Chapter 181 Welcome New Recruits
"What's going on?!" "Is it a new messenger?!" "Could it be the new work of the Spider-Limb..."
"Is it foreign enemies who have bound the warrior-captain?!" A green-haired warrior stared at the twisted carriage.
"No, I think it's the Warrior Captain who's locked up the enemy!" Another warrior with a square head spoke up. "This ice monster is formidable. The Warrior Captain has come back for help. Everyone, follow me and take down this giant ice worm!"
The settlement's warriors suddenly grasped the situation. Most wore animal bone armor and wooden helmets, their weapons eclectic: bone spears, magical chainswords, and elemental slingshots. This well-trained, ragtag group was about to charge, but several sour berries flew from the crowd, each one piercing their mouths, widened by the shouting.
"Oh, it's so sour." "It's so sour!" "High Priest, what are you doing..."
"Hey, you idiots, eat some fruit." Silar tossed the fruit over, his big eyes flashing with two points... or rather, two gleams of light. "It's okay that you don't recognize the newcomers, but how come you can't even recognize your old friends?"
A trembling hand reached out from under the fallen ice sled, and the frog-faced researcher poked his head out: "Stop fighting, they're friendly forces..."
"Why is it the research institute?" The square-headed soldier was surprised. "Something happened in the forest. I thought you guys couldn't come."
"That's not right." The green-haired warrior muttered, "The forest has become a dead end. How did they get here?"
The soldiers' attention focused on the warrior leader. Qingxia, who was munching away on a basket of fruit, smiled and said, "We've killed Waklo!"
In the silence, the auditory hallucinations of the soldiers' eyeballs crackling and rolling on the ground were particularly glaring.
"No way?!!!"
Chu Hengkong pulled out Waklo's paintbrush from his sleeve as proof and said casually, "Luo Hun is also dead."
Some excited soldiers fainted on the spot.
"This is the best news yet." High Priest Silar raised his staff. "Hurry and take the new warriors to rest, and then set up the venue! We must celebrate now!"
The warriors pounded their chests with fists. A small group dragged the researchers from under the ice cart, while even more evacuated the training grounds, spreading this great news to every corner of the settlement. Before long, the entire settlement became a pot of boiling water, each one a vibrant, dancing vapor within, eager to see what the warrior who had defeated the twins looked like.
"No need..." Chu Hengkong didn't think he was the main force in the battle, and he tried to refuse. But Qingxia grabbed his arm and said to the old man, "Grandpa, call me when you are ready~"
"Okay, then you take the new warriors to familiarize themselves with the settlement..." Silar turned around and looked at him, angrily using his cane to station, "Why did you only bring one? You kid!"
Qingxia had already slipped into the crowd with Chu Hengkong, and disappeared. Ji Huaisu was busy packing up the carriage when he turned around and saw something: "No, where is he?!"
"Sister Huaisu, someone was robbed." Qingye munched on the fruit, "You didn't make it."
"You're still eating my fuck! Stop eating and follow me!"
Qingye was wolfing down his food when he nearly choked on a fruit core as he ran. "Ahem...Sister Huaisu, why are you so anxious? Mr. Chu is such a calm person..."
Ji Huaisu recalled the process of someone being forcibly kissed, and thought of the inexplicably frequent interactions between him and the female monster and Qingxia's "staring" eyes, and became more and more convinced of the correctness of his sense of crisis.
"So, Xiaoye, you don't understand. That is a real threat!"
"I feel inexplicably angry. Were you underestimating me just now?" Qing Ye said.
Ji Huaisu grinned: "How could that be? Our sisterhood is stronger than gold~ Now hurry up and follow me!"
"Sisterhood of Good Tools!"
The newcomers hadn't been there long before they left in a noisy, chaotic hustle and bustle. Silar looked up at Chongming and said with a smile, "Captain Chongming, these new team members are very energetic."
Chongming shrugged and said indifferently, "The most youthful class!"
·
Qingxia pulled Chu Hengkong around left and right, and after a few steps they were away from the training ground where the soldiers gathered and arrived at a residential area with tall houses.
The settlement's architecture is uniform, consisting mostly of earthen houses constructed from plants and animal bones. Each house is narrow and tall, a result of the unusually uneven terrain, where the ground rises and falls in layers, resembling irregular steps. Since each "step" is relatively small, the residents had to build their houses narrower. Sometimes, the top floor of a house on the lower ground barely reaches the threshold of a house on the higher ground.
Qingxia jumped back and forth like a deer, moving nimbly between the stairs. Seeing her, the children in the settlement excitedly greeted her, "Warrior Commander!" "You're back!" "Please have some fruit!" "Please have some dried meat."
"Okay~"
Qingxia responded lazily, taking the various fruit snacks and tossing them into her mouth. Chu Hengkong tried hard to resist the urge to speak, thinking that this scene was like feeding a large animal.
She walked so fast that the children had to run as fast as they could to keep up. Qingxia didn't slow down because of this, and the children put their food on their heads to run faster.
A little boy wearing glasses ran the fastest, barely catching up to Qingxia. He tossed up a piece of ham and said, "Soldier Commander! Now that you're back, what happened to our enemies?"
"Dead~" Qingxia ate the ham in one bite.
"Great!" the children shouted excitedly, "Didn't he die miserably?!"
“It’s so miserable.”
"Is he suffering?" another little girl asked anxiously. "Is he regretting it?"
"Well, I think he was in great pain before he died."
"Great!" "Good death!" "As expected of our knight." "Lord Qingxia is amazing!"
The children dispersed, contented and shouting. Chu Hengkong looked strange. These kids were shouting about death and killing so naturally, just like ordinary children discussing games. Even orphans in a war zone wouldn't do that.
He knocked on Qingxia's horse: "The children are full of martial virtues..."
Before Qingxia could reply, the little girl who had asked the question earlier kicked him angrily: "Stop it, outsider! How dare you be so disrespectful to a knight!"
Chu Hengkong was stunned, but he didn't argue, nor did he let her kick him.
"You call her a knight?"
"What? You don't even know this?!" The little girl was surprised. "Master Qingxia is the only 'Knight of Discipline' left in the Despair Wilderness!"
“?” “?!”
Chu Hengkong was stunned. Not far behind, Ji Huaisu, who had just caught up with him, froze in place, as if struck by lightning. She pulled aside a middle-aged soldier who was maintaining law and order and pointed at Qingxia, glaring, "She, a knight? She?!"
The warrior nodded repeatedly, fully understanding. "I understand your shock. After all, the knights have been gone for countless centuries... But this is absolutely true. Lady Qingxia is the last remaining knight in this world. Her strength and bravery are exactly the same as the holy image passed down through generations in the settlement!"
The warrior proudly raised his spear, pointing behind the bone houses at a "wooden wall" woven from a tangle of various plants. Branches of varying shades twisted and woven, "embroidering" a variety of heretical forms on the wall.
A centaur knight, wielding a heavy lance, stood before the heretic army, a figure of extraordinary bravery. Behind him stood a winged figure, holding a long sword, seemingly a priest assisting the knights.
The painting deliberately embellishes the knight's helmet with red flowers, and his long hair looks blood red... It is exactly the same as Qingxia in battle!
"Oh, Master Qingxia..." The warrior clasped his hands in reverence, "No one knows how noble you are..."
"No, no, no, that's not right! That's not right!" Ji Huaisu went crazy. "She is the last knight, so what am I?"
Qingye ate a few more pieces of dried meat, his cheeks looking round from stuffing so much food on them. "I'm afraid it's the Elemental Servant who's in charge of warming the Knight's daughter's bed."
"There's obviously something wrong here!!"
Chu Hengkong scratched his ears, trying to ignore the idiotic conversation coming from behind him. The little girl hadn't left yet. She was also wearing bone armor and a wooden helmet, like a small-sized settlement warrior.
Her kick missed the target and she couldn't catch up with the other two. She hurried to the front and asked Qingxia, "Sir Knight... why did you let people from outside come over..."
Qingxia looked down at her: "Vita, don't you like newcomers?"
"How could I possibly like it!" Vita said excitedly, "Outsiders are all murderers! Last time was..."
"Yeah, yeah, I understand." Qing Xia shook his head, "It's true that you will be unhappy. But this is a decision made by everyone. You are not strong enough to express your opinion on everyone's decision yet."
Vita fell silent, the kind of silence that comes from someone who knows they're in the wrong. Qingxia picked up the aggrieved little girl and said with a smile, "Wait until you become a 'warrior' before you express your opinion."
She threw Vita up, and the little girl landed on a large mushroom about ten meters away, bouncing back and forth on the umbrella cover like a trampoline. She shouted angrily: "I will! The next trial will be my turn, and I will definitely succeed!"
"Come on, come on~"
Qingxia walked away leisurely. Chu Hengkong frowned and said, "Don't do this to a child."
"There's no distinction between adults and children here," Qingxia said. "Besides, Vita is much more capable than the kids outside."
Her words were true. Vita's physique was far stronger than any adult outside. That kick she'd delivered was a foreign martial art, not pure brute force. In Huilong City, someone like her would be a full-fledged member of the Resurrection Corps, but in the settlement, she was just a child.
"I observed a lot of people when I was in Jinye City. I didn't expect the kids out there to be so weak! A kid like this could survive. It turns out the wilderness is a terrible place~" Qingxia tilted her head. "Were you like that when you were a kid?"
"I was much stronger than Vita at my age." Chu Hengkong didn't want to talk more. "What do you want to do by bringing me out?"
"I have something I want to ask you for help with." Qingxia lowered her head and whispered, "Do you see that red-roofed house?"
Qingxia's ears twitched, and following her pointed ears, she could see a red-roofed house. The house was located on the highest "staircase" in the settlement, far from the center of the settlement. It looked more like a lonely watchtower than a residential house.
Near the house, he saw a building that didn't fit in with the overall style of the settlement. But before he could delve deeper, Qingxia was already giving him instructions.
"That's my home." Qingxia blew into his ear, "Come over alone at night. Please~"
"Hey, you—"
Chu Hengkong covered his ears and was about to argue when Qingxia looked up. She turned around with a smile, looked at Ji Huaisu who was chasing after her, and spoke first.
"Okay~ the preparations are almost done, let's have the party!"
