Chapter 455: Fierce Bird

“There are quite a lot of birds here.”

"Yeah, in the summer, many migratory birds come here to breed. Anyway, I've seen enough."

"Hey, why is there a statue here?" Yang Jing did not participate in the conversation between the two ladies, but his attention was soon attracted by a statue in the center of the town square.

Below the statue is a stone platform more than one meter high and made of five pieces of marble more than ten centimeters thick. On the stone platform is a black bust statue.

This statue is a bit similar to the "Venus de Milo", both of which have no arms, only the part from the chest upwards. However, compared to the Venus de Milo, this statue is a bit scary.

The statue is a man with a furry hood, pursing his lips, frowning, staring at the North Pole, with a very serious expression. The tall hooked nose is particularly eye-catching, and combined with the overall black color, it makes people, especially Chinese people, feel like they have seen a ghost.

Gege was also shocked. It was obvious that this sculpture style of foreigners was not suitable for the Chinese people's taste.

However, He Rui respectfully took off her hood and bowed slightly to the statue.

Seeing He Rui being so respectful to the statue, Yang Jing and Gege subconsciously followed suit.

He Rui shrugged and said, "This guy is the most famous person here. He is very famous in Norway and even the whole world. This statue is of Ronald Amundsen. Anyone who is familiar with the South Pole and the North Pole will take off their hats or bow when they come here. Mr. Amundsen really deserves the respect of so many people."

He Rui pointed to the other two people who came to salute, and continued to explain in a low voice: "Mr. Amundsen is a legend in the history of human exploration. He is a person who is willing to accept challenges throughout his life. On December 14, 1911, he reached the South Pole and stayed there for 3 days. On May 11, 1926, two days after American Richard Byrd flew over the North Pole, Amundsen and his companion Ellsworth took an airship, took off from here, flew over the North Pole, and arrived at Cape Barrow, Alaska. It took only 27 hours and the journey was 5,456 kilometers. From then on, Mr. Amundsen became the first true bipolar hero in human history."

He Rui sighed again, "It's a pity that on June 3, 1928, Amundsen took off from here to rescue his friend, and then disappeared in the Arctic sky. No one knows where his soul went. This is a tragic legend of mankind conquering nature."

He Rui pointed to the tall tower beside the fjord and said, "Do you see that iron tower? It's not a communication tower, but a tower used to tie up airships. It was on that tower that Mr. Amundsen and his companions boarded the hot air balloon and crossed the North Pole."

Yang Jing and Gege put their hands on the pergola and looked in the direction that He Rui pointed. They could vaguely see a tall iron tower. The iron tower was a little far from here.

After saying this, He Rui quickened her pace. It was obvious that this somewhat scary-looking statue was very much to He Rui's taste, and she obviously didn't want to say much more about this legendary figure.

He Rui pointed at some buildings while walking and said, "This building with red walls and red roof is the Norwegian Arctic Research Station, and the building with yellow walls is the Indian Arctic Research Station. Do you see the building with a lot of glass? That's our 'greenhouse', where a lot of green vegetables are grown using soilless technology. And over there, that's the New Alesund Post Office, the northernmost post office in the world. Next to it is a shop and a bar. If you two have time, you can send some postcards to your friends at the post office, or you can go to the bar to relax..."

He Rui introduced almost all the buildings in Ny-Ålesund. When they reached the southeast corner of Ny-Ålesund, He Rui said, "Our Yellow River Station also has red walls and red roofs, but our research station is two-story and the largest of all the polar research stations in Ny-Ålesund. That's our Yellow River Station, and next to it are the Korean Station and the French Station."

In front of us, there are two almost identical two-story buildings. The walls and roofs are painted crimson. However, in front of the gate of the small red building on the south side, there are two white marble lions squatting. You can tell at a glance that they are stone lions from China.

Sure enough, after reaching the door, Yang Jing and Gege saw a sign on the wall behind the stone lion on the left. The sign was not big, with a pattern of the blue Arctic Ocean painted on it. Below the pattern were a few red Chinese characters - China Arctic Yellow River Station.

PS: I would like to thank "爱葬死海" for the reward of 100.
