Huo Tingzhou nodded, exchanged a few more words with Xiao Zhengjun, and then took Jiang Si back.
Knowing that his wife hadn't eaten lunch yet, Huo Tingzhou rolled up his sleeves as soon as he got home.
"Honey, why don't you lie down on the sofa for a while? I'll roll out some noodles for you, make some hand-pulled chicken noodles, and stir-fry some shredded potatoes with vinegar, okay?"
Jiang Si shook her head. "I don't want to eat right now."
"What's wrong?"
Seeing that her expression was a little off, Huo Tingzhou seemed to realize something, "Were you frightened today?"
Giving birth is a very arduous, even somewhat bloody, process, and Huo Tingzhou was worried that it would leave her with psychological trauma.
"I'm fine." Jiang Si patted the corner of the sofa, gesturing for him to sit down and talk.
Huo Tingzhou obediently sat down, held her hand, and stroked it for a while before asking.
"If you weren't scared, then why don't you want to eat?"
Jiang Si gave him a deep look, and after a long while asked, "When are we setting off this time?"
Huo Tingzhou was taken aback for a moment, "You...you knew all along?"
"Mm." Jiang Si nodded.
As she spoke, she raised her hand and touched his handsome eyebrows and eyes.
"Don't keep frowning, you've got wrinkles here."
"Okay, I'll do as you say."
Huo Tingzhou stared intently at her. "I didn't say a word about leaving. How did you know?"
"What's so difficult about that?"
Jiang Si met his gaze and said seriously, "You probably don't even know it yourself, but the way you look at me before you go on a mission is different from usual."
His eyes held a mixture of unspoken words and deep remorse.
"Wife, I'm sorry."
Huo Tingzhou grabbed her hand and buried his face in her palm.
There were so many things I wanted to say, but I swallowed them all back down.
After a long pause, he looked up and said, "Honey, this is the third time I've left you here. Aren't you angry?"
Jiang Si suddenly laughed, "I'm not a pufferfish, why would I have such a big temper?"
He chose his own path, and Huo Tingzhou was simply doing what he was supposed to do.
If you get angry over such a small thing, how will you live your life in the future?
Not wanting to dwell on such matters, Jiang Si asked, "Are we leaving this afternoon, or when?"
"Tomorrow morning."
"That's perfect. You'll have to help me tidy up these things at home."
"Okay, I'll get it done in a bit."
"I'll go with you."
There was just too much stuff to tidy up at home; he couldn't possibly manage it all by himself.
Thinking this, Jiang Si glanced at the courtyard again.
It was the height of summer, and the vegetables and fruits in the yard were growing like crazy.
The thought that all of this would be razed to the ground by the flood in just a few days made Jiang Si feel somewhat uneasy.
Huo Tingzhou saw the reluctance in her eyes and squeezed her hand.
"As long as everyone is alright, none of these things matter. When I get back, I'll plant whatever you want."
"Mm." Jiang Si nodded.
At this point, there's no other way.
Jiang Si originally didn't have much of an appetite, but after being coaxed by Huo Tingzhou for a while, she finally ate a small bowl of cold chicken noodles.
In this kind of weather, you get sleepy after eating a full meal.
So after finishing her meal, Jiang Si went back to her room for a nap.
We had agreed that I would sleep for about an hour and then get up.
When I woke up, it was almost four o'clock.
When Jiang Si went to the living room, she realized that the house had changed drastically.
The living room table is now covered with all sorts of odds and ends.
Sofas and similar items were placed on benches.
The benches are all placed against the wall, with about 50 centimeters between each bench, which is just right for placing them.
The cucumbers, green beans, eggplants, peppers, lemons, and tomatoes in the vegetable garden have all been picked.
They were all neatly stacked in the basket.
Jiang Si went to the kitchen again and found that all the pots and pans in the house had been moved to the top shelf of the cabinet.
There's also a huge water tank in the kitchen.
The water tank is now full of water, and the wooden basins and enamel basins in the house are also full of water.
The most extreme example is the corner of the staircase, where there is almost no place to step.
Because the exact severity of the typhoon was uncertain, Huo Tingzhou didn't dare move his belongings to the attic.
So these items in the house were either placed in high places or moved to the stairs.
Furthermore, all of these items were tied with ropes.
Huo Tingzhou was outside clearing the drainage ditch when he saw Jiang Si wake up, so he quickly carried the prepared wide wooden plank back inside.
Next, he spent several more hours reinforcing all the doors and windows in his house.
In particular, the room where Jiang Si lived had a cross-shaped wooden frame inside and out.
He kept busy like this until after 9 p.m. before he finally stopped.
"Honey, this is an emergency kit. Keep it safe."
When Jiang Si opened it, she found a flashlight, batteries, matches, mosquito coils, candles, and medicated oil inside.
Military-grade compressed biscuits, military-grade tin canned food, a pack of common medicines, a roll of bandages, a bottle of disinfectant alcohol...
Huo Tingzhou had prepared almost everything he could think of for her.
Even so, he still couldn't put his mind at ease.
"Honey, listen to the radio these next few days. If you receive an evacuation order, don't take anything from home except this emergency kit and a bottle of water..."
Jiang Si nodded. "I know."
