Usually when we describe a city’s good geographical location, we use words like “facing the sea and backed by mountains” or “surrounded by mountains and rivers”.
Rabaul is a city that is absolutely surrounded by mountains and rivers, with its back to the mountains and the sea in front. If you don't know it, you will definitely think that this city is so beautiful. In fact, if you don't consider what mountain Rabaul is based on, this city is definitely a very beautiful city.
But unfortunately, no one knows what the Germans were thinking at the time. Why did they build the city on a huge, unpredictable bomb?
It is absolutely true that this city is located on a sporadic bomb, because within a radius of ten kilometers centered on this city, there are a total of six volcanoes, four of which have not erupted for a long time, but among these six volcanoes, two are still active volcanoes!
The two active volcanoes are very close to each other, only 25 kilometers away, with Vulcan to the north and Tavuru to the south. Of the two volcanoes, Tavuru is the farthest from Rabaul, with a straight-line distance of only six kilometers.
It is difficult for people who have not seen the power of a volcanic eruption to imagine how dangerous a volcano is when it erupts. If nothing else, the supersonic debris flow alone is enough to kill all living things within the range covered by the debris flow. If volcanic ash is included, it will be even more terrible.
In 1937, the two volcanoes erupted simultaneously, resulting in the death of nearly 600 people in Rabaul. Rabaul, then the capital of Guinea, was forced to move its capital to Lae.
In 1994, the eruption of Mount Tavuru dealt a devastating blow to the city. Although the city was not as unlucky as Pompeii and was completely destroyed, the volcanic ash from the eruption alone destroyed more than 80% of the city's buildings.
The eruption also caused Rabaul to completely lose its status as the capital of East Britain Province.
Now, after 24 years, although the Tavuru volcano has not erupted again, the city has regained its vitality. However, if Yang Jing did not want to see with his own eyes this military base city that was turned into an iron barrel by the Japanese during the Pacific War in World War II, and if he did not have the restricted time and space travel skills that could avoid most disasters, he would not be willing to stop here.
Who knows when Mount Tavuru will cough again? A volcano this large, even a slight cough, is enough to bring a devastating disaster to the city.
A gentleman does not stand under a dangerous wall, Yang Jing understands this point quite well.
Rabaul is still very beautiful without the harassment of volcanoes. Although the city was destroyed by a volcano once 24 years ago, it has now stood up again tenaciously.
The city is not very big. To the north is the Korere volcano, but this volcano is a dead volcano, and to the south is the Simpson Bay.
The city was originally not there. There were large buildings in the north and east of Simpson Bay, especially in the east of the bay, which was the former main urban area of Rabaul. During World War II, the eastern urban area of Rabaul even extended southward along the bay to the end of the peninsula. The eastern urban area alone was more than twice as large as the northern urban area.
Unfortunately, the eastern half of the city has now been completely buried under volcanic ash, and the many military fortresses built by the Japanese here have also been completely buried under the thick volcanic ash.
More than 20 years are not enough for the city to fully recover. Now only the northern city area of Rabaul has recovered. The Raocheng area, which originally had a population of about 150,000, now has less than 5,000 residents.
There are no very tall buildings in the city. The tallest buildings are just a few five- or six-story buildings. The other buildings are mostly one- or two-story residential houses.
The city is very quiet, full of a unique calmness. After all, this city has experienced two nearly devastating volcanic eruptions, but it still persevered. This kind of strength gives the city a special charm.
You don’t need much, just stand on the streets of this city and feel it quietly, and you can feel the tenacity in the blood of this city.
Guo Dabao was tired of the boat ride, so after getting off the boat, he went directly to the hotel he had booked in advance, accompanied by his bodyguards. No matter how luxurious a super yacht is, it is not as safe as land!
However, Yang Jing and Guo Xiang were very excited. They looked at the time and saw that there were at least two hours left until dinner, so accompanied by Chris and Adrian, they prepared to go and take a look at the city area buried by volcanic ash.
There are no taxis on the streets, but there are public bicycles similar to Mobike in China, but these bicycles are not paid by mobile phone, but are managed by special managers. You only need to pay a deposit of 50 kina to the manager to ride a bicycle.
Of course, there is a fee for renting this kind of bicycle, which is one kina per hour.
Kina is the official currency of Papua New Guinea, and 1 kina is equivalent to about 25 yuan. If we look at it this way, the cost of public bicycles in Papua New Guinea is much more expensive than in China.
However, neither Yang Jing nor Guo Xiang had ridden a bicycle for a long time. Now was not the time when they were in London, so after seeing the public bicycle rental, the two of them rented four bicycles tacitly. One for each of them, and one for each of the two bodyguards.
The four men, one was a big boss with a net worth of billions of dollars, one was a genuine rich second generation, and the other had two powerful bodyguards armed with guns. They just rode their bicycles all the way to the East City buried in volcanic ash.
