Chapter 154
"Peach cakes! Freshly baked!" Yue Xiulan's eyes lit up, and she pulled Chen Zhaoyue over. "Boss, weigh one pound! I want the ones right out of the oven!"
The golden and shiny peach cakes are wrapped in oil paper, and the warm aroma keeps coming out.
Yue Xiulan couldn't wait to pinch a small piece and put it in her mouth. She squinted her eyes in satisfaction and said incoherently: "It smells good! It smells so good! Sister Chen, you should try it too!" She broke off half a piece and stuffed it into Chen Zhaoyue's hand without saying anything.
Chen Zhaoyue couldn't resist and took a small bite. It was crispy and crumbly, and the rich aroma of lard and egg mixed with sesame seeds spread on the tip of his tongue, with a sweetness that was a bit cloying.
There is no shortage of snacks in her space, but the peach cakes of this era are made with real ingredients and have a pure taste that cannot be compared with the snacks in her space.
Chen Zhaoyue chewed slowly, listening to Yue Xiulan chattering in her ear about which child in the family compound was naughty again, and which sister-in-law was arguing with her mother-in-law again. These trivial and mundane daily stories satisfied Chen Zhaoyue's gossipy heart.
The setting sun completely sank into the distant mountains, leaving only a faint purple ember in the sky. The two, having returned with their full load, set out on the loess road for their return journey.
Yue Xiulan was carrying a bulging cloth bag on her shoulder and holding the bag of peach cakes in her hand, and she was a little out of breath as she walked.
In one hand, Chen Zhaoyue carried a net bag filled with paper, ink, and vaseline, while with the other, she helped Yue Xiulan share a lighter package. The dirt road was bumpy and uneven, and the ruts left by bicycle wheels appeared particularly deep in the twilight.
Yue Xiulan was still excitedly reminiscing about the bright red wedding dress: "Sister Chen, Boss Zhang's craftsmanship must be flawless! When it's done and she puts it on, wow, I'm sure Captain Wen will be completely captivated! Then..."
After the rush for food, the cafeteria was deserted, with only the occasional sounds of chewing and the clatter of bowls and chopsticks. The thick smell of cooking oil mixed with the unique aroma of communal meals filled the air, lingering.
Wen Yanxi sat alone at a long table by the window, his back habitually straight, like a taut javelin. The food in the aluminum lunch box in front of him was almost gone, and each drop of his chopsticks was purposeful, his movements quick and sharp, as if he were carrying out a time-limited mission.
At this moment, the light at the cafeteria entrance was briefly blocked by a figure.
Liu Siyu stood at the door in a white coat. Her eyes quickly swept across the slightly empty hall and soon locked onto the tall figure by the window.
Liu Siyu took a deep breath and subconsciously clenched her right hand, which was hanging at her side and inserted into the pocket of her white coat. Inside, a cold, hard small glass bottle was pressed against her palm, and the bottle body poked her skin, bringing a strange, tingling certainty.
What the system gave me has arrived.
Chen Zhaoyue was on vacation to look at wedding dresses and was not at the health center. This was her only chance.
Liu Siyu calmed herself down and walked towards Wen Yanxi. Her rubber shoes made a slight but dragging sound as they stepped on the concrete floor.
The footsteps approached from afar, with an unmistakable intention of approaching. Wen Yanxi's chewing paused for a barely perceptible moment, and then his already rapid eating speed noticeably increased.
The chopsticks almost scraped the inside of the lunch box, making a sharp sound of metal friction, and the remaining soup and rice grains were scooped into his mouth like a whirlwind.
Wen Yanxi put down his chopsticks, picked up the enamel pot filled with boiled water next to him, tilted his head back and took a big gulp. After putting down the enamel pot, he used only one hand to neatly clean the lid of the lunch box. His movements were smooth and his goal was clear - to leave immediately.
Liu Siyu's heart sank suddenly. Wen Yanxi was avoiding her!
She took two steps at a time and almost ran to the table. Just when Wen Yanxi finished cleaning up and was about to get up, she stepped sideways to block his path.
"Captain Wen!" Liu Siyu spoke, her voice a little hazy because of her haste.
Wen Yanxi paused. He raised his head, his gaze fixed on Liu Siyu's face. His eyes were heavy, like a deep pool of thick ice in winter, calm yet chilling, devoid of any warmth.
Wen Yanxi didn't say anything, just looked at Liu Siyu. The pressure brought by his gaze made the air around them seem to solidify a little.
Liu Siyu's throat tightened, and she nearly retreated under the silent gaze. She forced herself to meet his gaze, leaning forward slightly, and lowered her voice so low that only the two of them could barely hear it. With a deliberate, mysterious urgency, she spoke, "Captain Wen, wait... I have something urgent to tell you... About your health."
Wen Yanxi's brow furrowed ever so slightly, like a tiny crack suddenly passing across the surface of calm ice, so fast that it could have been an illusion. But he remained silent, his deep, pool-like eyes fixed on Liu Siyu, as if examining an unknown object that had intruded into the restricted area.
The silence made Liu Siyu's heart beat faster, pounding against her chest like a drum. She licked her dry lips and leaned closer. Her voice dropped even lower, almost to a whisper, as she spoke with forced courage, "I know... I know your problem. It's about some hidden problem in men."
When Liu Siyu uttered the last two words, the tip of her tongue felt a little stiff. "Don't be afraid, I can help you! I really can cure it!"
This concerns a man's self-esteem. Liu Siyu finished speaking in one breath, staring at Wen Yanxi's face, trying to catch any sign of looseness or desire in him.
However, Wen Yanxi's face remained expressionless, not even a frown twitching. The light from the cafeteria's overhead lights fell on his sharply defined profile, casting a cold, hard shadow. Time seemed to have frozen for a brief moment.
"As long as..." Liu Siyu felt her palms were all sweaty and slippery, and she could hardly hold the small medicine bottle in her pocket. She took a breath and finally threw out the key condition. Her voice trembled slightly with nervousness, "As long as you... don't marry Chen Zhaoyue."
“Bang!”
A sudden and harsh metal collision sound suddenly exploded, breaking the dead silence in the corner of the cafeteria!
Wen Yanxi slammed his chopsticks against the lid of the aluminum lunch box. The force was so strong that the entire lunch box jumped, making a series of short, sharp clangs on the table. The sporadic sounds of chewing and the clatter of dishes and chopsticks instantly died away, and a few curious, inquiring eyes shot over from other corners of the cafeteria.
Liu Siyu was so frightened by the sudden loud noise that her whole body trembled violently. She subconsciously took a small step back, and her heart felt like it was being tightly grasped by a cold hand.
