Chapter 85 Are they together?
Xiang Yun actually phrased it rather tactfully. Gu Xing's exact words were: "Are you two together?! How did she know you had a 747 airplane model in your bedroom? That's too much, Xiang Yun! You brought her home, and your brother was kept in the dark, thinking you were still innocent colleagues and neighbors! No, in TV dramas, neither of those relationships are exactly innocent! Say something! Say something! Xu Songning isn't replying, so you're pretending you're not there, are you?"
"Flying." Xiang Yun replied with two simple words.
"Haha! Brother, we're of one mind, and you're trying to outsmart us? You think I'm stupid? You think I can reply to messages while I'm flying?"
"Um."
Next, it was another explosive moment for Gu Xing, and Xiang Yun skillfully used the message do-not-disturb function.
Xu Songning smiled, his fingers typing rapidly. After typing, he deleted each word and pressed the voice button.
"We didn't talk about anything, just casually chatted about Boeing and Airbus. He told me that you used to fly international routes in a Boeing 747, which reminded me of the airplane model in your bedroom. I casually mentioned it, but I didn't say that I stayed overnight at your house. That would have been too misleading."
"Hey, Yun-ge, how do you think I talked to him?"
Xiang Yun immediately made a phone call.
Xu Songning slowly took the spoon, which tapped against the rim of the bowl, making a crisp sound.
"Eating?" Xiang Yun's voice was a little soft. The sound of her clothes shaking came through the receiver, followed by the rustling sound of her body rubbing against her clothes, as if someone was making that sound of clothes rubbing against her ear.
"Hmm, are you changing clothes?" Xu Songning rested her chin on her hand, no longer in the mood to eat, and focused on making a phone call.
"You could tell that? I thought I kept my phone far enough away."
Xiang Yun's soft laughter reached her ears, and she took the phone back into her hand.
"It's far enough, but what kind of ears does Sister Xu have? She listens to so many aerial conversations every day, she's developed them a lot." Xu Songning was in a good mood, easily lifting one leg and pressing it on the knee of the other, gently wiggling her toes.
"Sister Xu has really good hearing."
"But then again, chatting with Gu Xing is no different from revealing the secret yourself. The airplane model was in the bedroom, and you just happened to see it. How am I supposed to explain this to Gu Xing?"
Xu Songning glanced around. There weren't many people around, and everyone was busy with their own things, not paying attention to her. She covered the microphone and said softly, "So how do you plan to explain this?"
The ball was kicked back.
Xiang Yun chuckled softly, his voice sexy and deep, "Whatever you say is fine?"
Xu Songning stirred the porridge in her bowl and said, "Oh, just say I went to your house for a while. I can't exactly say I slept at your house, can I? If you want to say that, you have to explain it clearly for me, otherwise Sister Xu will have another scandal."
"Okay, I'll explain." Xiang Yun changed his clothes and sat down at his desk. He asked Xu Songning, "What book were you reading last time?"
"Which time?" Xu Songning couldn't quite remember; she did read her textbooks and study every day, though. But surely Xiang Yun wasn't here to check on her work progress?
“You left a book at the coffee shop that time,” Xiang Yun reminded her, while opening his browser to search for information.
He wasn't sure if it was a collection of poems or just an excerpt from one. The cover wasn't the original; it was wrapped in a layer of dark, opaque paper.
Xu Songning recalled carefully, and it seemed that there was such a thing.
During the Chinese New Year, a colleague asked her to take a book back to the storage room for her. However, while waiting for her coffee, she casually flipped through a couple of pages, left the book on the table, and forgot to take it with her. Xiang Yun happened to find the book.
“That book isn’t mine; it belongs to a colleague. If you’re interested, I’ll ask her about it,” Xu Songning said honestly.
Xiang Yun said, "No need, it's not that important."
He was only touched by those few lines of poetry that suddenly came to mind; he knew the poems were from Tagore's "The Gardener".
So, guided by some inexplicable feeling, I opened Taobao and ordered a bilingual set.
While he was at it, he swiped his finger across the screen. The sheer number of bookmarks was dazzling. A hollowed-out bookmark shaped like a kitten caught his eye. He clicked on it and specifically chose a calico cat design.
Xu Songning asked curiously, "What's wrong? Why are you suddenly asking about this book?"
Xiang Yun had a pair of blue light blocking glasses, without any prescription, which he held in his hand and gently shook, saying, "I just feel like it's fate."
"Hmm?" Xu Songning let out a soft, questioning hum.
"It's okay, you eat first, I need to rest for a while." Xiang Yun rubbed the bridge of his nose, covered his mouth and yawned, trying his best not to let the other person hear.
However, Xu Songning still heard the slight noise and quickly said, "Then you go to sleep. Don't pay attention to Gu Xing. We'll talk about it when you wake up."
"Mmm." Xiang Yun's voice was tinged with a smile.
The two said goodbye to each other before hanging up the phone.
While eating, Xu Songning was still wondering what book it was from last time. She quickly flipped through a page without paying much attention to the contents.
Why was Xiang Yun suddenly interested? She didn't understand, and she was too lazy to think about it anymore; her shift was about to start again.
By the time she got home from get off work, it was already late at night.
Recalling what happened last time, she couldn't help but glance behind her a few more times, and then peek into the bushes.
That glance was all it took; something dark in the grass moved.
Her eyelids twitched, and she saw someone sitting at the entrance of the stairwell, almost letting out a scream.
The man furtively raised his head, and she swallowed hard. "Mom! What are you doing here in the middle of the night?"
Xu Songning's temple veins throbbed. The lights at the entrance of the building were bright, but Ms. Xu insisted on sitting in the corner, hidden in the shadow of a big tree, which almost scared her to death.
"Oh dear, stop shouting, everyone's asleep." Ms. Xu tugged at the rope, and something dark emerged from the grass. Xu Songning then realized it was her family's calico.
Sanhua happily rolled around, covered in grass clippings; she definitely needed a bath soon.
Xu Songning picked up the cat and, like patting a doll, brushed off the grass clippings from its body.
"I forgot to walk the cat, so I sneaked over for a walk at night, and you caught me red-handed," Ms. Xu said with a laugh.
Xu Songning's heart settled back down, and she sighed, "It's okay, it won't run away if it forgets. It's happy playing at home by itself. A 130-square-meter space isn't enough for it to play in, is it? I'm worried about you going out so late at night, especially abroad, where the security is nowhere near as good as here."
"Alright, it's your turn to nag Mommy. Mommy got it. Let's go home." Ms. Xu took the cat from her arms, stroking it as she laughed, "My chubby granddaughter has really gotten a bit heavy. She can't keep eating like this."
Xu Songning smiled helplessly. Wasn't Sanhua fattened up by Ms. Xu and Xiang Yun? Although she occasionally indulged Sanhua in eating, yes, occasionally, she wasn't the culprit behind Sanhua's weight gain.
Xu Songning opened the door and let Ms. Xu carry Sanhua in first. The sound of the latch locking behind them could be heard.
"Click".
Xu Songning subconsciously turned his head and met Xiang Yun's eyes as Xiang Yun was about to go out to throw away the trash.
