Cheng Ping's words caused Su Liniang to fall into a brief silence as well.
Cheng Ping gave a bitter laugh: "Do you know why I fell for her alone?"
Su Liniang looked up at Cheng Ping but didn't say anything.
Cheng Ping turned to look out the window: "I was on a mission, and I was seriously injured while trying to get close to them. I was delirious with a high fever, and she was treating me. In my dazed state, I looked at her and thought she was my mother..."
“I said, Mom, don’t go, I’ll be good, I don’t want Dad anymore…”
Cheng Ping, who was running a high fever, spoke words that were half true and half false. Weren't those words also the deepest scars from his childhood?
But the woman who resembled her mother from childhood was injured by her mother, and her fate is unknown!
"You took my mother away when I was young, yet you expect me to be an obedient son."
“I saw my mother’s shadow in another woman, yet you want to kill her…”
As Cheng Ping spoke, his voice grew colder, and the hatred and chill in his tone made Su Liniang's heart pound.
She murmured, "I had no choice back then! To him, you were a burden and a disgrace... If I had brought you with me, he would never have wanted me."
Cheng Ping scoffed, "And then what? Did he want you?"
"During the days when he didn't want you, did you ever think of the son you abandoned?"
Su Liniang slumped down, unable to utter a sound as she sat in the armchair.
Why would he want me?
If he wanted her, why would she be locked up in this place without a name or status for so many years?
He even ordered his own son to guard him!
Hehehe!
...
As Cheng Ping emerged from the villa on the outskirts of Beijing, he stood at the doorway gazing at the moonlit sky: It was dark; there was a moon tonight.
But the moon in his heart was now uncertain of its fate.
Why do people who are closest to you keep hurting you like this?!
"Chief, several groups of people have been approaching and spying on us recently..." the guard at the door reported softly.
Cheng Ping nodded, his expression grave.
Just as he was about to leave, two horses suddenly galloped towards him under the moonlight.
Cheng Ping took a deep breath: I can't leave tonight.
The two men and two horses stopped at the gate of the courtyard. One of them stepped forward, took out a small scroll from his chest, and presented it with both hands.
A subordinate handed him a lamp, and Cheng Ping used the light to unroll the scroll and read it. Without much expression, he said, "Then let's go."
One of them gave up his horse, and Cheng Ping followed the other man as they galloped away.
As dawn broke, a carriage rumbled along and stopped in front of the villa on the outskirts of the capital.
The guards came out and exchanged a few words with the driver of the carriage. The guards then carried an unconscious, blood-soaked person out of the carriage and hurried inside.
Su Liniang didn't feel like dressing up today. Cheng Ping's words last night had touched her heart.
But she always felt that Cheng Ping was wrong.
What's wrong with choosing to temporarily give up on a man so that he can accept you?
What's wrong with her taking action against that woman to free him from her entanglements?
That woman's child, despite having a dark forehead and no chance of entering the court, caught his eye, and he actually gave half of the Dragon Guard to him!
On what grounds?!
It must be that woman's fault!
If it weren't for her, I wouldn't be in this predicament now!
I did nothing wrong!
That's right!
Su Liniang slumped in her chair, her expression shifting.
"Master, it's time for breakfast," the nanny urged.
"I have no appetite, I don't want to eat." Su Liniang waved her hand impatiently.
The old woman was about to try to persuade him again when a series of chaotic footsteps sounded as several guards rushed in, carrying a mangled, bloody body.
"How dare you! How could you offend your master like this?!" the nanny exclaimed, trying to step forward to stop her.
The guard shoved the old woman aside: "His Majesty's decree: If the lady makes a mistake, the son shall bear the responsibility. Cheng Ping, the head of the Inspectorate, has failed in his duty of supervision and shall be severely punished with forty strokes of the cane and dismissed from his position as head of the Inspectorate."
After saying this, the guard waved his hand.
The people carrying Cheng Ping let go on the spot, and Cheng Ping fell face down, along with the stretcher, to the ground with a thud!
Cheng Ping showed no reaction, as if he were dead.
Su Liniang shuddered, her whole body trembling.
"Granny... Ping'er, he..."
The old woman, a woman of the world, stepped forward to check his breathing, then nodded vigorously: "He's alive! He's alive..."
But the sight of the blood-soaked waist, hips, and back was truly horrifying.
"This servant will go find the medicine right away..."
Su Liniang froze. She squatted down in front of Cheng Ping and gently lifted his clothes.
Her clothes were soaked in blood, and after they dried, they stuck to the wound. She only had to lift them slightly before they started bleeding again!
Su Liniang exclaimed in surprise, sat back down, and stared wide-eyed!
"It's true! He really did it... He's so heartless..."
I thought it was just for show, but under those tattered clothes, there were actually many wounds!
Realizing that the new emperor would actually take drastic measures, Su Liniang felt a great fear rise in her heart, and her previous certainty collapsed!
While Cheng Ping remained in the capital, Qi Yunxiao also received the news in Shenjia Village, a thousand miles away.
Qi Yunxiao was stunned when he learned that the person who attacked Consort Rong and Shen Qingyu was actually Cheng Ping's mother!
"Didn't she die a long time ago?"
Chen San reported: "His Majesty said that, out of consideration for Cheng Ping, he did not kill her, but only imprisoned her in a villa in the suburbs of the capital."
Qi Yunxiao connected the dots, understood, and sneered, "I get it."
I thought he was dead, so I didn't take it seriously. Who would have thought that this dead man would actually assassinate me twice!
