Chapter 59 The Only Hope
After receiving the items, Zhang Mei breathed a sigh of relief: "Dad, you haven't touched anything in here, have you?"
The old man shook his head: "Ever since you left your things here, I've locked them up and never touched anything inside."
Zhang Mei said, "That's great, Dad. You don't know, the Shen family has been in trouble recently. Old Shen has been detained by the police, and we urgently need to rescue him. We need money right now."
"The money I have here, plus the money I borrow later, will be about enough."
The old man hurriedly said, "Alright, go and save him quickly."
He was old and couldn't understand what was going on, but he didn't want anything to happen to Shen's father. After all, they had always relied on Shen's father, and if something happened to him, where would they get their money?
"Dad, give me the key, let me see it," Zhang Mei said.
She placed the box on the table, frowning, her expression somewhat strange: "I remember I gave you a few gold bars before? Didn't you put them in here?"
The box was very light; it probably only contained bankbooks and couldn't possibly contain gold bars.
"I put them all in there. You don't trust your father?" The old man was a little unhappy. He only had one daughter, Zhang Mei, and he was counting on her to support him in his old age. How could he possibly use her gold bars?
He has always kept the things Zhang Mei gave him carefully.
“I don’t think it was put here,” Zhang Mei said.
The old man was very unhappy with Zhang Mei's reaction, but he didn't say anything. He just found the key and wanted to prove his innocence.
The moment the old key opened the box, it was completely empty.
There was nothing there.
Zhang Mei's expression changed: "Dad, what's going on?"
The old man stared at everything in disbelief, turning the box over and over to examine it, his eyes wide with astonishment: "No, that's not right, there were clearly bankbooks and gold bars inside this box."
Zhang Mei looked at him without saying a word.
The old man grew anxious: "It's true! When I picked up the box just now, I could hear the sound of gold bars inside. It was very heavy. How could it be empty in such a short time? Who took my things?"
This sounded absurd, and not only did Zhang Mei not believe it, but even the old man himself began to have doubts.
After all, it had only been a few minutes from when the box went from his hands to when it went into Zhang Mei's hands. How could it have become empty in such a short time?
"Dad, you're getting old, have you misremembered where you put it? Where did you put it?" Zhang Mei asked impatiently.
The old man also thought he had misremembered, so he began to rummage through drawers and cabinets to find it.
It wasn't in the cabinet.
There was nothing under the bed.
It wasn't on the table.
They searched for a very long time, covered in sweat, but still couldn't find it.
In the end, they all despaired and knew that it was impossible to find it.
Zhang Mei's face was full of anger: "Enough, I don't have time to argue with you anymore. Have you spent it all?"
"I didn't spend it. I just put my savings book and gold bars in here. I swear, if I'm lying, may I be struck by lightning." The old man said seriously.
At that moment, he remembered that he had always kept his things in there because he was afraid of losing them. He would often open the box to check on them, and just last week, he had opened the box to check on them.
The passbook and gold bars were safely stored inside, but why are they gone now?
"I understand, it must have been stolen. Let's go to the police station to report it now!"
The old man angrily grabbed Zhang Mei's hand, intending to go to the police station with her, but Zhang Mei didn't move.
He looked at Zhang Mei in surprise.
Zhang Mei looked at him mockingly and said angrily, "Alright, stop pretending. What kind of thief would steal everything inside the box and leave only the box intact?"
The old man realized something, and his eyes widened: "You still suspect that I used something from here."
"Isn't that right? So many gold bars and bankbooks, you can't use them all, so where did you put them?" Zhang Mei asked, staring at him.
Even if the old man is her biological father, she doesn't trust him at all now. After all, there's real money in the box, who wouldn't be tempted?
She never expected that the old man would actually play along with her in such a charade. It turns out that even between a father and daughter, they couldn't resist the temptation of money.
"How can you doubt me? I've already said it has nothing to do with me. We can report it to the police."
Zhang Mei sneered: "Fine, then go report it to the police now and say you stole the money."
"It wasn't me! This has nothing to do with me. I didn't touch anything inside." The old man's breathing became rapid.
"Pah! You're shameless! Hand over the money right now! I don't believe an old man like you can spend so much money!" Zhang Mei grabbed his collar and questioned him.
She suddenly loosened her collar, and the old man fell to the ground, his face extremely pale.
In the past, Zhang Mei would have paid attention immediately because the old man had a heart condition and couldn't handle any setbacks. But now, she was preoccupied with money and had no time to care about the old man.
Looking at the old man's expression, she said irritably, "You don't need to pretend anymore. Even if you fake being sick, it won't work. You have to give me back my money."
"Let me tell you, this money originally belonged to me. Even if you lost it, you still have to return it to me, or you'll go to jail."
Upon hearing this, the old man became even more agitated, and his body began to convulse.
Zhang Mei didn't even glance at him. Her anger had clouded her judgment. She slammed her fist on the bed and gritted her teeth, saying, "How can you be so shameless? You even dare to steal my money. If I hadn't asked for my money today, I really wouldn't have known what kind of person you are."
After seeing this, Shen Zhixia sensed something was wrong. She quietly went outside and reported it to the police.
Shortly afterward, the police stormed in.
Zhang Mei still looked bewildered: "What are you doing? What right do you have to arrest me?"
Ultimately, Zhang Mei's father was taken to the hospital and successfully resuscitated. He had suffered a sudden heart attack, but fortunately, the timely rescue saved his life.
Zhang Mei was also detained for deliberately inducing her father's illness and failing to provide him with any medical assistance.
These days, such matters are handled very strictly, and Zhang Mei will definitely go to jail.
When Zhang Mei learned that her father had fallen ill, she regretted it and said, "I didn't know. I thought he was faking it. If I had known he was really sick, I definitely wouldn't have treated him like this."
However, nobody believed her.
When Shen's father learned that Zhang Mei had committed a crime and had been arrested, he felt like the sky had fallen.
"What about Chen Jinxiu?"
"She's fine."
Upon learning that Shen Jinxiu had not been arrested by the police, Shen's father nervously clenched his hands: "That's good. Shen Jinxiu is still saving me from outside."
Now, Shen Jinxiu is his only hope.
