Seeing that the end of the year was approaching, Yang Jing, who was almost ready, stayed at his grandfather's house that day. He talked with his grandmother for a long time, and then he and his uncle took his grandfather to the bathhouse for a good bath. He had lunch at his grandfather's house at noon.
After dinner, Yang Jing suddenly remembered that he seemed to have missed one thing, which was the fake "Birds Coming from a Dead Tree" painting that had made his grandfather so depressed that he almost couldn't recover.
My grandfather bought that painting from a swindler in 1986 in exchange for a family jade pendant. Although the painting was later proved to be a fake and not an authentic work by Bada Shanren or Zhu Da, the fact that the painting was imitated so closely is most likely the work of a famous master.
The most likely person is Mr. Zhang Daqian.
Everyone knows that Mr. Daqian was good at imitating other people's paintings during his lifetime. His imitations of Shitao and Zhu Da's paintings were often so realistic that it was difficult for anyone to tell the authenticity of many calligraphy and paintings.
Yang Jing once suspected whether this painting "Birds Coming from a Dead Tree" was an imitation by Mr. Daqian.
Seeing that his grandfather had already taken a nap, Yang Jing secretly took out the painting "Birds Coming from a Dead Tree". After using the Holy Ring to authenticate it, he found that it was indeed a copy by Mr. Daqian.
“‘Birds Coming from a Dead Tree’, 1940, Zhang Daqian.”
This result can be said to be both expected and unexpected.
Yang Jing had already thought that this painting "Birds Coming from a Dead Tree" might be a fake by someone else, and he also thought that it might be a fake by Mr. Daqian, but when this result really appeared, Yang Jing still waved his fist excitedly.
The value of the authentic works of Bada Shanren and Zhu Da is indeed very high, but compared with the paintings of Mr. Daqian, there is still a big gap.
It is well known that Mr. Daqian likes to imitate the calligraphy and paintings of his predecessors, especially those of Shitao and Bada. However, the paintings that are obviously imitated by Mr. Daqian are more valuable than the original works of the original owners.
Like many famous Chinese calligraphers and painters in modern times, Mr. Daqian also started out by copying the calligraphy and paintings of the ancients. From Shitao to Bada Shanren, and to Chen Hongshou, Xu Wei and other calligraphy and painting masters of the Ming and Qing dynasties, they were all objects of Mr. Daqian's copying.
Mr. Daqian imitated Shitao and Bada Shanren’s paintings and calligraphy most authentically. As early as 1930, when he was 31 years old, he imitated Bada Shanren Zhu Da’s “Dry Tree and Two Birds”; in 1936, Mr. Daqian also imitated Bada Shanren’s “Mountain Man and Fish Joy”, and also imitated Bada Shanren’s brushwork and landscapes. Mr. Daqian’s imitation of Bada Shanren’s “Two Birds in Lotus Pond” in 1947 was sold at a high price of 14.95 million yuan at a spring auction in 2013.
This price far exceeds that of Zhu Da's original work.
Mr. Daqian is definitely an expert in imitating Shitao and Bada Shanren, especially in the painting "Bada Shanren and Shitao Collaborative Landscape" that he imitated. He not only captured the essence of the painting style, but also thoroughly studied the details of Bada Shanren and Shitao's behavior and interactions. Even some big collectors at that time, such as Zhang Xueliang and Luo Zhenyu, and many famous appraisers, such as Huang Binhong and Wu Hufan, fell in love with this painting.
From this we can see that Mr. Daqian’s imitations of Bada Shanren and Zhu Da’s calligraphy and painting can only be described in one word - absolutely amazing!
The most important thing is that the paintings of Bada imitated by Daqian have always been of extremely high value. The painting in front of us is a copy of Daqian. If it is authenticated as Daqian's original work, then once it is auctioned, it will definitely be worth eight digits in national currency based on the artistic value of the painting.
When the grandmother saw Yang Jing holding the painting that almost made her fall down and deep in thought, she asked quietly, "Xiao Jing, why are you looking at this painting?"
Hearing what his grandmother said, Yang Jing put the painting away with a smile, and then whispered to his grandmother: "Grandma, do you guess who painted this painting that my grandpa bought that year?" Although his grandmother is eighty years old, her hearing is not bad at all, and she can hear people speaking in a low voice.
When my grandmother heard this, she said angrily, "Who cares who painted it? Anyway, this painting caused your grandfather a lot of trouble back then. It's just a fake painting."
"Grandma, this painting is indeed a copy, but it depends on who copied it. Grandma, if I'm not mistaken, this painting is most likely copied by Mr. Zhang Daqian."
"Zhang Daqian?" Grandma muttered in confusion, then suddenly realized and said, "You said this painting was painted by that Zhang Daqian?"
"Yes, it was painted by Zhang Daqian!" Yang Jing said excitedly, "Even if this painting is a copy of Mr. Daqian, its value is higher than the original. My grandfather seemed to have been cheated back then, but this was a good thing. Grandma, if this painting is auctioned, 10 million yuan is just the starting price!"
"Ah..." After hearing this, grandma was petrified...
PS: I would like to thank "冰冷八度" for the reward of 100.
