Chapter Thirty-Six: Debris Flow

The two of them fell silent.

Each one was more indifferent than the last.

Shen Qingyu didn't go out. For several days in a row, she heard the sound of footsteps passing by the door in a disorderly manner before dawn.

The men in the village were drawing water from the well to plant crops.

"With so little water, can the seeds really germinate and survive?" Shen Qingyu wondered.

Uncle Shen paused and sighed, "Who knows? We have to try! If we just wait for it to rain, the daylily will be too late."

Shen Qingyu fell silent.

In agrarian societies, people depended entirely on the weather for their livelihood.

Look, they've already given it their all just to survive.

Seeing that there were too many people queuing up to fetch water at the village entrance, and that it would take half a day to fetch even a single bucket of water, Shen Qingyu was also very worried.

If the well is dry, but your own water tank always has water, what will your family think?

Paranormal events?

When they arrived in town, the dockworkers were also worried: there was too little rain, and the Hengshui River had dried up! Where could boats still sail?

Qi Han's business was affected, the dockworkers didn't make any money, and glutinous rice was hard to sell.

I wish it would rain...

Not only Shen Qingyu thought this way, but the people of Shenjia Village thought this way, and people in Hengshui Town and even the entire prefecture city area thought this way.

Perhaps sensing the people's suffering, a heavy rain finally came down in the middle of the night!

As the torrential rain began to fall, Shen Qingyu even heard someone cheering, "Oh! It's raining!"

From nightfall until the evening of the following day, the rain continued to fall heavily and showed no signs of stopping.

At first, everyone braved the rain to dig out the paddy field ridges and store water, but later they all stayed home and waited for the rain to stop.

The sticky rice business has also stopped.

The heavy rain didn't subside until the early morning of the next day.

Shen Qingyu was still half asleep when she heard a rumbling sound and the earth shook violently!

Shen Qingyu woke up with a start: What's going on?

"Oh no! Help! There's mud coming down the mountain! Widow Xiao's house is buried..." someone cried out from afar.

Landslide?!

mudslide?

Shen Qingyu leaped up and rushed out the door!

Just then, Xiao Yunqi from the next room also rushed out. The two looked at each other and then looked into Wen Che's room.

Wen Che happened to come out as well, his face grim: "What should we do?"

"You stay home and look after the three children and that..." Xiao Yunqi made the arrangements.

Wen Che nodded decisively: He is neither strong nor capable of lifting heavy objects, so guarding the rear is the best arrangement for him.

Shen Qingyu and Xiao Yunqi turned and left.

Not only was Widow Xiao's house buried, but most of the house next door, belonging to Shen Dasong, was also buried.

Shen Dasong was digging in the mud with his hands, crying out as he did so, "Wife! Little tree..."

Those who see it are heartbroken.

The village head shouted, "Everyone, don't just stand there, quickly help out!"

Xiao Yunqi rolled up his sleeves and rushed forward, joining the recruitment effort.

This mud may not look deep, but digging a person out will take more than just an hour or two.

Shen Qingyu hurriedly went to the village head: "Everyone is busy, and luckily my family has some grain, so we'll take care of the meals. Can Cuixi and I prepare the meals and bring them over? That way, everyone won't be working on an empty stomach, and we can't keep it up for long."

"Alright! Cuixi..." The village head called out loudly, summoning Liu Cuixi over so that the two of them could go back first. Then he raised his voice, "Qingyu said that she and Cuixi will cook for everyone and bring it over, so you don't need to go home to cook!"

"Great!" Upon hearing this, everyone felt much more at ease and dug with even more energy.

With so many people, cooking wasn't very convenient, so Shen Qingyu decided to make glutinous rice for everyone.

There's already soaked glutinous rice; you can just put it directly into the steamer.

Meanwhile, various ingredients were stir-fried, including minced meat and pickled cabbage. In less than half an hour, everything was ready.

"Let's go! Let's deliver it over first and have breakfast for everyone."

The fragrant and hearty sticky rice was served over, and Shen Qingyu called out, "Everyone, have something to eat first, then continue digging!"

Upon hearing this, everyone ran to a nearby puddle to wash their hands and then came over to eat glutinous rice.

A ball of glutinous rice is equivalent to a large bowl of rice, and it's also topped with pickled cabbage, minced meat, and chili oil. Everyone devoured it in no time.

The battle was over in a few minutes, and everyone threw themselves back into the mud-digging army.

Soon, the first person was found: Shen Dasong's wife.

The woman, covered in mud, had long since stopped breathing. Kind villagers brought her a basin of water and washed her face, finally making out her features. Her mouth and nose were filled with mud...

They suffocated to death!

"My wife... I just went out to pee for a moment..." Shen Dasong cried out like a madman.

Everyone felt a deep sorrow: to be separated by death so suddenly, it would be painful for anyone.

The village head stepped forward to interrupt: "Don't cry! Finding the child is the priority!"

So everyone got busy again.

Seeing that it wouldn't be finished in one go, Shen Qingyu pulled Liu Cuixi back home: they needed to prepare lunch.

For lunch, I made large pancakes, cracked eggs into mixed grain flour, added wild scallions, and then sent them over to everyone.

The two children of Shen Dasong's family have been found, covered in mud, and lined up with their mother.

Shen Dasong was completely dumbfounded. He sat silently and motionless beside his wife and children, letting the drizzle continue to fall on him.

The crowd was already digging up Widow Xiao's house.

Widow Xiao also had two sons, and she figured that by the time they were dug up, they would be dead.

But those two children are Shen family offspring, so the exhumation should still be carried out.

Since the group had little hope, they acted quickly.

"Waaah..." A faint sobbing sound could be heard.

At first, no one took it seriously, but someone with sharp ears pointed in alarm at the mud pit: "There's crying coming from inside!"

Everyone looked over and gasped in shock.
