Guan Wenru's behavior was just like that of a considerate wife.
As soon as her husband came home, she couldn't wait to go and take care of him.
He Yanzhi was very uncomfortable with her behavior and intimacy.
He instinctively avoided her outstretched hand, saying, "I... I can do it myself."
He quickly took off his military overcoat, hung it behind the door, and turned to look at Guan Wanxin. "Grandma Guan, how have you been these past few days?"
He Yanzhi spoke as if he were addressing a guest.
Guan Wanxin raised an eyebrow. "You're used to it. You must be exhausted these past few days. Get some rest tonight."
After saying that, she looked at Guan Wenru and said, "Go to the kitchen and make something for Yanzhi to eat."
Before Guan Wenru could answer, He Yanzhi shook his head, "No need to trouble yourself, I'm not hungry."
What a coincidence.
He had barely finished speaking when his stomach growled.
"..."
He was so embarrassed that he didn't know what to say.
Guan Wenru met his eyes, which seemed to wish he could disappear into the ground, and chuckled. "What's the trouble? You wash up first, and I'll go to the kitchen and see what I can make. You can just eat whatever's available."
He Yanzhi returned too late.
The cafeteria was way past lunchtime; he must be starving by now.
Seeing that Guan Wenru was determined to cook for him, He Yanzhi could only nod and say, "Thank you."
Guan Wenru disliked his overly polite manner, but she didn't say anything and turned to go into the kitchen.
She took out a bowl of Beijing-style fried noodles that was already in the room, but didn't add any side dishes, just the noodles and sauce.
She took some more pickled vegetables from the ceramic jar and then fried two eggs for him.
After He Yanzhi came out of the bathroom, she took the noodles out and put them on the table. "I made these noodles, so please make do with them."
"Okay, thank you." He Yanzhi casually wiped his wet hair.
As he walked over, he saw that she had fried two eggs for herself, and he couldn't help but raise an eyebrow. "Save the eggs for you and Grandma to eat tomorrow morning."
Guan Wenru smiled and said, "Although we can't buy meat, we don't lack eggs now. The fact that I can cook for you means that we have them at home."
My grandma and I have fenced off a piece of land outside the yard, and my sisters-in-law have helped us build a chicken coop out of stones. We now have two hens and 10 chicks.
Although it's winter, the hens still lay eggs every day. Grandma lets the hens out to bask in the sun every day, and this morning, one of the hens even laid two eggs.
With the egg supply for the three of us, we won't lack eggs, so don't worry about eating them.
Upon hearing that they also fenced off land to raise chickens, He Yanzhi paused in his chopsticks.
In his memory, the Guan family had always lived a good life.
Even though policies kept changing in recent years, Grandma Guan always managed to seize the opportunity and turn danger into safety, so her family never experienced hardship.
Their courtyard houses also house long-term workers and nannies.
They probably aren't very skilled at things like raising chickens, growing vegetables, and cooking.
But he discovered that Guan Wenru not only knew how to cook, but now she also raised chickens on her own land.
It certainly surprised him.
He didn't say anything more this time, and silently finished the noodles and eggs in his bowl.
He didn't know if it was because he was too hungry, but he thought this bowl of noodles tasted better than any bowl of noodles he had ever eaten before.
Guan Wenru was sitting opposite him. Seeing how quickly he was eating, she couldn't help but ask, "Is that enough? Or should I make you another bowl?"
"That's enough." He Yanzhi finished eating in no time and put down his chopsticks. "Grandma Guan, Wenru, before I came back, I contacted the person in charge of Dinglan Farm. My parents-in-law have been settled there and are doing well. They will write to us later, so don't worry."
And Hongqi, he's doing well in the army. As a new recruit, he has a lot to learn, so he probably won't have time to contact you. But I've already sent word that he'll write back to let us know he's safe when he has some free time.
Guan Wanxin and Guan Wenruo were overjoyed to hear these two pieces of news.
Guan Wanxin looked at He Yanzhi and expressed her heartfelt gratitude, "Yanzhi, thank you so much."
"Grandma Guan, we're all family, you don't need to be so polite with me. By the way, news came from Beijing that the Zhang family members were taken to the police station by their neighbors after breaking into the courtyard."
However, the police couldn't find any evidence of theft; without substantial evidence, the police had no choice but to release them.
Guan Wanxin had been in contact with people in Beijing these past few days, so she already knew about Zhang Dakai and the others.
Hearing He Yanzhi's words, her expression remained unchanged; she simply smiled and said, "It's alright. Sending them to the police station will suffice. Zhang Dakai is shrewd and has made many connections over the years using my name. He won't get into trouble so easily."
Guan Wenru lowered her head slightly.
As long as Zhang Dakai's entire family doesn't manage to escape abroad in this lifetime, the Guan family won't be affected.
Even if Zhang Dakai and the others cause trouble, she is not worried. After all, the neighbors in the courtyard can testify that the Guan family and the Zhang family have long since severed ties.
She didn't care at all what would happen to the Zhang family.
Although Zhang Dakai is her grandfather by blood, he doesn't deserve for her to call him 'Grandpa'.
Even if he were to have his home ransacked and be beaten to death by the Red Guards, she wouldn't shed a single tear.
He Yanzhi chatted with them for a few more minutes, then got up, took the bowls into the kitchen, and washed the dishes.
It was getting late, so Guan Wanxin went inside first and told the young couple to get some rest.
After Guan Wenru finished washing up, she entered the room and found bloodstains on He Yan's lower back as he was making the bedding.
She was startled and rushed over, lifting the hem of his shirt without a word. "Are you hurt?"
