The four of them spread out a coarse cloth under the shade of a tree. Just as Jiang Jianhua finished arranging the jujube buns, Yun Tangyin was pulled to sit down next to Fu Yucheng.
He took out an oil paper package from his cloth bag. Inside, he found hawthorn cakes carefully wrapped in oil paper, which were Yun Tangyin's snacks.
"Why did you buy this?" Yun Tangyin's eyes lit up. She picked up a small piece with her fingertips and put it in her mouth. It was so sour that she squinted, but the corners of her mouth were turned up high.
“I know you love it.” Fu Yucheng wiped the sugar crumbs from the corner of her mouth. “I saw it on the shelf when I passed by the supply and marketing cooperative last time, so I bought it for you.”
Jiang Jianhua laughed from the side: "Acheng really cares deeply for Yinyin, he even remembers such a small thing."
Fu Yuanshan was engrossed in eating his jujube bun when he heard this. He glanced at Fu Yucheng and saw him talking to Yun Tangyin. His Adam's apple bobbed, and he suddenly pushed the bun in front of Jiang Jianhua, saying, "You eat too."
Jiang Jianhua was stunned for a moment. When he took it, his fingertips touched Jiang Jianhua's hand, and both of them pulled their hands back as if they had been electrocuted.
Yun Tangyin laughed as she watched, and whispered in Fu Yucheng's ear: "Look at Second Brother, he's copying you."
Fu Yucheng chuckled and popped a peeled wild date into her mouth: "That depends on whether Second Sister-in-law is willing to do me the honor."
As they were talking, Yun Tangyin suddenly hissed as a small red dot appeared on her fingertip from a wild jujube thorn.
Fu Yucheng quickly grabbed her hand, put it in his mouth and sucked on it, his brows furrowed tightly: "I told you to be careful, but you wouldn't listen."
"It's just a small cut." Yun Tangyin tried to pull her hand away, but he gripped it even tighter. "It'll make us a laughingstock."
"Who dares to laugh at my wife?" Fu Yucheng looked up and glanced at Fu Yuanshan and Jiang Jianhua, who quickly lowered their heads and pretended to look at the ground. "Even if the sky falls, it's not wrong for me to protect you."
Jiang Jianhua couldn't help but laugh: "Third brother's protectiveness is just like how Dad protected Mom back then."
Yun Tangyin's face flushed red, and she lightly punched Fu Yucheng: "Don't be so improper in front of your second brother and sister-in-law."
“In my heart, you are more serious than anything else.” Fu Yucheng took out a clean strip of cloth from his pocket and carefully wrapped it around her fingers. “Don’t get it wet these few days, I’ll do the work.”
"You wouldn't know how to do those things," Yun Tangyin muttered, but her heart was filled with sweetness, like she was carrying a piece of honey.
After resting enough, they headed back, but Fu Yucheng insisted on carrying Yun Tangyin on his back.
The mountain path was rugged, and Yun Tangyin was afraid he would get tired, so she refused, saying, "I can walk by myself."
"Listen to me." Fu Yucheng squatted down, his voice carrying an undeniable gentleness, "Your hand is pricked, and it hurts me."
Yun Tangyin couldn't resist him, so she had no choice but to lie on his back and gently wrap her arms around his neck.
Fu Yucheng's shoulders were broad and strong, carrying a warm, sun-kissed scent that made her feel very at ease.
“Look at your second brother and sister-in-law,” Yun Tangyin whispered in his ear, “Your second brother just helped your sister-in-law carry the bamboo basket.”
Fu Yucheng glanced behind him and saw Fu Yuanshan talking to Jiang Jianhua with his head down. Jiang Jianhua's face was flushed and he had a smile on his lips. He couldn't help but laugh and said, "It seems that Second Brother has finally figured it out."
"I learned it from you." Yun Tangyin nuzzled his shoulder with her chin. "You learned it from watching how you coax your wife, didn't you?"
“Of course, my method always works.” Fu Yucheng’s steps were light.
"That's because I'm kind-hearted and you had to be coaxed before you could be coaxed." Yun Tangyin rubbed against his back.
"Yes, yes, my good wife is the kindest." Fu Yucheng coaxed her with a smile, "What do you want to eat tonight? I'll cook for you."
"I want to eat the chicken noodle soup you made last time," Yun Tangyin said softly. "Add two poached eggs."
"No problem," Fu Yucheng replied, quickening his pace. "I'll make sure you eat your fill."
Back home, Fu Yucheng placed Yun Tangyin on the stone bench in the yard and then turned and went straight to the kitchen.
Yun Tangyin watched his back as he tied on his apron. The army green apron on his body, though made of coarse cloth, looked better to her than any fine clothes.
"You rest, I'll start the fire." Yun Tangyin followed her in, and was about to squat down in front of the stove when Fu Yucheng stopped her.
"Go sit down." He pressed her onto the small stool by the stove. "You need to rest since your hand is injured. I can do this work by myself."
When Jiang Jianhua came in, he saw Fu Yucheng busy around the stove and couldn't help but tease him, "Third brother is going to spoil his wife rotten."
"It's good to spoil a genius." Fu Yucheng didn't even turn his head, cracking an egg into the pan. "If I don't spoil my wife, who else should I let?"
Yun Tangyin took the shoe sole from Jiang Jianhua's hand, turned it over and looked at it. The stitches were much finer than before, and she couldn't help but praise, "Second sister-in-law's skills are getting better and better."
Jiang Jianhua lowered his head: "It's alright, it looks better than before."
As the two were talking, Fu Yucheng brought out two bowls of chicken noodle soup. He gave one bowl to Yun Tangyin, which had two golden poached eggs in it, and the other bowl to Jiang Jianhua, which also had a poached egg in it: "Second sister-in-law, please have some too."
Jiang Jianhua took the bowl, feeling a warm glow in his heart: "Thank you, Third Brother."
Fu Yuanshan had just returned from fetching water when he saw the noodles in Jiang Jianhua's hand and peeked into the kitchen: "Do you have any for me?"
Fu Yucheng ladled another bowl from the pot and placed it in front of him.
Fu Yuanshan snorted, but moved closer to Jiang Jianhua while holding his noodles. Seeing that the poached egg in her bowl was untouched, he suddenly transferred the egg from his bowl into hers, saying, "I don't like this."
Jiang Jianhua was stunned. Yun Tangyin secretly smiled at Fu Yucheng, and Fu Yucheng couldn't help but curl the corners of his mouth.
After dinner, Fu Yucheng took Yun Tangyin to the courtyard to look at the moon.
The moonlight, like water, bathed the two of them, and the cicadas chirped incessantly, making it even more lively than during the day.
“Look at this moon, doesn’t it look like the one you picked for me?” Yun Tangyin pointed to the full moon in the sky, her eyes sparkling.
“It doesn’t seem like it.” Fu Yucheng hugged her from behind, resting his chin on the top of her head. “The moon in the water may shatter, but my heart for you will never shatter.”
"Say such sweet nothings again." Yun Tangyin leaned against him, her voice soft. "But I like hearing it."
"Then I'll tell you every day." Fu Yucheng tightened his arms around him. "When we have a big, healthy son, I'll teach him to shoot a gun, and the whole family will be together, okay?"
"Okay." Yun Tangyin's voice was filled with laughter. "You also need to teach him to love his wife like you do."
"Then we need to teach him how to woo a wife first." Fu Yucheng lowered his head and kissed the top of her head. "Just like me, I'll do anything to marry you."
Yun Tangyin smiled and turned around, tiptoed and kissed him on the cheek: "Then I'll let you pester me one more time."
Fu Yucheng's eyes lit up instantly. He picked her up and spun her around, his laughter echoing in the courtyard.
Hearing the laughter from inside the house, Jiang Jianhua glanced out the window and saw the two embracing in the moonlight. He couldn't help but say to Fu Yuanshan, "Look at my third brother and sister-in-law, they're so happy."
