Side Story: Guan Hongqi vs. Li Jing (5)

He ran from hall to hall, searching through each one, his ears filled with the complaints of the audience and the dissuasion of the waiters, but he couldn't care less about anything else; all he wanted was to see her.

I searched all the screening rooms, but I couldn't find that familiar figure.

In the end, he was half-invited and half-pushed out of the screening area by two male waiters who rushed over after hearing the news.

Standing under the bright, glaring lights of the movie theater lobby, Guan Hongqi was panting heavily, his hair disheveled, and his suit was askew. The reckless energy he had just displayed had dissipated, leaving only immense disappointment and bewilderment.

Seeing the strange and condemning looks from those around him, he finally regained a sliver of clarity.

After calming himself down a bit, he said in a hoarse voice to the waiter who had chased after him, “I’m so sorry, I… I was just looking for someone, I was in such a hurry… I’m sorry… I’ve caused you all this trouble.”

After saying that, he wiped his face dejectedly, ignoring the comments behind him, and walked out of the movie theater in a daze.

A gust of night wind blew, and he shivered.

Standing on the bustling street, he had no idea where to go next.

Only Li Jing's image could be seen in my mind.

It wasn't until this moment that he realized he seemed to depend on her and love her even more than he had imagined!

The thought of losing her made him feel like a powerless puppet, leaning against the cold car with vacant eyes.

Why did she suddenly go on a blind date...? He thought the two of them were just sulking and would make up sooner or later, it was just a matter of who would apologize first.

Unexpectedly, she had already started walking forward, and probably didn't care about his bowing his head.

But... why do I feel so unwilling to accept this?!

Suddenly, as if grasping at a straw, he suddenly remembered something, quickly started the car, and sped towards the alley where Li Jing's house was located.

Regardless of whether she appreciates his humble approach now, he's going to give it a try!

She and that man were only seeing each other, they weren't married, so he couldn't give up!

...

A dozen minutes later, Guan Hongqi parked the Santana under the familiar old locust tree at the entrance of the alley, turned off the engine, and rolled down the window.

Upon arriving here, he suddenly lost his courage, fearing that if he found Li Jing now, he would hear news he didn't want to hear.

The sweltering summer night air, mixed with dust and the smells of roadside restaurants, wafted in.

His expression was solemn, his gaze fixed on the alley where Li Jing's house was located, and his heart was pounding heavily in his chest.

Time passed second by second, and every second felt like torture.

Before he could figure out how to talk to Li Jing, a slender figure suddenly appeared in the light at the entrance of the alley.

It's Li Jing!

But the next second, Guan Hongqi felt as if all the blood in his body had frozen.

Because Li Jing was accompanied by the man Lin Qiangguo had described... a refined-looking man in a white shirt!

The man stopped and spoke gently to Li Jing, who nodded slightly.

The distance was a bit far, and the specific content couldn't be heard, but the peaceful atmosphere of their farewell felt like a dull knife, cutting deeply into Guan Hongqi's heart.

He saw the man turn and leave, while Li Jing stood there, watching him go for a moment before turning to walk into the alley.

Guan Hongqi clenched his fists tightly on the steering wheel, feeling an urge to beat the man up.

But he was still rational. He didn't know what identity he should have when he rushed over, and he didn't know who the 'outsider' would be to Li Jing after he rushed over!

After all, he doesn't seem to have any real identity.

He is not her boyfriend, because they have never officially confirmed their relationship over the years.

Could it be that he's one of Li Jing's suitors?

But what has he been doing for the past six months?

Watching coldly from the sidelines, waiting in a huff.

Perhaps Li Jing only saw him as... an ordinary friend.

What right do ordinary friends have to question her private affairs?

This clear realization was like a bucket of ice water, extinguishing his impulsive flames and leaving only boundless powerlessness and panic.

He watched the boy's figure disappear around the street corner, and watched Li Jing walk alone into the dark alley.

He shoved open the car door and stumbled after her, blocking her path just before she was swallowed by darkness.

The shadow cast by the tall figure completely enveloped her.

Li Jing was startled by the sudden appearance of the person. When she saw that it was Guan Hongqi, all the color drained from her face, leaving only astonishment and the pent-up grievances and coldness that followed.

The two stared at each other in the dim light, the air thick with the silent tension of battle.

Guan Hongqi's Adam's apple bobbed violently a few times. His voice was hoarse from the extreme suppression of his emotions. He stared intently at her, almost forcing out the words through clenched teeth, "You...you went on a blind date?"

Li Jing raised her eyes, her cold gaze like ice frozen in the dead of winter. Without the slightest hesitation, she displayed an almost cruel calm as she retorted, "What does this have to do with you, Comrade Guan?"

A distant and cold "Comrade Guan" was like an ice-cold dagger, precisely piercing Guan Hongqi's last line of defense.

His throat felt like it was blocked by scalding sand. After a long while, he finally found his voice, which trembled almost imperceptibly and carried a hint of pleading, "Li Jing...does it really have to be like this between us?"

He couldn't help but take a half step forward, trying to get closer, his gaze fixed on her. "Can we...can we sit down and have a proper talk?"

Under the dim streetlights, Li Jing's expression remained unchanged, as if covered with a thin layer of frost.

She raised her eyes, her gaze calm to the point of cruelty, and stared directly at him. "Comrade Guan, is there anything left to talk about between us?"

This rhetorical question struck Guan Hongqi like a blow to the head, leaving him dizzy and disoriented.
