Chapter 222 Newbie Benefits
"Yes, usually newbies get perks in games." Xiang Yun pulled up the fishing line, revealing a brightly colored fish on the hook.
Xu Songning pointed at it and said, "We're not going to eat this for lunch, are we? It doesn't look like something we could eat at all. It looks like a poisonous mushroom."
The colorful fish flicked its tail in dissatisfaction.
"You can switch to another one, pick one of your favorite colors." Xiang Yun pointed to several fish of different colors in his fishing bucket.
Xu Songning really wanted to say that it was okay not to eat it, because eating this fish would make you see little people holding hands and jumping into the sea.
The fishing line in her hand suddenly sank; something had taken the bait!
Xu Songning pulled up the fishing rod; it was quite heavy. She used some strength to lift the thing from the bottom of the water.
A large, lively fish was caught on the hook, swishing its tail.
"Wow, sister, you're amazing!" the child exclaimed dramatically.
"Sister Xu, this fish is good." Xiang Yun said with a smile.
Xu Songning put the fish into the bucket and shook the bucket, saying, "It's alright, just a little bigger than your fish."
The man next to him turned green with envy. His fishing rod still hadn't moved. He lifted it up to take a look, but still hadn't caught anything.
Xu Songning squatted down next to him. "Big brother, you can't make any noise, otherwise how will the fish take the bait?"
Big Brother: "..."
Fortune's wheel keeps turning, why hasn't it turned to him yet?
Xu Songning held the fish with both hands, lifted it up, and showed it to his older brother from all sides, making sure his brother could see it. He deliberately placed it right under his brother's nose so he could see it.
"Look at this fish of mine, isn't it big?"
The older brother looked speechless. If her boyfriend hadn't been there and looked tall, he would have cursed at her.
"Sister, you promised me you would release the first fish." The child leaned closer to her, his fair little face incredibly cute.
"Of course." Xu Songning threw the fish into the sea, keeping his promise.
The child happily released the two fish from his bucket back into the sea, and then intently counted the fish swimming around below.
Xu Songning wanted to pinch his cheek, but considering the many taboos against children in foreign countries, she decided against it.
She sat back down next to Xiang Yun, hooked the second taro ball onto the fishing hook, and cast it in.
Before long, she caught another fish.
"Brother Yun, look, I caught another one." Xu Songning held the fish up in front of Xiang Yun to show off.
Xiang Yun put the fishing rod aside, took a picture of her and the fish with the camera hanging around his neck, and said, "The second fish, not bad."
“Yes, unlike some people who have all the equipment but still can’t catch any fish,” Xu Songning said, hands on his hips.
The older brother was speechless. He looked at the child's almost empty milk tea cup, then at the bait he had specially prepared. After some internal struggle, he decided to swallow his pride and speak up.
"Little friend, could you share some of your bait with me?"
"Sure, but like the lady before, you have to put the first fish back into the sea," the child replied, sticking his bottom out.
He had no interest in fishing; he only watched the fish, so he naturally didn't need the bait.
"Okay." The older brother readily agreed. Once the first fish was caught, the second one would be a piece of cake.
The child rolled out a taro ball for him, and the older brother's eyes widened as he pointed at Xu Songning, "Why does she have two?"
The child looked at him with an air of self-righteousness. "That's because my sister is very pretty, uncle."
The older brother muttered to himself as he hung the taro paste on the fishing hook. The sight of taro paste on his expensive fishing hook looked both ridiculous and comical.
But with two successful examples right in front of him, he had no choice but to believe it.
Other tourists also caught their own fish. He had all his equipment set up. If he didn't catch a single fish, he would definitely be laughed at, especially by that brat next to him!
The buoy sank, and the man immediately reeled in the line. A large fish, as long as an arm, leaped out of the water and was caught in his hand.
The fish was so slippery that he couldn't catch it at all. He had to pounce several times before he finally managed to grab it and put it in the bucket.
"Hahaha! I caught one!" The man was as happy as a child, and the surrounding tourists also gave him face, applauding one after another.
The child squatted down beside him, watching him. "Uncle, you promised me you'd let it go."
"I...I'll release it later." The older brother's heart was bleeding. If he released such a big fish, when would he ever catch a second one?
"Adults don't lie to children, you know." The child stared at him as he continued fishing.
For some reason, after switching back to his own bait, the older brother couldn't catch any fish again. Frustrated, he scratched his head, sighed, and continued fishing.
Xu Songning and Xiang Yun handed the fish to the chef. Xiang Yun instructed the chef to prepare the extra fish for the child's mother.
There was no other food on the boat. The child had just released the fish, and they would probably have to buy more from the crew later. They didn't want to take the extra fish with them, so they decided to share it with others.
When the crew delivered the steamed fish, the child's mother was surprised. Upon learning that it was a gift from a Chinese couple, she wrapped a scarf around her neck and came over to thank them.
"Thank you so much, you are so kind to share the fish you caught with us."
"You're welcome. Would you like some fish, little one? If not, the chef can make you a sandwich," Xu Songning replied with a smile.
The child's mother was very happy and looked at her child with love. She explained to Xu Songning, "No, the child eats fish because he doesn't want to eat the fish he caught himself. He's still young and thinks those are his playmates."
“The child is very cute, and you have taught him very well,” Xu Songning said.
The mother looked at the well-matched couple and said with a smile, "Your child will definitely be very cute."
"Cough cough." Xu Songning pulled the straw out of his drink and almost choked.
Xiang Yun calmly tore off a piece of paper and helped her wipe the water stains off the table.
Their fish was served with a special layer of chili peppers sprinkled on top, making it spicy and numbing.
"Brother Yun, have a bite first, I'm a little scared." Xu Songning looked at the steamed fish, which looked quite appetizing, but didn't dare to touch it.
When they were still alive, their colors were truly terrifying.
Xiang Yun tore open a disposable chopstick, picked up a piece of fish and put it in his mouth. He chewed carefully, paused, and calmly replied, "Hmm, it tastes pretty good."
"real?"
"Hmm, it tastes like grass carp."
Xu Songning took a bite with some skepticism. The strange chili flavor was mixed with a heavy oil. The fish was very tender, but the taste was really mediocre. It couldn't compare to the dozen or so ways of cooking fish in China.
"I still miss the food from back home." Xu Songning poked at a piece of fish and put it in his mouth with a look of utter despair.
Unfortunately, the boat won't be docked for the time being, so all we can eat is fish, and there's not even rice.
