eyes were tightly closed, her long eyelashes cast faint shadows under her eyelids, an oxygen tube was inserted into her nose, and an IV drip was attached to the back of her hand. She looked so fragile that she seemed like she would break at the slightest touch.
“Wenru…” He Yanzhi’s heart clenched again. He subconsciously wanted to reach out and touch her, but he was afraid of hurting her. His fingers trembled in the air.
In the end, he simply brushed the edge of the gurney carefully and, together with the nurses, escorted her to the intensive care unit.
Before long, Hua Xiaoyu and Mei Dandan also quickly led the children over.
Seeing Guan Wenru's appearance, Hua Xiaoyu's tears fell again, but she quickly wiped them away and forced herself to cheer up.
He Yanzhi knelt down and explained to the children who were still crying that their mother was alright.
After calming the child down, Hua Xiaoyu stepped forward without him having to say a word. "Commander He, Wenru needs to rest now. You just need to take good care of her these days. Leave the children to me and Sister-in-law Dandan. Don't worry! We'll take good care of them and make sure they're neither hungry nor cold!"
Mei Dandan nodded quickly, "Yes! Xiao He, you can rest assured! The children will come home with us and eat and sleep with our son, absolutely no problem! You can focus on taking care of your wife!"
The triplets looked at their mother and wanted to cry again, but they tried their best to hold it in.
Before they came, the older women had already told them that if they wanted their mother to recover well, they shouldn't come and disturb her.
So they had to go back to the compound with the older women.
He Yi looked up with her little face upturned, her voice trembling with tears, and said, "Daddy, you take care of Mommy. We'll go with the aunties. We'll be good. We'll wait at home for you to bring Mommy back."
Looking at the two warm-hearted military families and then at the sensible child who was so endearing, He Yanzhi was filled with mixed emotions.
He took a deep breath, nodded solemnly to Hua Xiaoyu and Mei Dandan, and said in a hoarse voice, "Sisters-in-law, I can't thank you enough! I'm entrusting the child to you!"
He knew in his heart that it was precisely because Guan Wenru was sincere and helpful in his daily life that he was able to win everyone's heartfelt sincerity at this moment.
"What are you saying! A close neighbor is worse than a distant relative. We are all revolutionary comrades, so it's only right that we help each other out!" Hua Xiaoyu waved her hand and pulled the children along. "Come on, kids, let Dad stay with Mom in peace."
The children walked away, turning back every few steps.
After seeing off Hua Xiaoyu, Mei Dandan, and the children, the corridor became quiet for a while.
Wan Tao stepped forward and patted He Yanzhi on the shoulder forcefully. "Old He, I'll take care of everything in the troupe. Don't worry about anything. Just focus on taking good care of your younger siblings! If you need anything, just let the communications officer tell me!"
Lei Yongkang and Ning Yuanfang also stepped forward.
Lei Yongkang said, "Commander He, with Director Ning and me here, there will be absolutely no problems at the factory! The workers are all united and hoping that Director Guan will recover soon! Just tell Director Guan that the factory belongs to everyone and is her support, so she must focus on recovering!"
Ning Yuanfang nodded solemnly, "Commander He, Director Guan was injured while protecting the children. She is the pride of our factory! We will handle all matters in the factory well, so please rest assured!"
Looking at his comrades and colleagues, He Yanzhi felt a surge of warmth in his heart.
He looked at them one by one and nodded heavily, "Old Wan, Old Lei, Director Ning... Thank you! Thank you all!"
The three waved and quickly left.
They all knew that they couldn't stay and cause trouble at this time.
...
When the visiting hours were allowed, He Yanzhi entered the intensive care unit almost impatiently but also cautiously.
The room was quiet, with only the regular ticking sound of the monitoring equipment.
Guan Wenru remained lying quietly, her breathing weak but even.
He Yanzhi walked gently to the bedside and sat down slowly, afraid of disturbing her.
He stared at her bloodless face, recalling her usual cheerful and decisive manner, and compared it with her current fragility and quietness, his heart ached.
He carefully reached out and gently took her hand in his. The cold touch made his heart ache again.
He pressed her hand against his cheek, trying to warm her with his body heat.
He leaned down, his eyes bloodshot, and through the thick white gauze mask, pressed a kiss of relief, as if he had just escaped a disaster, onto her cool forehead.
His voice was low and hoarse, filled with endless exhaustion and lingering fear, as he whispered in her ear, his voice choked with emotion:
"Wenru...it's alright now...it's all over..."
"You scared me to death... really..."
"Please wake up soon, okay? My children and I can't live without you..."
"This family can't live without you..."
His whispers, like the most devout prayers, gently echoed in the quiet ward, enveloping the unconscious person in bed and supporting his own nearly broken spirit.
He held her hand tightly, as if to transfer his strength and life to her, waiting for her to awaken.
