Chapter 39 Better to Have Nothing Than Something Inferior

Chapter 39 Better to have none than something of poor quality

Isn't that how relationships are? Old flames leave, and new flames arrive.

With so many people in the world, finding someone suitable among billions is like reaching for the moon.

Xu Songning never felt that her age was a problem. Her principle has always been to be single rather than settle for less. Even if she remains single, she will always be clear-headed.

There are too many people around her who are blinded by love. She is no longer that naive age, able to give everything for love and lose herself like them.

I am who I am, and I stick to the industry I love and my beliefs.

Unless, of course, someone comes along who can make her a better person, making her willingly step into the "cage" of marriage.

With these thoughts in mind, Xu Songning lay in bed, unable to clear her mind and unable to fall asleep for a long time. When she was alone, her mind was clear, and there were many things she didn't want to think about, so she wouldn't think about them. But as soon as her mother brought it up, her mind was like a slideshow, with different thoughts flashing through her head.

Left with no other option, she started counting sheep. As she was counting, her phone lit up and vibrated.

Someone called her, interrupting her ineffective sheep counting.

"Hello." Xu Songning answered with his eyes closed.

"Asleep?" A deep, magnetic voice came from the other end of the phone. Xu Songning admitted that he was a complete voice enthusiast, his ear pressed against the phone, his fingers scratching his palm.

"No, I'm counting sheep," Xu Songning replied.

"Did you receive the fruit?" Xiang Yun asked. He glanced at the delivery time; it had arrived an hour after he left. Unable to wait for Xu Songning to message him, he hesitated a few times before finally calling her.

I was worried she had fallen asleep, so I was about to hang up after the phone rang a few times, but it was answered.

Perhaps because he was huddled under the covers and feeling a bit sleepy, Xu Songning's voice sounded very soft, traveling through the electric current and burning the ear on the other end of the receiver.

"Received it, so much fruit, I can't finish it all." Xu Songning chuckled softly.

The fruit delivery person knocked on the door, and she was startled when she opened it. Several boxes of fruit were stacked together, almost half her height. Fortunately, the person was responsible and helped her move them into the kitchen. Otherwise, if she had to move them all by herself, she would have a sore back and aching waist by the time she went to work the next day.

"Blueberries, cherries, durian, oranges... Do you buy whatever's expensive, Yun-ge?"

"No, I didn't know if you liked them or not, so I picked a box of each kind. If there are any fruits you don't like, I'll take them over for my colleagues to eat." The sound of turning pages came from Xiang Yun's end.

Listening to the sound of pages turning, Xu Songning yawned, seemingly feeling even sleepier.

"Okay, whatever you say. Are you home yet? Are you done with your work?"

"I'm home now, and I'm reading."

"You also enjoy reading?" Xu Songning chuckled, recalling the stack of books she had seen in his bedroom, all of them professional books. Could it be that Xiang Yun was reading professional books when he couldn't sleep at night?

I heard the sound of a chair being pushed on the other end of the microphone; something was being placed on the table.

Xu Songning imagined the commotion Xiang Yun was making. He figured Xiang Yun, who had been sitting at his desk reading, would stand up, causing his chair to shift back a few centimeters. The chair in Xiang Yun's bedroom was covered in sound-absorbing material, so any noise he made late at night wouldn't disturb the people downstairs.

"It's not a textbook, it's a novel." Xiang Yun lay down on the bed and turned on the magnolia-patterned nightlight.

It was a warm-colored nightlight, and Xu Songning was getting sleepy.

What novel is it?

The sound of turning pages came from the other end of the phone. Xu Songning put the phone on speakerphone, placed it on her pillow, closed her eyes, and tried to fall asleep.

"Want to listen to 'Finnegans Wake'?" Xiang Yun put the headset to his lips for clearer sound reception.

“Listen, you read it.” Xu Songning was more than happy to oblige.

"The river rushes on, passing Eve and Adam, winding along the coast to the bay..."

The power of words soothed Xu Songning's tense mind, smoothing out the wrinkles. Xiang Yun's voice, paired with these obscure and artistic words, was undoubtedly a powerful sleeping pill.

She didn't know when she fell asleep, and when she woke up the next day, her phone was dead, even though it still had 30% battery left before she went to sleep. Her alarm didn't go off in the morning, but luckily Ms. Xu woke her up.

Once her phone was charging, Xu Songning opened the chat window and discovered that they had been talking for six hours. Although she had fallen asleep a few minutes after Xiang Yun started reading the novel, Xiang Yun hadn't hung up. She didn't know how long he had been reading before she realized she had fallen asleep.

Xu Songning was eating breakfast at the table when he suddenly looked up and asked his mother, "Mom, I don't snore when I sleep, do I?"

"Sweetie, you're sleeping so well, you always are," Ms. Xu replied, thinking she hadn't slept well. "What's wrong? Were you feeling unwell last night?"

"No, I was just... asking casually." Xu Songning stuffed a mouthful of noodles into his mouth, trying to change the subject, so he praised Ms. Xu, "Mom's breakfast is still the best, much better than what you buy outside."

"You still have such a sweet tongue. Hurry up and go to work after you finish eating. I plan to visit some friends during the day; it's been so long since I've seen them." Ms. Xu sighed. She has many friends, and as soon as the news of her return to China spread, many people wanted to invite her out.

Compared to this, she felt even more that her daughter should make more friends, otherwise, if she even dates someone from the airport, how can she separate work and life?

Although Xiao Xiang seems like a good person, his appearance is too good, and he is a pilot. People will always try to associate his profession with something special and flock to him. His private life may not be clean. People who travel around a lot may not stay in one place. This is what worries Ms. Xu the most.

When Xu Songning and Chen Ou broke up, Ms. Xu wondered if it was because he had cheated on her, but Xu Songning kept saying no and never had a proper talk with her about the reasons for the breakup, so the matter was simply dropped.

Ms. Xu regretted that she should have paid more attention to her daughter's relationship status. She should have personally overseen this aspect and arranged other alternatives as well, because one shouldn't put all their eggs in one basket.

Xu Songning had no idea that her mother had already made up her mind to introduce her to a few more high-quality men. She packed several bags of fruit and took them to the airport. First, she gave Lu Xiaomeng some of her favorite cherries, and then she shared the fruit with her other colleagues.

Sister Wang's apprentice was a little embarrassed when he saw her. Last time, when he helped her serve coffee, the old fox tricked him into thinking that she already had a boyfriend, which made Xu Songning deny the rumors for half a month. So he stood at a distance and didn't dare to come and take the fruit.

Xu Songning found it amusing and beckoned him over, "What are you standing there for? Get some fruit."

"Thank you, Sister Xu." The young man blushed as he accepted the handful of blueberries. He was tall and thin. He glanced at Xu Songning and then ran off like the wind.
