Chapter 22 On the Train (1)

Shanghai Railway Station was the starting station, and there weren't many passengers in the hard sleeper carriage. Jiang Si quickly found her seat according to the information on her ticket.

She bought the lower bunk, which offers significantly more room to move around and greater comfort compared to the middle and upper bunks.

Jiang Si's suitcase wasn't big, so she just stuffed it under the bed.

After she changed the bed sheets she had prepared in advance, the other passengers in their berths also boarded the train one after another, carrying their luggage.

The middle and upper bunks opposite me were occupied by a newlywed couple, while the upper bunk above me was occupied by a middle-aged man; they all looked quite kind.

The group nodded, which was considered a greeting.

A short while later, the train departed the train station on time.

Jiang Si hadn't slept well the night before and was planning to catch up on some sleep on the train, but as soon as the train left the city, the announcement in the carriage suddenly went off.

The program started by broadcasting several quotes from great figures, with important quotes being repeated three times.

What followed was a series of revolutionary songs or excerpts from model operas.

Occasionally, a few warning reminders will pop up.

For example, a message might read, "Attention, passengers! If you encounter any suspicious persons or incidents, please contact the train conductor immediately."

And the ending must include the line, "Better to investigate a thousand wrongly than to let one guilty person go free!"

I don't know if it's because I've heard it so many times that it's become a conditioned reflex, but whenever this announcement comes on the radio, the passengers in the carriage will subconsciously glance at the people in front, behind, and to the sides.

It seems that only in this way can they clear themselves of suspicion.

Under such scrutiny, Jiang Si had no desire to sleep.

After more than two agonizing hours, the train entered the Jiaxing area, and we were about to arrive at the station in about twenty minutes.

At that moment, the announcement came over the loudspeaker that the food trucks had begun serving lunch.

Upon hearing this, Jiang Si quickly got out of bed. In the morning, she was afraid of getting carsick, so she didn't dare to eat pan-fried pork buns and only drank a few sips of soy milk.

Boiled eggs aren't very filling, and Jiang Si was already hungry.

Hunger was secondary; the main thing was that she wanted to go to the toilet.

I heard that in those days, train toilets were all the straight-line type, so you could see the tracks below while squatting on them.

Not only did it sway back and forth, but the smell inside was also indescribable.

So before entering the restroom, Jiang Si had already prepared herself mentally and even put on a sanitary mask.

But the moment she opened the toilet door, Jiang Si froze instantly.

This is truly a case of the predecessors defecating and the successors suffering the consequences!

Jiang Si just couldn't understand it. Wasn't there a toilet opening? How could he still poop all over the floor...?

"Comrade, are you getting on or not?" The passenger behind him in line urged, clutching his stomach.

With no other option, Jiang Si had to bite the bullet and go inside.

Thankfully, there was a toilet in the small cabin, otherwise she would have really had a breakdown.

There were many people in line, so Jiang Si quickly went out after washing her hands after using the restroom.

Just as I got near the dining car, my way was blocked by passengers queuing to get off.

When I tried to retreat, I found there was nowhere left to go.

Jiaxing Station is a small station, and trains only stop for eight minutes.

These days, everyone carries a lot of luggage when they go out. Train doors are only so big, and when they open, those getting on will be eager to grab seats, while those getting off will be eager to get off, so there will be a lot of competition.

If you don't queue up in advance, you might not even be able to touch the train door later.

Sure enough, as soon as the train came to a stop, the passengers surged forward in a rush, and Jiang Si could only passively move forward with them.

Good heavens, if she hadn't grabbed the door handle in time, she would have been pushed off the bus!

However, less than a second after she breathed a sigh of relief, Jiang Si was slammed hard into her left shoulder.

The other person's force was too great, and Jiang Si was not paying attention for a moment. Her forehead hit the car door with a thud.

When she looked over, she could only see a blurry outline of a back view.

Hitting someone and running away without even an apology? You can't expect to get away with something so easy.

Jiang Si instantly became angry, and took three steps in two to grab the other person's clothes.

"How do you walk? You bumped into someone and didn't even say sorry?"

The man hunched over, as if in a hurry, "I'm so sorry, I wasn't paying attention and accidentally bumped into you, I'm so sorry..."

The other party showed a good attitude in admitting their mistake, and Jiang Si did not have any actual injuries.

This matter can only end here.

After glaring at the other person a few times, Jiang Si rubbed her sore shoulders and quickly went to the dining car.

Lunch has just started serving, and there are still many meat and vegetable options to choose from.

I glanced at the dishes; they looked pretty good, and they smelled quite appetizing.

"Comrade, I'd like a serving of sweet and sour pork ribs, a serving of hot and sour shredded potatoes, and a small bowl of rice."

"Okay, sweet and sour pork ribs are 40 cents, shredded potatoes are 5 cents, rice is 4 cents, would you like a small soft drink?"

"Give me a bottle."

"Okay, the small soda is 16 cents, so it'll be 65 cents in total."

Jiang Si paid the bill, picked up her plate, found an empty seat, and began to eat.

Just as they were enjoying their meal, two uniformed police officers suddenly sat down opposite them with serious expressions.

"Excuse me, sir, could you please show me your ticket?"

Influenced by the broadcasts of the previous hours, Jiang Si was surprised but still showed her ticket as required.

Are you going to Guangzhou?

"right."

What are you going to Guangzhou for?

“My fiancé is on Qiongzhou Island, and I need to transfer in Guangzhou to get there,” Jiang Si told the truth.

At this point, she realized that the two police officers were not conducting a routine check, but were actually interrogating her as if she were a spy.
