If it were 2017 before the time travel, then New Youth magazine would have a history of more than a hundred years.
The significance of this magazine does not lie in how long its history is, but in the significance of its existence at that time.
As Mr. Hu Shi said about New Youth: It is one of the few newspapers and periodicals that has influenced the course of Chinese history.
Yes, although this publication was only published for eleven years, it led to the failure of the New Culture Movement to complete its historical mission, and New Youth has been praised and criticized in later generations. But it is undeniable that this newspaper has made immortal contributions in criticizing the patriarchal autocratic society of more than 2,000 years and promoting the transformation of China into a modern society.
In later generations, many New Youth magazines were preserved in major libraries or museums, but Yang Jing seemed to be known by only a few people who had preserved a complete set of 11 volumes, a total of 63 issues. Of course, some collectors may still have a complete set of New Youth, but since it has not been made public, it is enough to prove the preciousness of this set of magazines.
In fact, it doesn’t matter how much this set of publications is worth. The key is that its historical status is too important.
It is no exaggeration to say that the significance of this set of publications in later generations definitely far exceeds those five pages of Song Shu engravings!
This is an enlightenment publication of China's new cultural movement and thought. Do you think it is important or not?
Chen Duxiu, Li Dazhao, Qu Qiubai, Lu Xun, Hu Shi, Liu Bannong, Qian Xuantong, Zhou Zuoren, Shen Yinmo, Mao Dun, Gao Yihan... countless well-known or even famous celebrities have left their mark in this series of publications. Even our great-grandfather wrote a lot of articles and published them in this publication!
Do you think this publication is powerful? Do you think this publication is important?
"SO, I must get this set of "New Youth"!" Yang Jing thought silently in his heart.
Although he had made this decision, Yang Jing still didn't understand why such precious publications appeared in such a place? Moreover, they appeared in piles, as if the museum or library that originally collected this set of publications had cleared them out because of moving.
"Huh? The museum is moving?" Thinking of this, a memory suddenly popped up in Yang Jing's mind.
Yang Jing once read a piece of document that could be described as a myth. It was about a phenomenon in the 1990s when precious documents, old books, and valuable manuscripts appeared crazily in Panjiayuan for a period of time.
This information comes from Mr. Wang Jinchang, a famous collector from Yenching University. In a memoir, he wrote about his experience of searching for precious manuscripts and documents at the Panjiayuan Flea Market in the 1990s.
According to Mr. Wang, in the 1990s, the same era that Yang Jing is now traveling through, many precious celebrity manuscripts, documents, publications, and old books suddenly appeared in the Panjiayuan flea market. Once, Mr. Wang bought a large sack of letters and documents from Panjiayuan. When he was loading it into his car, the janitor was very puzzled and asked how much this "junk" could be sold for, and your parking fee today is only ten yuan! When he returned to the unit, the new security guard saw that he was not dressed properly and was holding a torn sack in his hand, and he refused to let him into the yard no matter what. Later, a colleague came out and explained that it was the leader of the unit. The security guard was very surprised and muttered, "Then why is he picking up junks?"
In fact, no one else understands that this "junk" contains deep culture and history.
After more than 20 years of collecting "junk", Wang Jinchang has become a real "rich man". Now he owns the handwriting of political celebrities such as Taizu, Premier Zhou, Chen Yun, Li Xiannian, and countless manuscripts of cultural celebrities such as Lu Dingyi and Zhou Yang. The "most important" of his collection is the materials of modern revolutionary history. He owns more than 1,000 revolutionary relics, such as a large number of Soviet documents from the Chinese Soviet and the Chinese Workers and Peasants Red Army, early party newspapers and journals, Red Army family letters, military and political letters, etc.
"Many people collect things from the Ming and Qing dynasties because those things are valuable and can fetch hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars at auction, but I think collecting the history of our party is very meaningful." These are what Mr. Wang once said.
In fact, in the circle of cultural scavengers, Mr. Wang is not considered a "BOSS" level powerhouse. The real powerhouse is the famous Mr. Zhao Qingwei.
At Panjiayuan, at Yenching, and even throughout China, when the name Zhao Qingwei is mentioned, anyone who collects manuscripts, publications, and documents will give a thumbs up to praise this legendary figure in the circle of cultural scavengers.
Mr. Zhao's secret to collecting is to develop "informants" among the major waste stations and cleaners in Yanjing. His most proud Dong Qichang album was obtained through an informant. It is said that an informant found that the old books disposed of by a family were quite valuable. Mr. Zhao felt that this was not an ordinary family, so he told the informant to keep an eye on them and not to miss a single piece of paper. When the family moved, the informant helped him buy all the waste from the family. When Zhao Qingwei saw the album with a yellow rosewood cover among the waste, his eyes were wide open. It turned out to be the original manuscript of Dong Qichang, a great calligrapher and painter in the Ming Dynasty, worth more than one million yuan.
In fact, this is just an interesting story in Mr. Zhao's career as a cultural scavenger. Mr. Zhao has been engaged in cultural scavenging for nearly 30 years. Through this business alone, he has collected tens of millions of pages of various precious manuscripts, including manuscripts of famous scholars such as Lu Xun and Mao Dun.
In the circle of cultural scavengers, Mr. Zhao is the most powerful one.
