Stalls selling fried dough sticks, soy milk, fried dough rings, tofu pudding, and steamed buns were packed together, creating a lively and bustling atmosphere.
There are now quite a few vendors, and they are no longer afraid of being arrested.
Looking at the dazzling array of breakfast options, Guan Hongqi thought of his three nephews who were growing taller and taller, and whose appetites were no joke.
He waved his hand dismissively and began the purchasing:
"Grandma, ten fried dough sticks, please!"
"Uncle, ten meat buns, please! And five red bean buns, please!"
"Five bowls of soy milk, with extra sugar in each bowl!"
"Three bowls of tofu pudding, with plenty of cilantro and chili oil!"
"And a small bag of fried dough rings too!"
Seeing his eagerness to empty the entire stall, Lin Wei watched from the side, her lips slightly pursed, a barely perceptible hint of heartache flashing in her eyes.
How much money and food stamps would that cost...?
She hesitated for a moment, and while Guan Hongqi was looking down to take out money and food coupons, she gently tugged at his sleeve.
Her voice was low and hesitant, "Hongqi... when you left... did your sister... give you money and tickets?"
She thought that Guan Wenru must have given him money in advance to buy breakfast for so many people so early in the morning.
Guan Hongqi was happily pulling out a handful of change and national grain coupons from his pocket when he heard this. He paused for a moment, then laughed nonchalantly, "How much does it cost to buy these things? Do I need my sister to pay for them? I have my own allowance!"
He counted out the corresponding amount of money and tickets, handed them to the stall owner decisively, and showed no sign of reluctance.
The woman selling breakfast took the money, looked at Guan Hongqi's straightforward manner and his military uniform, then glanced at the pretty Lin Wei beside him, and couldn't help but smile and strike up a conversation:
"Wow, PLA comrades are really generous! Are you out buying breakfast with your partner? Your partner is so pretty! You two are a perfect match!"
Guan Hongqi was a little embarrassed by the old lady's praise, but more than that, he was proud. He chuckled and put the packed breakfast into the basket he had brought.
Upon being praised by the old lady, Lin Wei immediately put on a polite yet slightly shy smile and said, "Thank you, Auntie."
But the smile didn't reach his eyes; he was still calculating the huge sum of money Guan Hongqi had spent.
Having bought breakfast, Guan Hongqi, carrying a heavy basket, called out to Lin Wei with satisfaction, "Come on, let's go home! I'll let you try an authentic breakfast from the capital!"
Lin Wei followed beside him, looking at his tall and straight back, and then at the basket full of food, feeling a mix of emotions.
On the one hand, she felt that Guan Hongqi's generosity towards his family was a good thing, showing that he valued relationships;
On the other hand, there was a hidden worry that he was spending money too extravagantly. If he really transferred to civilian work and lost the military allowance, would he be able to make a living on that meager transfer salary?
She followed silently behind, watching Guan Hongqi's light steps as he bought breakfast that his family liked. In the end, she just sighed softly and temporarily suppressed the worry in her heart.
He maintained a polite smile on his face.
