Chapter 5: Castle

It is indeed an ancient castle that has been passed down for nearly five hundred years.

Valdi Castle stands on a small hill next to the Fishguard Port. Although the hill is not high, it is the highest area around Fishguard. The castle stands on the top of the hill, facing the sea, and it is extremely imposing.

In fact, when Vardi's ancestors decided to build the castle here, it was to guard against the Dutch Navy and even the elusive pirates.

The seventeenth century was a critical moment for European countries to compete for the Atlantic Ocean. Whether it was the Anglo-Dutch War, the Dutch-Spanish War or the Anglo-Spanish War, in that turbulent era, several coastal countries fought to the death in order to completely control the Atlantic Ocean.

Coupled with the rampant pirates of that era, it can be said that Britain in that era was actually at the center of a big vortex.

The ancestors of the Vardy family were made barons by Charles II, and of course they took on the responsibility of defending the homeland.

Therefore, the ancestors of the Vardi family built this castle with obvious Norman style on this hill near the port of Fishguard. Fishguard is the base of the Vardi family and also the old nest of the Vardi family, so the castle was naturally built here.

Although the hill is not very high, it covers a large area. The Valdi Castle stands on the top of the hill.

This castle, which was obviously built for military purposes, has a strong Norman style, which is a kind of Roman style. Compared with the gorgeous Gothic style, the Norman-style castle is obviously more suitable for military purposes.

The castle covers a very large area. In order to build the castle, almost the entire top of the hill was flattened. And in order to better defend it, the castle is not one-story, but divided into three floors.

Starting from the middle of the mountain, there is a circle of tall and thick city walls. The gray-white city walls are twenty feet high and ten feet thick. They are made of huge granite. Although they have experienced nearly five hundred years of wind and rain, they still give people a feeling of being as heavy as a mountain.

After this city wall, there is another circle of slightly shorter walls inside, and the two walls constitute the outer courtyard area of the entire castle.

Back then, this circular outer courtyard area could be used to station troops. Once a war broke out, the soldiers between the two city walls could quickly climb the outer wall to resist the attack of the powerful enemy.

However, the outer courtyard that was used to station troops has now become an area full of birdsong and flowers. Yang Jing and Guo Xiaoxiang even saw a small golf course along the way...

After passing the shorter wall in the middle, you will enter the real core of the castle.

In the center of the castle, there is a main castle also built of granite, covering an area of 2,000 square meters. The castle has five floors, about 60 feet high, and is shaped like a Chinese character "concave".

Next to the main castle, there is a seventy-foot-high tower, and next to the main castle there is a Gothic chapel.

"This castle covers a total area of thirty acres. Even in the whole of Britain, it is one of the largest castles." Butler was obviously very familiar with the castle, or he had done more thorough preparations.

"It's just that this castle has belonged to the Vardi family since the day it was built, so the outside world doesn't know much about it. It was only after I accepted the commission and came here that I fully understood how great this castle is." Butler whispered to Yang Jing and Guo Xiaoxiang about some things in the castle, while waving his fist excitedly.

Just as Butler said, this castle is truly worthy of the word "great". Thirty acres of land, that's a full 120,000 square meters, more than 180 acres! This area alone is enough to shock most people.

The inner courtyard of the castle is kept very clean. Although the Valdi family no longer plans to live in this castle, there are still service staff to maintain the daily hygiene of the castle.

Butler led Yang Jing and Guo Xiaoxiang into the main castle. Yang Jing and Guo Xiaoxiang were so shocked by the magnificent architectural structure inside the main castle that they were speechless for a long time.

However, the Vardi family obviously did not plan to continue living here, because many decorations in the main castle had been taken down, and some furniture were piled together, waiting for the Vardi family to pull out these valuable decorations and furniture.

Butler was obviously a person who loved castles very much. After seeing these things, he stopped again, and an indescribable look appeared on his face, with a hint of sadness.

Shaking his head, Butler led Yang Jing and the others up the stairs. As they went up the stairs, Butler whispered, "What a pity! If Baron William Vardy's investment hadn't failed, his family could still enjoy this beautiful castle."

Yang Jing asked curiously: "What exactly does Baron Valdi do? How can he lose this castle if his investment fails?"

Butler said: "The Vardy family's business is huge, and there are some things I don't know very well. But there is one thing I know, does IKEA in Sweden know?"

Yang Jing and Guo Xiaoxiang nodded. IKEA is the world's largest furniture retailer and a very famous company.

"Mr. Kamprad, the founder of IKEA, has a very good relationship with Baron William Vardy's grandfather. To be precise, when Mr. Kamprad founded IKEA, Baron William Vardy's grandfather, Baron William the Elder, was one of the main investors of IKEA. In other words, the Vardy family is currently the largest individual shareholder of IKEA..."
