Chapter 895 Basque Cart (Happy New Year!)

With Yang Jing's words, Comrade Xiao Wang immediately became a tour guide. However, there was no need to drive his broken pickup truck, as Yang Jing and his team had four cars, plus Comrade Xiao Wang, they could definitely drive it.

So Xiao Wang Zhizhu squeezed Bruno into another car, and he sat in the co-pilot seat of Yang Jing's car. Of course, this car also became the lead car in the convoy.

Walk less than a kilometer north from the casino hotel and you will return to Qiaotou Market, then cross the border checkpoint and enter Brazil again from the Friendship Bridge.

Although Paraguay also borders Argentina, there is no bridge connecting Paraguay and Argentina near Oriental City. Therefore, if you want to enter Argentina from Oriental City, you must pass through Foz do Iguaçu in Brazil, and then cross the Tancredo Neves Bridge on the Iguazú River between Foz do Iguaçu and Porto Iguaçu in Argentina before you can enter Argentina.

After crossing the Friendship Bridge, drive east along Highway 277 for about three kilometers, then go directly south to Paraná Avenue, then walk south for another four kilometers and turn into Great Falls Avenue, and finally turn into South Market Avenue, and then pass the border checkpoint on that avenue.

The Southern Market Avenue is a fully enclosed highway that connects Brazil and Argentina through the Tancredo Neves Bridge built over the Iguazu River. The border checkpoints at both ends of the highway are the entrances and exits of this enclosed highway.

After passing the border checkpoint on the Argentine side, the convoy began to wander around the city under the command of Comrade Xiao Wang. Because the border checkpoint was on the eastern outskirts of Puerto Iguazú, and the famous "Three Countries at a Glance" viewing platform was in the northwest corner of the city, they needed to cross the entire Puerto Iguazú.

However, the appearance of Porto Iguazú is much better than Foz do Iguazú in Brazil to the north and Ciudad Oriental in Paraguay to the west. This city is not so noisy, but more peaceful.

Even though you can see groups of tourists from time to time, this city gives people a more relaxed feeling.

It took more than ten minutes for the convoy to arrive at Iguazú Boulevard on the south bank of the Iguazú River. This avenue is a famous tourist avenue in Porto Iguazú. To the east of the avenue is the Porto Iguazú wharf, and to the west is the "Three Countries at a Glance" tourist square.

There are many murals painted on the cement walls on both sides of the entire Iguazú Avenue. The paintings include portraits of famous Argentine figures, as well as some local legends and stories.

On the side of the avenue near the viewing square, Yang Jing and his team found a very interesting sculpture. This sculpture is a white marble humanoid sculpture pushing a yellow cart with a blue blanket roll on it. Behind the sculpture, there is a cement wall with red lines drawn on it, which are obviously the routes within the borders of Argentina.

This sculpture aroused the curiosity of Yang Jing and Gege. They stopped the car and got out to see the sculpture.

Seeing that Yang Jing and his wife were very interested in the sculpture, Comrade Xiao Wang began to introduce the sculpture to them.

"Brother Yang, sister-in-law, this sculpture is the famous 'Basque Cart' sculpture and the route that Lalreni Ugarte used to walk with his cart."

"Basque cart? Marching on foot? What does this mean?" Gege asked in confusion.

Xiao Wang said, "Sister-in-law, although the location of this sculpture is not very eye-catching, the owner of this sculpture is very famous in Argentina and even in the whole of South America."

After a pause, Xiao Wang continued to explain: "The owner of this sculpture is named Guillermo Isidoro Larreni Ugarte. He was born on November 27, 1885 in Pamplona, Spain. He was a Basque. In 1900, when he was only 15 years old, he came to Buenos Aires. He was a sailor at first, and later went to live in Patagonia, Argentina. In 1935, he made a bet with his friends, which changed his life and made him a strange and legendary figure in Argentina. His bet was about a wheelbarrow. On March 25, 1935, he loaded a wheelbarrow with 130 kilograms of travel supplies, mainly including folding beds, mattresses and bedspreads, as well as kitchen utensils, heaters and other tools needed for travel, and began to push the wheelbarrow on his first long-distance hike, starting from the small town of Luis Piedra Buena in Santa Cruz Province, Argentina, and arriving in the capital Buenos Aires fourteen months later. After arriving in Buenos Aires, his reputation soared, thereby improving the reputation of Basque and Navarre immigrants in Argentina.

"Larreñi Ugarte made four wheelbarrow hikes in his life. The second was from Colonel Pringles in Buenos Aires Province to La Paz in Bolivia between 1936 and 1938. The third was from Villa María in Cordoba to Santiago, Chile in 1943. The last wheelbarrow hike was from Trenque Lauque in Buenos Aires to Iguazú National Park, which ended in 1949. Puerto Iguazú was the last place of residence for Larreñi Ugarte, and he died in Puerto Iguazú on June 9, 1964."

After hearing Xiao Wang's explanation, Yang Jing and Gege couldn't help but look at each other, and they both noticed the admiration in each other's eyes.

The owner of this seemingly inconspicuous sculpture actually performed such a feat. Ugarte is definitely a hero!

PS: I would like to thank “很懒的鱼” for the reward of 100!
