As the night deepened, the entire Huagou Village fell into a deep sleep, with only the occasional barking of a dog heard in the distance.
"Gurgle."
Jiang Henian covered his hungry stomach and turned over in discomfort.
The result of making such a fuss was that she had no food to eat. Although she couldn't get used to the tasteless porridge and pickled vegetables, there was no chance for her to steal food from the space.
She quietly raised her head and glanced at Jiang Yanqiu who was sleeping on the other side, then secretly took out a large piece of chocolate from the space, quickly stuffed it into her mouth, and chewed silently.
Ah... No, I'm so hungry.
The more sweet food you eat, the emptier your stomach feels.
Jiang Henian tossed and turned uncomfortably on the cold kang. She didn't know why, but she felt the kang was extremely hard and she couldn't lie comfortably no matter how she lay on it.
"Do you have worms? You're moving around so much and making so much noise!"
Jiang Yanqiu closed her eyes and slapped the bed in annoyance, scaring Jiang Henian so much that he almost choked to death on the whole piece of chocolate.
She lay motionless with her back to him, listening for a long time before she dared to continue chewing.
After enduring for a while, she lifted the thin quilt and tiptoed out of the room.
No! If she didn't find a place to eat a hot lunch, she would be the first person to starve to death on the first day of her time travel.
The room was dark, without a trace of light.
Jiang Henian tiptoed along the wall and walked into the main room, heading towards the door curtain through which the moonlight shone.
As soon as I opened it, a pale old woman's face came straight towards me!
“Oh my god—!!”
Jiang Henian was so frightened that he screamed.
His mouth was covered harshly, he was dragged out roughly and thrown to the ground.
"You little bitch! What are you yelling for?!"
"Chop all this wood and wash all the clothes, or I'll show you how I'll deal with you tomorrow!"
Jiang Henian looked up at Wang Chunfang, who was standing in front of him with her hands on her hips, still in shock.
This is when the she-devil reveals her true form again.
Taking advantage of the original owner's soft nature and her silence, the evil stepmother would always take advantage of the night when no one was around to torture and abuse the original owner to vent her anger.
Wang Chunfang lowered her voice and pointed at her disobedient stepdaughter the entire day, saying, "What are you looking at? Why don't you get started and wait for me to serve you? You can't go to bed until I finish!"
Hungry, frightened, and with his butt hurting from the fall, Jiang Henian was so angry that he was about to soar to the sky.
Except for the few times when she was chased for debt, she had never suffered such humiliation!
Jiang Henian grabbed the thick firewood nearby, sat on the ground, closed his eyes, and waved it forward randomly, shouting, "Ghost! The she-devil is taking my life! Help!"
The firewood in his hand hit Wang Chunfang's calf accurately, making a loud popping sound and the other party screaming.
The noise woke up everyone in the house, and then the crying of a baby was heard from the east room.
"What are you yelling about in the middle of the night?"
Jiang Chengmin ran out in a hurry, holding a kerosene lamp in his hand, barely lighting up the yard.
Jiang Yanqiu, Jiang Jirong, and two little kids also came out rubbing their eyes.
Jiang Henian took the opportunity to slap Wang Chunfang twice more before throwing away the firewood and bursting into tears: "Dad! I saw a ghost! A female demon dragged me out and wants to kill me!"
Her eyes were still closed, and she looked completely terrified.
Jiang Xiaomiao and Jiang Xiaobao were young and half asleep. They were frightened by this scene and their mouths pouted, and they started crying at the top of their lungs.
"Wow, there's a ghost! There really is a ghost!"
"Mom! The ghost is here to catch people! It's going to eat children, wuwuwu!"
For a while, the whole Jiang family was filled with cries, just like when their father had died.
Wang Chunfang's face turned blue, and he froze. His calves were throbbing with pain from the beating, but he couldn't say anything. "This—"
"Shut up! You've woken up the whole village!" Jiang Chengmin's face turned pale. "Where did this ghost come from? Go back to your rooms and sleep!"
He glared at Wang Chunfang, turned away and went back to his room. The others also went back in disappointment.
Wang Chunfang picked up her crying twin children, glared at Jiang Henian fiercely, and limped back to the house.
Jiang Henian sat on the ground in a daze, waiting for the darkness and silence to return to his surroundings before he relaxed all his strength. He was really tired and hungry.
It wasn't entirely an act just now. She was a little night-blind and her vision was not very good in the dark. At the beginning, she was really scared by Wang Chunfang's close-range attack. The lethality was comparable to any horror movie she had seen.
She stood up trembling, opened the gate quietly and went out.
Huagou Village only had electricity at the beginning of the year, and it only lasts for two hours at night. There are power outages every now and then, not to mention street lights.
The night was deep and the surroundings were pitch black under the shade of the houses. Only the spacious dirt road in the distance was illuminated by the moonlight.
Jiang Henian stood at the door, his ears filled with the sound of insects, and for a moment he didn't know where to go.
Coming to this strange era alone, I am surrounded by monsters and demons.
She suddenly lowered her head and smiled self-deprecatingly.
It seems that there is no difference in modern times. She is no longer Jiang Henian who was loved by her parents. She is alone wherever she goes.
In the early autumn in the countryside, the nights are already chilly.
Jiang Henian rubbed his arms, took out a flashlight from the space, turned silently and walked towards the moonlit path.
…
I don’t know how long I walked with my head down, but the flashlight in my hand suddenly flickered, as if it was low on battery.
I bought this at the supermarket and didn't have time to charge it.
Jiang Henian was a little anxious and quickened his pace. Finally, he arrived at the old thatched house at the foot of the mountain before the flashlight went out.
The dim light of a candle shone through the crack in the door.
Jiang Henian hid by the door and observed for a while. After making sure that there was no one there, he tiptoed to open the door and slipped in.
After closing the broken wooden door again, she didn't look at the kang bed, but walked straight to the farthest corner and sat down with her back to the floor.
