Chapter 12 I'll be waiting for you tonight...
After returning, Huo Chenzhou rolled up his sleeves and started boiling water.
Shen Zhixia then noticed that he had also brought a speckled chicken, which had already been processed and chopped into pieces.
"Where did you get this chicken from?" Shen Zhixia asked.
In those days of scarcity, chickens weren't always available; even supply and marketing cooperatives often ran out of stock, let alone service cooperatives.
After cleaning the chicken, Huo Chenzhou put it in a large pot to stew. He said, "I asked someone to buy it. It's a chicken raised by the farmer next door."
Shen Zhixia asked, "How much did it cost?"
"3 yuan."
The price of a chicken is now only about 1 yuan, which is 3 times more expensive than the chicken sold by the supply and marketing cooperative. But there is no other way because the resources are scarce, so the price is high.
Huo Chenzhou was a farmer for generations and his family was poor. He was very frugal and never expected that this man would be so willing to spend money on him.
She stared at Huo Chenzhou for a while, then stepped forward and said, "Let me do it."
Shen Zhixia wasn't bad at cooking. Before she transmigrated into the book, she often ordered takeout, but the dishes she occasionally made according to recipes were quite good. However, the firewood used in this era required bellows to help it burn, and if the fire wasn't controlled properly, it would easily go out, and the thick smoke was choking.
She didn't even know how to start a fire, which is why she hadn't tried cooking. But these days, she had observed Huo Chenzhou cooking and had a pretty good understanding of the process.
Huo Chenzhou never asked her to cook. He was usually very busy. He would cook when he had free time, and when he didn't, he would just ask her to eat together in the cafeteria.
But she felt she still needed to learn slowly.
However, the man simply refused coldly: "No need, you go and rest."
His tone was cold, but Shen Zhixia knew he was just concerned about her.
However, she still pouted and pretended to be unhappy: "Commander Huo, do you think I can't cook or do housework?" She drew out the last syllable, but her voice was sweet as honey, "Tell me, am I particularly useless? I can't even cook or do laundry."
As she spoke, she lowered her eyes, her long eyelashes casting small shadows beneath them, making her look pitiful.
Huo Chenzhou stopped adding firewood, straightened up, and turned around, creating a gust of wind. His eyes remained cold as frost, and his voice was low: "I don't despise you."
Shen Zhixia, however, refused to give in. She snuggled up to him like a soft cat, gently resting her head on his shoulder, her hair brushing against his neck. "Then why don't you try to comfort me?"
She reached out and hooked her little finger around his, gently shaking it.
Huo Chenzhou's body stiffened instantly, a suspicious blush rising to the tips of his ears, but he still kept a straight face. "Don't overthink it."
He turned his head, looking somewhat awkward.
“I wasn’t thinking anything,” Shen Zhixia looked up, her warm breath brushing against his earlobe. “They all say I’m a pampered capitalist’s daughter who can’t do anything.”
As she spoke, her fingertips slowly traced the outline of his arm. Suddenly, she heard something, and her eyes narrowed mischievously: "However, I've discovered something."
Huo Chenzhou's Adam's apple bobbed. He turned his head away from her, but didn't avoid her touch. "What?"
"Here." Shen Zhixia suddenly reached out and pressed her hand against his chest, winking playfully. "Your heart is beating so fast, one beat after another, clearer than a bugle call. Are you shy?"
Huo Chenzhou suddenly grabbed her wrist, wanting to scold her for being shameless, but when he met her bright, smiling eyes, he swallowed the words that were on the tip of his tongue. He said stiffly, "I don't need you to do anything. You just need to be well and bring our child into this world safely."
Shen Zhixia broke free from his hand and threw herself into his arms, wrapping her arms around his neck. "If you won't even comfort me, then I'll have to find some sweetness myself."
As she spoke, she gently kissed his cheek, "Huo Chenzhou, you must always keep me in your arms and never let anyone bully me."
Huo Chenzhou sniffed the direction of her body, and finally slowly stretched out his arm, about to hug her tightly. Just then, the iron pot on the stove suddenly made a "bubbling" sound, and the boiling steam made the lid shake and almost fall off.
He immediately rushed to the stove and reached out to hold down the pot lid that was about to slip off.
The moment the lid was lifted, a rich aroma of chicken soup wafted out, mingling with the scents of scallions and ginger, filling the room.
He reached out and turned down the firewood, his voice hoarse as he said, "The old hen soup needs to simmer for a while longer."
After saying that, the man kept his head down and stared at the pot.
After the chicken was cooked, he first served a bowl of soup to Shen Zhixia, but the chicken in the pot continued to simmer.
After the soup cooled down a bit, Shen Zhixia sipped it slowly.
Huo Chenzhou ate very quickly. The soup and chicken were very hot, but he seemed to feel nothing at all, and a fine layer of sweat appeared on his forehead as he ate.
I wonder if he was sweating.
Shen Zhixia reached out and poked his biceps.
It's really hard.
Huo Chenzhou put down his chopsticks and asked, "Have you been feeling unwell lately? Would you like me to go with you to the clinic for a checkup?"
"No need, I'm perfectly healthy."
Shen Zhixia is being well cared for; she has no adverse reactions so far.
She glanced at the man again; he had a great physique, with broad shoulders, a narrow waist, and long legs.
Shen Zhixia smiled gently and hinted, "Dr. Liu said that once the fetus is three months old, it will be more stable and you don't need to stay in bed all the time. You can do other things too."
Her gaze was fixed on Huo Chenzhou, trying to catch a glimpse of his reaction.
Huo Chenzhou simply nodded: "It's good that things are stable, but we still need to be careful."
Looking at his blank expression, Shen Zhixia felt both annoyed and amused.
She suddenly got up and walked to his side, and unintentionally pressed her body against his back, her warm breath brushing against his neck.
Huo Chenzhou's movements suddenly froze. He seemed to have sensed something, but he wasn't sure. He turned to look at Shen Zhixia, his eyes full of confusion: "What's wrong? Are you feeling unwell?"
Shen Zhixia stomped her foot in a slightly spoiled manner. She reached out and gently tugged at Huo Chenzhou's sleeve, lowering her eyes and muttering softly, "All you ever do is worry about the child..."
Huo Chenzhou was stunned at first, then reacted, his ears turning bright red instantly. He looked at Shen Zhixia in disbelief, his Adam's apple bobbing up and down, unable to speak for a long time.
Just as Shen Zhixia's fingertips touched the old scar on Huo Chenzhou's nape, hurried footsteps suddenly came from outside the window.
"Commander Huo! Emergency meeting!" the communications officer shouted.
Huo Chenzhou suddenly stood up, the buttons of his military uniform brushing against the back of her hand in his haste.
Shen Zhixia grasped his hand, then let go. She whispered, "Then come back early tonight. I'll be waiting for you."
