Chapter 136 Arguing
Besides studying, Jinran spends all her time happily dating her boyfriend. Occasionally, she even goes back to Gu Siyan's house for dinner.
Whenever he runs into Tuantuan, he proudly declares, "Look, this is my masterpiece."
Gu Siyan would always beg for mercy and shower him with compliments.
That day, while they were having dinner at the Gu family home, Professor Gu said to Jinran, "There's a private internal appraisal meeting tomorrow. Come with me to take a look. I got this through Old Wang's connections."
Jinran shuddered when she heard it was Professor Wang; she admitted it was a lingering effect, a fear of being controlled.
But out of curiosity, I agreed anyway.
Gu Siyan said understandingly, "I'll go with you tomorrow. I can drive you there."
Professor Gu wasn't having any of it and said directly, "You can bring it, but you can't go in. There's no place for you. Old Wang had to swallow his pride to get our seats."
Gu Siyan asked directly, "Grandpa, why don't you not go? I'll go in your place."
Professor Gu glared at him, his beard bristling. "Are you even speaking human language? What are you looking at? What do you know? Do you think antiques are rechargeable?"
Jinran was so amused that she laughed so hard she hiccuped.
Seeing Gu Siyan speechless after being rebuked, Grandma Gu and Gu's mother laughed along with Jinran.
Professor Gu then said kindly to Jinran, "To attend this appraisal meeting, you need to bring one of your own private collection items. I have one here, I've prepared it for you. But you can't make a fuss about it, you have to be careful, everyone attending is a Hong Kong businessman."
Jinran asked curiously, "Grandpa Gu, what do you have? And as for antiques, I have some too."
Professor Gu said confidently, "Mine is amazing. It's a calligraphy copybook from the Ming Dynasty, my most prized possession. It's more than enough for the two of us. Do you have any? What do you have?"
Jinran thought for a moment and said, "I'll go back and look through them. I have quite a few."
Professor Gu didn't pay any attention.
Gu Siyan escorted Jinran back to her dormitory and said to her on the way, "I'll pick you up tomorrow morning, take you out for breakfast, and then we'll pick up Grandpa."
Jinran was preoccupied and gave a perfunctory "okay".
Gu Siyan pinched Jinran's cheek and asked irritably, "What are you thinking about? More important than your boyfriend?"
"There's no comparison, okay?"
Gu Siyan increased the pressure, and Jinran immediately said obsequiously, "You are my most important baby. There is no one else."
Gu Siyan then smiled.
Jinran sighed. Sure enough, being in love only slows down her work. She still has to coax her; it's exhausting.
Jinran said goodbye to Gu Jiaojiao and returned to her dormitory.
After washing up, she quietly lay back on the bed, still wondering what would be suitable. She was quite certain that the second and third floors of the palace were filled with antiques, but none of them were documented; that is, they were items not recorded in history.
Jinran realized that the items Old Mo had given her weren't top-tier; in other words, they weren't collector's items. Taking them out in front of experts would be embarrassing.
Something to fool ordinary people.
Jinran was lost in thought when she heard envious and flattering voices coming from the dormitory, along with a conversation between two people. Upon closer listening, she realized it was Chen Feng and Feng Lijuan.
But Jinran couldn't shake the feeling that the tone of voice was off. Curious, Jinran pulled back the curtain to see what was going on, and lo and behold, everyone in the dorm was there, watching Feng Lijuan try on clothes.
Chen Feng said enviously, "Lijuan, did your boyfriend buy this for you? This dress is so beautiful, it must be very expensive!"
Feng Lijuan proudly stated, "He comes from a good family, but he's not rich. He can't compare to Jinran's boyfriend."
Jinran raised an eyebrow but didn't say anything. Her boyfriend was rich and wanted to give her everything. Was she showing off?
Chen Feng looked at Jin Ran and didn't say anything harsh, but she did learn the trick of praising one person while belittling another.
Finally, she added, "Lijuan, when are you going to introduce us to everyone? We're practically your family now. You have to treat us to a meal!"
Feng Lijuan, flattered, said directly, "Then let's go to the state-run restaurant for a meal tomorrow. Jinran, you should come too, bring your boyfriend along. Don't be shy."
Jinran said sympathetically to Feng Lijuan, who had a big head, "My boyfriend and I have something to do tomorrow, you guys go ahead, I won't go."
Chen Feng smiled weakly and said, "That's true. You were the first in our dorm to date, but it was Lijuan who treated everyone to dinner. You probably felt embarrassed to go, right?"
Jinran chuckled and said, "Are we familiar? I'm afraid I'll get indigestion if I invite you to dinner. Wake up! Stop freeloading. If you keep doing this, what if you can't find someone to take the blame later? Then my meal will have been a waste, and you'll have really eaten for nothing. I don't do business at a loss."
Chen Feng was so angry she wanted to bite her teeth, but she didn't know what to say. She just said, "You're so quick-witted. With a personality like yours, you'll regret it someday."
Jinran smiled smugly, then said in a tone that was sure to infuriate people, "I can't cry, but I've already thought of the tune for you to cry. I'll play it for you then. I'm an expert at playing the suona."
