Chapter 160 The Box's Hidden Layer?
"Boss, I'll take this one." Jinran picked up an inkstone.
The stall owner feigned a pained expression and hurriedly said, "Young lady, this won't do. This is something from the Yongzheng era; I can't give it to you for free."
Jinran rolled her eyes. "You're untrustworthy. So, how much do you want?"
The stall owner's eyes lit up, and he said, "Give me another four yuan, and I'll take it."
Jinran casually picked up a paperweight from the stall and said, "I'll give you five yuan for these things, just consider it as getting me a repeat customer."
The stall owner grumbled, unwillingly saying, "This is just a makeshift stall, why would I need repeat customers? Fine, fine, take it!"
Jinran, feeling very satisfied with what she had learned, planned to go back and ask Professor Wang for credit.
To everyone's surprise, when Jinran walked under the tree, she saw two old men playing chess, with many people watching.
Jinran also watched the excitement for a while. She knew nothing about chess, but she could glean clues from the chess players and the expressions of the onlookers.
There is only one truth: Professor Gu is a terrible chess player.
After the crowd dispersed, Professor Wang said with great enthusiasm, "Let's go back and see the treasure you received. Your teacher's wife has just made dinner, so let's go back and eat it."
Professor Gu, having just recovered from the disappointment of his failure, shamelessly said, "I want to go too."
How much of Jinran's spouse's genes did she inherit from her grandfather? That's a question.
Professor Wang took Jinran to a place that sells Xuan paper and got everything they needed.
Professor Gu couldn't help but inquire, "What's going on? Did Nini find herself a teacher?"
Jinran looked up at the sky at a 45-degree angle, extremely worried. Don't ask, the answer is that it was voluntary.
Professor Wang said proudly, "My wife has taken a liking to Nini and wants to teach her traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy. I haven't seen my wife so happy in years. So I agreed. Anyway, Nini has nothing better to do."
Jinran: "You're so high and mighty, you're so great, you're using me to do favors!"
The three of them took a taxi back to Professor Wang's other home. Professor Gu paid for the fare. Looking at the look of despair on his face, Jinran guessed that he must have used his own money, because she had seen the same look on Shen's father's face.
Grandma Wang was working in the kitchen when Jinran handed the things she was carrying to Professor Wang and went into the kitchen to help.
Grandma Wang asked with a smile, "You're back? How was it? Did you get scolded?"
Jinran smiled and replied, "It hasn't come to that yet. I reckon it'll be time to interrogate me after dinner."
Grandma Wang was amused and burst into laughter.
Jinran quickly helped with the chores, and Grandma Wang looked at Jinran with even more affection. The old woman and the young girl chatted casually, and the atmosphere was not awkward at all.
The two old men outside remained stunned for a long time.
Professor Gu asked softly, "Is there something special about this box? Your expression is off!"
Professor Wang pondered for a moment and then said, "Look inside this box. There are layers inside. Try holding it and see if the weight is wrong. You really can't notice this subtle difference unless you look closely. I don't know how Nini found it."
Professor Gu didn't find anything different when he touched it; he's a history professor, not an archaeologist.
But aside from that slight concern, the rest of the items are all ordinary things.
Professor Gu then pleaded with Jinran, "I think it's going to be tough on my granddaughter-in-law. Speak softly later. It's better to persuade and educate girls."
Professor Wang said unhappily, "I've already treated Nini as my student, and I don't know how to cherish her? Do you need to tell me?"
"Dinner's ready!" Jinran shouted loudly.
The two old men rubbed their bellies and realized they were hungry.
After waiting patiently for all the dishes to be served, Professor Wang asked Grandma Wang with a fawning smile, "Old man, may I have a drink with Old Gu? Look how delicious these dishes are!"
Grandma Wang refused succinctly: "No."
Professor Gu chimed in, adding fuel to the fire, "Old Wang, I can't drink with you. I have to take care of my health. I'm waiting for Yan Yan to marry Nini. You should listen to your sister-in-law and not worry her."
Professor Wang: "You're still a dog, aren't you!"
Jinran felt that the two of them were equally bad. "Big brother, don't laugh at second brother."
