Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, is a bit shabby to be honest.
There are no tall buildings here, and most of what you see are wooden houses painted in various colors. Greenland's GDP per capita is not low, exceeding 40,000 US dollars, but why is the capital like this?
Gege asked this question, and Jack quickly gave an answer. "First of all, the people here are like this. We don't like the tension of a big city, and building some high-rise buildings will create that kind of tension in the city." The reason Jack gave was a little hard to accept, but from his expression, it seemed to be true.
"People here have to fight the sea every year, especially in the winter when we go out to catch crabs, which is an extremely dangerous job. Every year, many people become disabled or even lose their lives because of carelessness. Therefore, people here are full of awe for the sea. Every time we come back from the sea, we need a warm, comfortable and stress-free environment to relieve our nervousness. If we go home and see tall buildings everywhere, it will make us collapse." Jack gave a further explanation.
But neither Yang Jing nor Gege could understand what kind of reason this was. Could it be that there was a direct relationship between a good mood and tall buildings?
However, Chris and Lin Dan showed an understanding expression.
Apparently, maybe it's a difference in culture and awareness.
Jack obviously saw the confusion of the two people, smiled, showing his big white teeth, and then gave a reason that everyone could accept - in fact, the reason why we don't build high-rise buildings here has a lot to do with the geological environment here. Most of our area is slate and shale, and it is very difficult and dangerous to build high-rise buildings.
Well, this Inuit guy does have a good gift for speaking, why doesn’t he join an MLM?
However, Jack's eloquence also made the atmosphere better. This guy would make a little joke from time to time, and he could easily talk about the legends of some scenic spots in Nuuk.
"This is the most important cultural venue in Godthab and even in the whole of Greenland - the Katuaq Cultural Center. Since it opened on February 15, 1997, it has gradually become a symbol of our new Greenland nationalism, imagination and potential. Our goal is to build this place into a window connecting our own culture with the outside world." Jack said proudly, pointing to a building with a brown and wavy exterior wall.
This building is not small and is considered a large building in the whole of Nuuk.
Yang Jing asked curiously, "Why is this place called Katuyak? Does this name have any special meaning to you?"
"Yes, the name means 'drumstick' in our Greenlandic language, the kind of drumstick used to beat a war drum." Jack smiled and made a drumming motion. "Since the construction of this cultural center, drama performances, shows and exhibitions are held here every year. Movies are shown every day, Hollywood movies, you know. At the same time, it attracts more than 100,000 tourists every year. Do you want to go in and take a look? It's very nice inside."
Yang Jing and Gege looked at each other. Gege shook her head and said, "Forget it today. We won't leave tomorrow. If we have time, we might take time out tomorrow to visit this great building."
Gege's words made Jack very satisfied, as if praising this place was praising him.
Continuing to walk forward along the not very wide road, Yang Jing and Gege saw many colorful houses along the way. Some of the houses even had many strange but attractive oil paintings on the walls.
Just like this oil painting on the wall of a house, it depicts an Inuit man, staring into the distance with a determined gaze. If it were just a person, the painting would be just average, but what if a creeping, staring polar bear was added under the left hand of the Inuit man?
This painting will immediately become extremely shocking!
If there were only one or two houses like this, people might think that these were some casual graffiti by some art lovers, but as we walked along the way, we could see such oil paintings almost every few distances, which was really surprising.
These oil paintings of various shapes, combined with the colorful colors of the houses here, really make the entire Nuuk look more like a huge oil painting.
As if he could see that Gege was shocked by the painting, Jack asked, "I've seen many paintings like this along the way. What do you think?"
Gege nodded and said, "It's very beautiful and shocking. Just like this painting, it's very real, so real that it's shocking. Jack, is this painting real? Or is it just the imagination of those artists?"
Jack shook his head and said, "No, this painting depicts a real event. It was created a few years ago by an artist named Van Helten. It is said that this painting was taken based on an old photo taken in 1906. This painting tells the story of a local hunter who settled in Godthob under the arrangement of the government."
After a pause, Jack continued, "In fact, as you have seen along the way, we have many such murals here, and the houses here are also colorful. In fact, this is a project we are promoting in Gotthaub to promote the city's image, called 'Colorful Nuuk', and our residents here like this project very much. If you have the opportunity to visit my home, you will see the mural that my little daughter and my son completed together..."
