Chapter 338 Making Your Own Table
Many of the pieces of furniture in the room were broken.
These pieces of furniture have been there for many years, especially the table in the kitchen. One of its legs is broken, and it creaks every time we eat.
It wasn't too serious at first, but the sound has been getting louder and louder lately.
Shen Zhixia asked, "Are there any carpenters around here? I'd like to have a table remade."
These old pieces of furniture have a limited lifespan, and now they're all rotten to the point that they might as well be cut down and used as firewood.
Huo Chenzhou said, "I can do even something as simple as making a table."
Shen Zhixia asked skeptically, "You can make tables? You're not just bragging, are you?"
You definitely can't do this if you haven't learned it before.
Huo Chenzhou said, "Of course I will. The bed you're sleeping in was made by me."
The wooden bed that Shen Zhixia slept on was very sturdy, and the headboard was painted with pure wood-colored lacquer, which was quite beautiful. She was quite surprised to find out that it was made by Huo Chenzhou.
Since Huo Chenzhou said so, it must be the truth. I just didn't expect him to have this special skill.
Seeing the surprise on Shen Zhixia's face, Huo Chenzhou said, "Making this takes a bit of time, so I usually find a carpenter to do it, but I won't be so busy in a few days, so I'll do it myself."
His main purpose was to see Shen Zhixia's admiration for him, so he decided to come in person.
Shen Zhixia said, "This table can still be used for a while longer; it can be used whenever we want."
Huo Chenzhou felt his whole body brimming with power, and he couldn't wait to do it right now.
Shen Zhixia asked curiously, "You've never studied carpentry, so how do you know this?"
Speaking of this, Huo Chenzhou actually did learn carpentry. This was because Huo Hua had learned carpentry. Initially, Huo Hua helped people around him make some wooden products, but he was in poor health and could not do this for a long time, so he did not continue. Huo Chenzhou followed him and learned for a period of time, becoming even more skilled than Huo Hua.
He later joined the army; otherwise, he might have become a carpenter.
Huo Chenzhou said, "When I was a child, my family was very poor and we couldn't afford furniture, so we made all the tables, chairs and beds ourselves. It's not difficult to make these things, but it's very expensive to buy them."
That's true. When you buy furniture outside, although the furniture is very beautiful, the price is very high.
This weekend, Huo Chenzhou acted immediately, and he even invited Sun Baojun to go into the mountains to cut down trees.
However, Huo Chenzhou did all the tree-cutting work by himself; Su Baojun only helped him carry the trees back.
When he got back, he was so exhausted that he collapsed onto the bed, feeling like his back was broken.
Huo Chenzhou frowned upon seeing his appearance and said, "Sun Baojun, as a soldier, your physical fitness is too poor. You need more training."
His soldiers weren't this useless; he was just asked to help carry trees, how did they end up like this?
Sun Baojun: "..."
He was a member of the cultural troupe. His usual work was for cultured people, like writing propaganda reports or organizing patriotic choral performances. He had never done any physical labor before.
Huo Chenzhou's expectations of him were too high.
However, Huo Chenzhou later made a stool for him as a token of his gratitude. Huo Chunyan liked the stool very much and said that when the child grows up, he can sit on the stool to eat.
Su Baojun thought to himself that by then he would be able to buy many more stools. This stool would have been obsolete long ago, but it was Huo Chenzhou's thoughtful gesture, and the stool he made was indeed very good. He still liked it very much.
That said, after preparing the tools, Huo Chenzhou planned to make a wooden table in the yard.
He brought the two babies out.
There was a blanket on the floor for the two babies, and they sat on the blanket and played.
Huo Chenzhou casually shaved off a piece of wood and began to carve it. He carved one piece of wood into a rabbit and another into a pig, and then gave them to the two children to play with.
The two children were overjoyed and loved the gifts he gave them.
Huo Chenzhou gave the rabbit to Da Bao and the piglet to Xiao Bao.
He was very proud; look how good his skills were! The two children really liked him.
But his smugness didn't last long before the two children started fighting.
The two children have been together since birth and have a very good relationship; this is the first time they've ever argued.
Hearing the commotion outside, Shen Zhixia quickly came out.
The two babies were fighting and crying loudly.
"What's wrong?" Shen Zhixia quickly hugged the child.
The two babies were so upset; their eyes were red from crying.
Huo Chenzhou, at a loss, said, "I don't know either."
They didn't know what was going on, but suddenly they started fighting.
It was only then that Shen Zhixia realized they were stealing things.
A wooden rabbit and a wooden pig.
Shen Zhixia: "?"
She picked up the items and asked, "Did you make this?"
Huo Chenzhou said proudly, "Yes, I did it."
He seemed to be waiting for Shen Zhixia to praise him for his work. He hadn't carved these little things for many years, but as soon as he got his hands on the wood, he knew how. Some of the techniques were etched into his mind.
Shen Zhixia said speechlessly, "They are trying to steal the objects you carved."
The two children were fighting over each other's things, so they started arguing and making a scene. After a while, it turned out that Huo Chenzhou was the culprit.
The culprit didn't think he had done anything wrong at all, and even said with a smile, "So they like what I make so much."
Shen Zhixia put her hands on her hips and said, "It's not that they like it, it's that they like the exact same things. If you carve two rabbits or two pigs, and you carve different things for them, they will naturally make a fuss."
As the two babies grew a little older, Shen Zhixia noticed this problem: they now wanted the same things, even the diapers for wiping their drool had to be the same color. If they found any difference, they would throw a tantrum.
This might be a problem with twins.
Huo Chenzhou's actions were undoubtedly courting death.
Finally, Huo Chenzhou had no choice but to carve an identical rabbit and pig for them, and only then were the two little babies satisfied.
He breathed a sigh of relief and then began to make the table.
This is a very complicated process, and every step is troublesome.
Shen Zhixia sat to the side watching, finding it very interesting. She discovered that watching people make tables was actually a kind of enjoyment.
So she went in and made a bowl of fruit salad, which she ate slowly.
Huo Chenzhou worked for a while, his forehead covered in sweat.
Shen Zhixia went over, took out a handkerchief and gently wiped his sweat, from his forehead to his neck.
"Are you thirsty?" she asked.
Huo Chenzhou stared at her fair face, his throat bobbed, and his voice was hoarse: "Thirsty."
With a smile, Shen Zhixia scooped out a piece of fruit and put it into his mouth.
Huo Chenzhou opened his mouth and took it in.
Um.
It's so sweet.
