Chapter 17 Fawning
When Jinran returned to the Shen family, Shen Yanhong had not yet returned. Jinran put down her schoolbag and began to help Grandma Shen.
"Has Nini finished watching the show?"
Jinran nodded. "The educated youth are no different from us, it's boring. We'd be better off going up the mountain to dig some wild vegetables."
Grandma Shen said with a smile, "You're still young, Nini. Don't get close to the educated youth unless it's absolutely necessary."
Jinran nodded obediently, then asked, "Where's my mother? I didn't see her just now."
“I went back to your uncle’s house. He said he wanted to get you a puppy. You’ve been talking about it for a while now. Your uncle sent someone to tell you that he’s found one.”
Jinran's eyes lit up. It was fluffy! She loved it.
So Jinran was really looking forward to her mother coming back, and looked towards the door countless times, which made Grandma Chen laugh.
Hearing a noise at the door, Jinran happily went out to see what was going on, only to find it was Shen Yanhong.
Shen Yanhong, her face flushed with shyness and spring-like joy, saw Jinran and, unlike her usual sour expression, warmly pulled Jinran aside to talk.
Jinran "............" Manually rejected the request!
"Nini, do you know how cultured those new educated youths are? And they're so friendly. They even said I could ask them any questions I had. No wonder they're city people—good looks, good manners, good education..."
Jinran: "...The sound of you using the abacus could probably be heard by my great-grandfather in the afterlife."
Shen Yanhong was taken aback for a moment, then her face darkened.
"Don't get too cocky. What's so great about you? I'm going to get into a good university someday. Just you wait and see how good my life will be! You... Hmph!"
Jinran was puzzled. Where did this come from? She had always been well-behaved. "Sister Yanhong, if you used some of your saliva to think, you wouldn't have said such a thing today. How presumptuous of you!"
Shen Yanhong entered the room.
Just then, Wang Cuifen returned and saw Jinran in the yard. She asked, "What are you standing there for? Take the puppy you wanted!"
Jinran shakily reached out her hands and took the whimpering puppy from her mother's arms. It had black fur, white paws, and wet, adorable eyes.
“Your uncle picked this one out of the blue, saying it’s the best quality and you’ll definitely like it. This dog’s father was a hunting dog, and your uncle said he was the king of dogs, able to fight wolves.”
Jinran's eyes sparkled. "So this means she's from a prestigious family? That's incredible!"
Wang Cuifen smiled when she saw the girl acting silly, and then went inside.
Jinran picked up the puppy, and the little thing sniffed around and whimpered sweetly, which melted her heart.
When I was in the orphanage, I always wanted a pet, but I was already exhausted from living, and I didn't have the extra energy to take on another fragile life.
The dean always says, "Jinran, if you like, why not get a country dog? They're easy to raise."
Jinran always shook her head and said with a smile, "Let's not delay them from going to the rich people's homes."
This wish, she never expected, would actually come true after she traveled through time. It felt so good to be cared for. Her family wasn't wealthy, and raising a dog might be a burden, but her mother still let her keep it.
That's wonderful. She loves her family and her current life. Even Shen Yanhong, who has come out of retirement, has become more adorable.
As Shen Yanhong walked towards the door, she muttered to herself, "What's wrong with me!"
Educated Youth Settlement
“Meng Zhiqing, these are the eggs and biscuits I saved up. You probably won’t have much to eat tonight, so I’m leaving these for you. Consider them my apprenticeship gift.”
After Shen Yanhong finished speaking, she playfully stuck out her tongue.
Meng Fan smiled and declined. "You young girls should take better care of yourselves. I'm very grateful that you could bring these things, but I can't accept them. However, the favor I did do for you is still honorable."
As the two were pushing and pulling, the educated youth with an oval face came out. Looking at the eggs in Shen Yanhong's hand, she asked with surprise, "Do you have a lot of these eggs? I'd like to exchange some."
Shen Yanhong hated Xu Fan for his lack of tact. This person must have been a simpleton in his past life, with some family connections, and because he couldn't stand her, he had made her suffer a lot through his words and actions.
Shen Yanhong feigned weakness and apologized cautiously: "I'm sorry, I saved this up myself. You can ask around in the village, but I don't have any more at home."
Xu Fan pouted and left unhappily.
Seeing the look of guilt on Shen Yanhong's face, Meng Fan took out the food coupons from his pocket and stuffed them into Shen Yanhong's hand, saying with a smile, "I won't take advantage of you. I appreciate your kindness, but you should also accept my good intentions. Otherwise, I really can't accept it."
In the end, Shen Yanhong had no choice but to accept it.
