Chapter 37: Falling into a Fat Pit and Rescuing People

He Jinshan stood up and looked down at Jiang Henian who was staring at him in silence.

It was so tiny that even when it was squatting it was not even as tall as the wheat stalks. I almost didn't see it.

"Don't you recognize me?"

Jiang Henian came back to his senses from his messy fantasy and coughed guiltily.

"Xiao, cough He Jinshan," she covered her mouth, looked around cautiously, then raised her head and asked in a low voice, "Why are you here?"

He Jinshan glanced around casually.

The distant mountain slopes offer a wide view, and all you see is either yellow or green, with busy figures working busily everywhere.

These people, regardless of gender, age or status, all grew up in the village and are all good at work. They carry baskets on their backs and move quickly back and forth in the cornfields, bend down and stand up in the wheat fields, and harvest far away in the blink of an eye.

In contrast, the wheat field facing the mountain is quiet. Only a few square meters of space have been cleared out, which looks extremely cramped and pitiful, and the progress is worrying.

He Jinshan understood, crossed his arms and asked with a smile: "What are you doing?"

Jiang Henian took the sickle and answered obediently, "I'm harvesting wheat."

The man raised his lips and imitated her tone: "I am also harvesting wheat."

Jiang Henian's eyes widened. "Your leg is still injured! Are you coming to work already?"

As she spoke, she reached out and tugged at He Jinshan's trouser leg, deliberately lowering her voice furtively: "Squat down, sit down."

He Jinshan bent his knees and squatted as he was told, with a questioning look in his eyes.

Even when he was squatting, he was still a head taller than the wheat ears. Jiang Henian straightened up and looked around worriedly, "You're too tall. Someone might see you."

He Jinshan took the sickle from her hand, threw it casually, and the blade spun and fell steadily back into his palm.

"I can't see people?"

Jiang Henian glanced at him with a look that said, "You don't understand this, do you?" and explained seriously in a low voice:

"Outside, you are my ex-brother-in-law. We have never met and are not very familiar with each other. You haven't been back to the village for ten years and you don't know that some people are very gossipy and will talk nonsense."

The man's eyes scanned her face before he asked teasingly with a teasing smile, "What nonsense are you talking about?"

During the time Jiang Henian was working in the fields, he heard a lot of gossip from the women in the village, but he couldn't open his mouth to learn from them. He could only speak vaguely, "It's just not good words."

He Jinshan nodded in understanding, "Oh... so we are familiar with each other here?"

Jiang Henian choked, and some very "familiar and intimate" images flashed through his mind.

She quickly turned her eyes away, her fingers tugging at a handful of wheat stubble on the ground. "Well, we've known each other for about ten days now, haven't we? I even treated your leg and we even ate bread together..."

She pursed her lips and spoke in a low voice. As she spoke, her eyes moved back, and her eyes clearly condemned him for "abandoning her after having sex with her."

We’ve gone through this and that, how can it not be considered familiar?

Of course, she didn't have the courage to say out loud the most powerful evidence of "familiarity", as she was not in the right in that matter.

He Jinshan's eyes fell directly on Jiang Henian's face, with a smile on his face, as if a cat teaser was very pleased by the kitten's reaction.

Jiang Henian felt so uncomfortable and itchy all over. He reached out to scratch his neck, but someone grabbed his hand.

"Don't move."

He Jinshan's smile faded slightly. He raised his hand to hold her chin, then moved her sideways to expose her neck.

On the thin white neck, three dark red scratches were very glaring. A thin scab that had just formed was scratched open at some point, and blood was oozing out.

"Did you scratch yourself again while sleeping last night?"

Jiang Henian then realized that the wound from yesterday's fight was itchy.

He Jinshan took out a small red bottle the size of a thumb from his pocket, unscrewed the lid with one hand, and then took out a cotton ball from somewhere, dipped it in the red potion and rubbed it on her neck.

Finally, the little red bottle and another object were stuffed into her hands.

"You fell down, go back and rub it with some medicinal wine."

Jiang Henian looked at the red medicine and medicinal oil in his hands and was a little surprised.

The packaging was old, like a common medicine of that era. He had nothing there, so how did he get it?

Was it... specially found for me?

"Uncle... did you come here specially to bring me medicine?"

He Jinshan hooked his hand and grabbed Jiang Henian's braid, pulling it gently, "That's why I made you run so fast this morning."

It’s true... He brought medicine specially for me.

Jiang Henian's eyes were warm.

For the first time, she felt fortunate that He Jinshan came with her to this strange era.

Although it was selfish to think this way, it was really great. Even if she didn't need these medicines, someone was thinking about her and caring about her.

Jiang Henian clutched the medicine in his hand and said with a touching look on his face: "Uncle, I——"

Before he could finish his words, he heard a series of surprised calls from somewhere.

"Oh my god!!! Hurry up and get some help!!! Come help!!!"

"Someone come quickly! Oh my God! It's so heavy!"

The people working nearby immediately ran in a certain direction.

Jiang Henian stood up and looked around, listening to the increasingly lively discussions, his gossip spirit burning.

Without saying a word, he pulled He Jinshan and quietly followed behind to join in the fun.

After passing a cornfield, there is a small bamboo forest. Further back is the largest fertilizer pit in Huagou Village, which is crowded with people.

There is no chemical fertilizer in the countryside, and the fertilizer used for farming depends entirely on the accumulation of fertilizer by the entire village.

All the pig and cow manure, chicken coops, and toilets in the entire production team had to be picked up and piled up in the manure pit, and then some wild grass, fallen leaves, and straw were thrown in to make compost into manure.

Without manure, crops will not grow.

Even children of a few years old know to pick up cow dung cakes when they see them and throw them into the fertilizer pit.

Ma Guihong stood at the edge of the manure pit, stretched out the shoulder pole she was using to carry the manure bucket, and hooked it around an obese man.
