Chapter 206 Anger Against Relatives
After a few days of ups and downs, the store has finally gotten back on track, and is making around a hundred dollars a day.
Jinran is also getting engaged to Gu Siyan. She has met all the relatives from their side of the family. Some of them are not very friendly, while others are very kind. Sure enough, everyone has a few awful relatives.
On the day of the engagement, Grandma Gu gave Jinran a jade bracelet. Judging from its quality, it was no ordinary piece. In front of everyone, she said to Jinran, "Grandma admits to being biased, biased towards Yan Yan. But Grandma is biased towards you now. This jade bracelet is a dowry that my mother gave me. I'm giving it to you, hoping that you and Yan Yan will be a harmonious couple, grow old together, and have many children and grandchildren."
Gu Siyan's eldest and second sisters-in-law originally wanted to say something, but when they heard Grandma Shen say that she had many children and grandchildren, their arrogance weakened. It was as if these words were poking at their backs.
At this moment, a tactless relative said, "Grandma, it's not that I'm being mean, but these two sons are not young anymore, and they still don't have a child. What's going on? Aren't they going to die without an heir? Is there something wrong with their health?"
Both of Gu's wives turned pale. Over the years, they had been to the hospital countless times, but neither of them had any health problems; they just couldn't conceive.
Seeing that everyone was about to laugh at her, Jinran smiled and said, "You're doing just fine, and my family is fine too, so don't worry about it. It makes you look like a dog chasing a mouse."
The relative's face changed, and her words became sharper, "Why do you speak so rudely, child? When I was your sister-in-law's age, I already had two children. I didn't mean any harm; I was just worried. Is that wrong?"
Jinran continued, "You already have two kids, how can you be so naive? Do the kids look like you? If they do, then it's like you've died out in another sense."
The relative retorted, "I'm doing this for your own good. To be honest, I've eaten more salt than you've eaten rice. And you still won't listen to my advice."
Jinran nodded in agreement, "Yes, that's why I said you're so bored!"
The relative's face turned dark and then pale. After thinking for a moment, he said, "Anyway, it's a fact that she can't have children. I'm just concerned."
Now that the atmosphere was set, Jinran decided not to indulge him anymore.
"Are you confusing elders' concern with condescending and naive talk? With that kind of energy, you should worry more about yourself and whether your children will be able to find a good match. If you're going to keep being so sarcastic, you should probably start researching 'second marriages'—you never know when they might come in handy. Of course, researching won't help; there are too few fools around."
The relatives were defeated.
Both Gu's eldest and second sisters-in-law looked at Jinran with gratitude, their eyes no longer filled with jealousy or resentment, but with only one belief: "You are my god!"
Grandma Gu and Gu's mother smiled. Grandma Gu said protectively, "Our Nini doesn't have any bad intentions, but what she said makes sense. You should go back and think about it carefully. As you get older, you should know what to say and what not to say."
The engagement party ended in a lively yet eerie atmosphere.
Jinran stretched and thought about going upstairs to use the restroom, but was stopped by Sister-in-law Gu and Sister-in-law Gu Er.
They thanked Jinran for helping them out today, feeling embarrassed. Jinran said nonchalantly, "It's nothing. I'm used to being a tough guy in the village. These relatives have done a lot of disgusting things under the guise of doing what's best for you. They're all people who hate you for having something and laugh at you for not having it. Why bother with them?"
However, the two sisters-in-law still looked dejected. The eldest sister-in-law sighed and said, "We don't know what's wrong with us. We've all been to doctors, including your eldest and second eldest brothers, but it's still no use. Even if our mother-in-law doesn't say anything, we still feel terrible."
Jinran actually understood, especially since Brother Gu and Brother Gu were not young anymore.
While they were talking, they both started gagging.
Jinran quickly helped them to the sofa. "Are you alright? I'll go get Mom!"
When Gu's mother arrived, she took their pulses and was immediately stunned. Her expression made Gu's sister-in-law ask anxiously, "Mom, what's wrong with my sister-in-law and me?"
"You're pregnant, you're already a month along."
Jinran was so shocked by the news that she almost peed herself.
The Gu family all knew the good news, and both Gu's eldest sister-in-law and second sister-in-law wept with joy.
Grandma Gu said with a smile and tears in her eyes, "Our Nini is so lucky. She's only just entered the family and already has three happy events. This is a great joy, but she's still in the early stages of pregnancy, so we can't announce it. Nini, you are truly blessed."
Then everyone looked at Jinran.
Jinran thought, "..........." Maybe I should go to the restroom first? A quick pee escape would be a good idea!
Sister-in-law Gu and Sister-in-law Gu looked at Jinran with intense eyes, clearly believing what Grandma Gu had said.
Jinran remained silent for a moment, then thought back to the time when she probably added seawater to the delicious food she had prepared, and the others had eaten it as well. This had unintentionally improved their health.
Okay, as long as it's good news in the end.
Gu Siyan gripped Jinran's hand tightly, as if he had done something extraordinary.
