Chapter 70 The Clueless Aunt

Chapter 70 The Clueless Aunt

On the day of the engagement, Shen's father and Wang Cuifen arrived early, while Jinran slept until she naturally woke up before going.

Because Meng Fan was an educated youth sent to the countryside, the banquet was all held at his aunt's house. When Jinran arrived, she saw her aunt blocking the door. She would only greet someone with a smile if the things they brought were presentable.

Jinran witnessed someone bring vegetables they had grown themselves and a few eggs to the engagement banquet, only to be ridiculed by her aunt for a long time. Luckily, the argument didn't escalate.

Jinran was speechless. This was definitely inviting hatred. That's how it is in the village. Not many people spend money. It's mostly eggs, grain, and whatever they have at home. Some bring more, some bring less, but the fact that people come to show their support is a favor.

Jinran breathed a sigh of relief; thankfully, the family had separated.

The eldest aunt finally noticed Jinran and immediately turned her attention to her, saying, "Have you had enough sleep? Nini, it's not that I'm criticizing you, but you're such a spoiled child, you're so lazy."

Jinran thought, "I wonder what color burlap sack my aunt likes!"

She pretended not to hear and went inside to find her mother, asking her to put the matter of beating her aunt on the agenda.

After listening to Jinran's complaint, Wang Cuifen, who was helping in the kitchen, comforted her, saying, "Wait for your mother to get revenge for you!"

Jinran nodded obediently.

Some of the women who were helping out teased Jinran, saying, "It's better for the girl to stay with her mother. I see Nini managing the house so well, like a little adult. She does more work than I have for decades! And she knows how to be filial to her elders. It's really rare."

Wang Cuifen loved hearing others praise Jinran. She chimed in, "Who says otherwise? My Nini is just so sensible, she never gives us any trouble."

Jinran's face flushed red from the praise, but her eyes sparkled. It wasn't that she was being modest; she could listen to such straightforward praise for a whole day and night without getting sleepy.

Jinran was kicked out, and her mother told her to go play with Dahong, saying that they didn't need her there.

Just as Jinran came out of the house, she saw Da Hong's family arrive. Da Hong greeted Jinran loudly upon seeing her.

“Nini, let’s go catch fish at the river in the next village this afternoon! I’ve already asked around, and my uncle lives there. If we catch any, he said he’ll cook them for us.”

Jinran nodded in agreement, indicating that she would participate.

Wang Dali said disdainfully, "You guys should read more books when you have nothing to do. All you do is play. If you don't get into high school, I'd like to see where you'll go to cry."

Da Hong said directly, "Go cry at my grandfather's grave. I can find the tune there."

Wang Dali was so angry at Da Hong that she snorted and left.

Da Hong said unhappily, "I hate her. She acts like I'm an idiot, like I'll eat shit if I don't listen to her. Besides, my second sister changed her name. She said her original name was vulgar, so she changed it to Wang Li. I don't see what's wrong with it. Da Li is so much better. It sounds so powerful."

Jinran said, ".............." She's siding with Wang Dali this time. Da Hong is somewhat related to Hu Chaochao.

"Da Hong, your sister is right, you still need to work hard in your studies."

Da Hong nodded perfunctorily, "Let's talk about it tomorrow. We're going fishing this afternoon, don't spoil the fun."

That works too!

So Jinran happily discussed with Dahong how to catch fish.

The engagement banquet was announced to begin soon after. In rural areas, an engagement banquet is simply a gathering of people to eat together and to formally acknowledge the couple's status. In reality, it's not much different from a wedding; it's just a way to show that the bride is valued.

Shen Yanhong was dressed in a proper red shirt and black trousers, and neatly combed her hair into a bun.

She must have just put on some simple makeup, which made her look much prettier.

Meng Fan was dressed in a white shirt and black pants, looking handsome and extraordinary. After all, he was the male lead. Jin Ran noticed that quite a few girls in the village were secretly looking at him and blushing.

Da Hong said loudly in Jin Ran's ear, "When they serve meat dishes later, I'll stand up and block them, and you can risk your life to put them into our bowls."

Jinran: “…........” The bright red is truly a unique kind of firework!

"Don't take this lightly. I've already checked everything. Our spot is right by the serving area, so it'll be easy for us to get our hands on the food."

Jinran exclaimed, "!!!" "They're even using tactics now?"
