Two small fish
It wouldn't be surprising if anyone fell in love with my brother, including me, his younger brother.
My parents said that once when my brother was sick, they took him to the hospital. At the door, they saw me squinting in a bundle. The older generation has such soft hearts; my dad picked me up and put me in his arms, and that's how I found a home.
Su Yu is three years older than me. I heard from my neighbor that it snowed heavily the day my mother was about to give birth. My father was working away from home and couldn't come back, so my mother took a taxi to the hospital by herself to give birth to my brother.
I once saw online that the first person a child encounters at birth can affect their appearance. When the doctor carried my brother out of the delivery room, my mom's group of fashionable girlfriends were all waiting at the door.
That's probably why my brother is good-looking.
My parents weren't well-educated, so they just randomly picked a character from the dictionary and named my brother. Later, they were equally uneducated and named me "Yu." There was no other reason; they just followed my brother's name. You know, their lack of education is a good thing—it makes my name sound like a couple's name with Su Yu's.
"Desire" refers to desire, ambition, and greed.
This character is too mundane; I didn't understand it when I was little. Even now that I'm older, people always assume my brother's name is the "jade" in jade artifacts. I still don't understand.
"Thinking of the gentleman, his gentleness is like jade."
Warm, pure, and resilient. Thinking about it now, it really does suit my brother. My mother once took my brother and me to a museum. The history was so profound that I didn't understand it, but I knew that there was a stone that shone brightly under the lights and was called "jade".
Bai Jie, Wen Jing, hmm... she can indeed be compared to my brother.
When Su was in third grade, I had just started elementary school.
The sun was blazing on the first day of school. Su Yu held up a tiny Ultraman umbrella and held me in his arms. How tall can a little kid be? He squeezed and jostled around like that and steadily carried me to the classroom.
After school, he would even use his allowance to bring me a small pudding. My brother has always been good at getting along with people since we were little.
My brother helped me use the toilet at my new school for the first time; I fell down when I ran into my brother's class; my brother saved up money to buy me my first fountain pen; and my brother and I won our first certificate for "parent-child jump rope" at the sports meet.
So my brother and I always took it for granted that we would do things together, and of course, only I had ever thought of such an unreasonable idea.
I'm lost.
I remember the first time I went to the supermarket with my mom and Su Yu, an old friend suddenly appeared out of nowhere. My mom got so engrossed in talking about old times in the south of the city that she forgot everything else. She told Su Yu to push me around in the shopping cart and not to buy any junk food.
With my brother's height of only half, I could easily kick him to the ground with one kick. But I didn't; I'm too busy doting on him to care for him...
The younger brother's feelings for his older brother—what was it again, respect and affection? I don't know.
When nature calls, I patted Su Yu's head and told him I needed to pee. He struggled to pull me off and led me to the restroom, watching the shopping cart from outside. The restroom was poorly designed; it had three doors, and I couldn't tell which way was which. I just went straight for the brightest door.
"Su Yu... Su Yu?" That was my brother looking for me. He later told me that he had been waiting for about twenty minutes and was really scared. He called my name with a choked voice, and I almost peed my pants.
Just kidding, I was really scared, but I'm exaggerating when I said I peed myself.
He knocked on each door, calling me Su Yu, calling me Yu Yu. I had already run far away.
There were no adults around, and the child was too conspicuous in such a big supermarket. Luckily, a kind woman handing out flyers saw I was alone and led me to the entrance. She asked me to say my name so she could find my parents.
"Little Su Yu, your younger brother Su Yu is looking for you. If you hear this announcement, please come to the Lost and Found office at door A2 on the first floor."
Oh, I'm the lost item. My brother lost me?
Before I could finish slurping up a candied hawthorn, I saw my brother and mom running over in a chaotic mess. Before my mom could slap me, my brother's tears started flowing. He hugged me tightly, his tears and snot soaking my shoulder.
The slap landed accidentally on his back.
My mom is funny too. I guess the scene was too touching, because I watched as she took out her phone, covered her mouth and laughed while taking pictures of us in a circle.
Give me a close-up shot.
My brother let go of me after he'd cried enough. The fresh air brought me back to my senses, and I bit off a piece of candied hawthorn and gave it to him. There were still my teeth marks on the candy shell. My brother glanced at it and started crying again.
Su Yuzhen cries easily.
The candied hawthorn I ate was sweet, while his was probably sweet and savory.
On the way home, my brother gripped my hand tightly, so tightly that I didn't dare to breathe. He was sniffling, which made me, a little kid, feel a bit off.
My parents have always been fair to my brother and me. Everything is always exactly the same. If they can't divide it properly, they just wash their hands of the matter and let us decide how to divide it ourselves.
Su Yu always gives me the extra portion; there's never any "I don't like it" drama. All I see is my brother's genuine love for me.
My brother has been so adorable since he was little. Whenever I think of him anxiously running around, I want to kiss him, kiss him now, and kiss him anxiously looking for me. My brother is adorable no matter what.
Elementary school days were so long... I mean, the year my brother graduated.
Yearbooks. These are fun things; I see upperclassmen coming and going from the office every day in class, asking teachers to write things in them.
It's pointless; everyone's just trying to curry favor with the teacher.
Holy crap, my brother went too.
I need to write one too; I need to ask my brother for one.
So, in a class full of bespectacled kids, I, a little brat, stood out. I huffed and puffed my way up to the fourth floor, still catching my breath, when I saw my brother holding a bunch of colorful papers, and two girls were about to give them to him.
"elder brother!"
Su Yu was startled and turned her head to see me, who was almost exhausted on the stairs.
"Yu Yu, what brings you here? Is something the matter?"
My brother tucked the pile of papers under his arm and rushed over to help me.
"Me too...I want one too...that yearbook...I want yours." My brother took out a tissue from his pocket to wipe my sweat.
He always carries paper with him. It was originally prepared for me when I was little, and it became a habit that he can't break.
"But my brother doesn't have any," Su Yu said apologetically as she smoothed my hair.
"Hey, I'll give it to you! Su Yu, you and your brother should both write!" The girl next to her pulled out a blue and a green card from the exquisite wooden box.
Su Yu took the blue one.
Got it, my brother likes blue.
By the time I brought that yearbook home, it was already crumpled. My brother pulled out that pile of papers after he finished tutoring me with my homework.
This is truly eye-opening! There are even heart-shaped ones?
...
How can someone be so compassionate?!
I don't understand love, but I do know that loving someone is an expression of liking someone.
Su Yu wrote in her yearbook under the desk lamp until seven or eight o'clock. My brother's handwriting is really beautiful, delicate and graceful, just like him.
The saying "Your handwriting reflects your personality" is usually used to tease people with bad handwriting, but for my brother it's a compliment.
After sneaking a peek, I put the TV on the coffee table and prepared to write my piece.
I didn't recognize the characters, so I asked Su Yu to help me with the pinyin.
Once the initial excitement wears off, it loses its appeal.
So I filled in "Su Yu" for all the questions in that yearbook.
I refolded the yearbook and put it in the envelope, then went to bed. We have bunk beds; usually, my brother sleeps on top and I sleep on the bottom. Generally, my brother and I both sleep on the bottom because he's worried about my safety climbing the ladder.
I slept soundly until dawn.
"Yu Yu, give me your yearbook, I'll take it to you."
I took it out of my Chinese textbook and handed it to my brother.
Happy graduation! Our family of four took photos together in our classroom and at the school gate, and I also begged my parents to take a separate photo of me and my brother.
My brother's class, my class, the office, the stairwell, the men's restroom, the playground, the flowerbeds, the cultural wall, the plantation, the school gate...
That day, my dad, that fat man, was sweating profusely from spinning me around, and my face was flushed, but my brother was still all smiles.
"You're staying for another three years, why are you filming so much now?"
Su asked me on her way home.
"But you're not here, so it's different, you idiot."
Then my brother became a proud junior high school student.
"Boarding school! Isn't my brother coming back to live here?"
I stared at my mother in disbelief and asked her, and she gave me an affirmative answer.
So every week I pestered my dad to pick up Su Yu. In the first year of junior high, we were let out once a week; in the second year, once every two weeks; in the third year…
My brother said it's a two-week break, but after calculating, it's practically once a month. That's too much! I won't be able to remember all the fun things that happen to me every day for that long. How can I share them with him?!
I started writing a diary.
A diary won't work; I'm having so much fun all day and I can't remember anything.
I bought a small notebook, about the size of my palm, and I write down everything that happens.
If there are pockets, put them in your pockets; if there are no pockets, tie them to your waistband.
When Su Yu returned home, I had collected two thick notebooks. They contained everything, big and small. When my brother returned to school, I secretly slipped them into the umbrella compartment on the side of his backpack.
A few days later, Su Yu called her mother, and I eavesdropped while doing my homework. A little while later, my mother came and closed the door.
"Hey, Su Yu, you miss your brother that much? You even wrote that stuff."
My mom came over again and asked me to say a few words to my brother.
"Is that Yu Yu? I saw those two notebooks. It seems like your school life is much more interesting than mine. Sixth grade must have been busy, right? Don't overwork yourself. I've scouted out a good path for you. Middle school is a lot of fun too."
My nose started to sting whenever I heard my brother's voice. I don't know why.
"Brother, you're the one who needs to take care of yourself. I heard that the final year of junior high is crucial, and I'm afraid writing that will disturb your studies. I... I also need to prepare for the junior high entrance exam."
Tears welled up in my eyes, but when I saw my mom take out her phone again, I managed to hold them back.
"No, Yu Yu's daily life stories are really interesting. I read them for a while every night after I finish reading my book. Don't put too much pressure on yourself when you go to junior high school. I'll be here waiting for you."
He didn't tell me I was in the first year of junior high and he was about to graduate. That's awful.
After careful planning, I demonstrated extraordinary effort when I first entered junior high school.
Su Yu, who skipped a grade, is now a second-year junior high school student.
My brother doesn't want to stay in the county to attend high school; he wants to go back to the city.
He didn't reach the cutoff score for a regular high school in the city in his first year of high school, so he had to repeat a year.
Seeing that he was determined, his parents decided to support him.
That means Su Yu and I took the high school entrance exam in the same year!
